Who actually flies domestically now

Australia's domestic field is small, and it is worth checking who is genuinely selling seats before you plan a route around a name. Qantas and its low-cost subsidiary Jetstar sit in one group; Virgin Australia is the main competitor; Rex serves regional towns.

Rex's own site describes it as "Australia's largest independent regional airline operating a fleet of Saab 340 aircraft to 51 destinations throughout all states in Australia", and notes that Regional Express Holdings is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Air T, Inc. Treat Rex as a regional specialist rather than a capital-city price fighter unless its schedules page shows otherwise for your route.

New low-cost entrants have appeared and disappeared in this market before. If you see an unfamiliar carrier name on a comparison site, open that airline's own booking page and confirm it is selling and operating your date before you build a trip around it.

The fare that excludes your bag

The headline domestic fare in Australia often buys the seat and nothing else, and the airlines differ sharply on where that line falls. This table compares what the cheapest standard Economy fare includes on each carrier.

Airline Cheapest fare includes Carry-on
Qantas 1 x 23kg checked bag 14kg total, 3 items
Virgin Australia (Lite) No checked baggage 8kg main bag | 1 personal item
Jetstar (Starter) No checked baggage 7kg across 2 items
Rex (Promo, Saver) 15kg checked 7kg

Qantas states a standard domestic Economy allowance of 1 piece up to 23kg on its checked baggage page, rising for Frequent Flyer tiers. Virgin's domestic fares page shows checked baggage as "Available for purchase" on Lite and included as 1 x 23kg on Choice and Flex.

Jetstar's baggage page states that Starter fares include only a 7kg carry-on allowance and that up to 40kg of checked baggage can be purchased, with prices varying by route. That purchase is where a Jetstar fare stops being the cheapest.

Carry-on limits that get enforced

Carry-on weight is the limit most travellers underestimate, and the gap between carriers is large. Jetstar's carry-on rules allow two items sharing 7kg total, with no single bag over 10kg. Rex allows 7kg. Virgin's carry-on page allows a main bag of L56 x W36 x H23cm plus a personal item of L45 x W33 x H20cm, and states no individual item may exceed 8kg.

Qantas is the outlier in the other direction: its carry-on page allows three pieces — an overhead bag, an underseat bag and a personal item — up to 14kg combined, with no single item over 10kg.

A 7kg cabin allowance is roughly a small case and a laptop. If your bag is weighed at the gate and fails, you check it there at airport rates, which are higher than pre-purchase rates on every carrier here.

Comparing a total fare properly

A domestic fare comparison only works if you price the same trip on each airline. Build the total the same way every time before you decide.

  1. Start with the base fare for your date and time.
  2. Add the checked bag you actually need, priced at the pre-purchase rate on that airline's booking page.
  3. Add seat selection if you need a specific seat — Virgin includes it on Choice and Flex but sells it on Lite.
  4. Add the change fee you would pay if your plans slip, since that is the fare's real risk price.
  5. Add the cost of getting to and from the terminal at both ends, including the T1 transfer if you are self-connecting.

On Virgin, changes more than 14 days before departure cost "$109 fee plus fare difference" on Lite and Choice and no fee on Flex, and a Lite fare cancelled outright is a loss of fare. Virgin's own page states that for bookings made on or after 15 September 2026 those change fees rise from $109 to $120, so check which side of that date your booking falls on.

Connecting through Sydney terminals

Sydney Airport's domestic terminals, T2 and T3, sit on the opposite side of the runways from T1 international, and moving between them is a real journey rather than a walk. This table compares the transfer options Sydney Airport publishes.

Option Time Cost
Terminal transfer bus 10 minutes Free
Airport Link train 2 minutes $8.50 peak, $7.30 off-peak
Route 420 public bus Varies About $1.60–$3.20

Sydney Airport's terminal transfer page puts the complimentary shuttle at every 15 minutes between 05:30 and 22:30, departing the arrivals level outside Arrival Hall B at T1. The train runs frequently between 5am and midnight and accepts Opal, contactless cards and devices.

Qantas lounges are located at T3 and Virgin Australia and Rex lounges at T2, which is a reliable clue to where each airline operates, but confirm your terminal on your booking before you travel.

A through-checked connection and two separate bookings behave completely differently when something goes wrong. On a single ticket, the airline that delays you is responsible for getting you onto the next flight, and your bag is usually checked through to the final destination.

On two separate tickets you are the connection. If the first flight lands late, the second airline has sold you a seat on a flight you simply missed, and the fare rules of that second ticket decide what you get — which, on a Virgin Lite or Jetstar Starter fare, may be nothing.

Self-connecting through Sydney on separate tickets is defensible if you build a genuine buffer — several hours, not one — and accept that you carry the risk. It is the wrong choice on the last flight of the day, when there is no later service to fall back on.

When your flight is cancelled

Australia has no European-style scheme of fixed cash compensation for a cancelled or delayed domestic flight. The ACCC's travel delays and cancellations guidance rests on the Australian Consumer Law guarantee that services will be provided within a reasonable time, giving you "a replacement travel service or refund if a travel service is delayed or cancelled, depending on the circumstances".

The ACCC also notes that where a delay is not resolved within a reasonable time, providers must offer consumers their choice of a replacement service or a refund, and that any rights under an airline's own compensation policy sit on top of the consumer guarantees rather than replacing them.

Complain to the airline first. If that fails, the Airline Customer Advocate offers a free service for unresolved complaints about Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia. The government's Aviation Industry Ombuds Scheme is expected to begin operations in 2026 and cannot investigate complaints until it does; an interim ombudsperson is currently doing preparatory work only.

Distances and regional routes

Australian domestic sectors are long. Sydney to Perth crosses the continent and a time zone gap, and it is a multi-hour flight closer in length to a short international sector than to Sydney–Melbourne — check the scheduled duration on the airline's timetable before assuming a same-day onward connection works.

On a sector that long, the difference between a Jetstar Starter fare and a Qantas Economy fare is not only the bag. It is seat pitch, meal inclusion and how quickly you are rebooked if the aircraft goes technical, and those matter more at five hours than at one.

Regional routes tighten the baggage question further. Rex's baggage allowance page sets 15kg checked on Community, Promo and Saver fares and 23kg on Flex, with excess charged at $5.50 per kilogram including GST, or $20 for a pre-purchased 5kg bundle. Oversize pieces beyond 140cm total dimensions attract $16.50 per piece, and nothing over 32kg is accepted at the airport.

Before you complete the booking

Open the airline's own booking page and price the exact bag you are carrying, on the exact date, before you commit. Fees and inclusions on this page were read on the carriers' sites on 7 September 2026 and change without much notice.

Weigh your cabin bag at home if you are flying Jetstar or Rex, where 7kg is the ceiling. Confirm whether your fare permits a change, and at what cost, if any part of your trip is uncertain. And if an international arrival feeds your domestic flight on a separate ticket, decide honestly whether your buffer at Sydney survives a one-hour delay.
