Where is Medellín's airport, and which one are you using?
José María Córdova is not in Medellín. It is in Rionegro, and the airport bus reaches the city through the Túnel de Oriente. Medellín also has a second airport, Olaya Herrera, inside the city. The city describes Olaya Herrera as serving local, regional and national flights. It is run by a municipal public body and operated under concession by Airplan.
If your ticket shows Olaya Herrera, most of this guide does not apply: you land inside the city. If it says MDE, keep reading.
Which option suits your arrival?
| Option | Cost per person | Hours | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combuses Aeropuerto to Exposiciones | COP 20,000 | 24 hours | Solo or couple, light bags, staying near Line A |
| Combuses + metro onward | COP 20,000 + COP 4,400 | Metro hours apply | Staying elsewhere on the metro network |
| Terminal buses (Rápido Medellín, Flota Rionegro, Chachafruto) | COP 10,500–15,000 (Medellín to airport) | Roughly 04:00–21:30 | Staying near the North or South bus terminals |
| Taxi | COP 132,000 per car (Medellín's fixed fare to the airport) | 24 hours | Three or four people, heavy luggage, late at night |
The bus fare comes from the Metro de Medellín fare page, which lists "Combuses Tarifa plena: 20000". The same page lists the bearer (occasional) metro fare at COP 4,400 and a bearer Cívica card or replacement at COP 12,100.
How do I take the airport bus to Medellín?
According to Metro de Medellín, the Combuses Aeropuerto route runs 24 hours with 26 buses. It goes non-stop through the Túnel de Oriente between the airport and the north side of Exposiciones station, and you pay with a Cívica card or a QR code from the Cívica app. At the 2023 launch, city hall quoted COP 14,000. The Metro's current fare table shows COP 20,000, so budget for that.
We could not confirm from an official page where to buy or top up a Cívica card inside the arrivals hall. If you land without a card or the Cívica app set up, you may not be able to pay for the bus, so have the taxi as your fallback. Some travellers report other airport buses stopping near San Diego or the Hotel Nutibara in the centre. We found no official timetable or fare for those stops, so this guide does not rely on them.
What do the terminal buses cost?
Terminales Medellín sells tickets to the airport at both city bus terminals. It lists these companies and fares from Medellín:
| Company | Route | Fare | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rápido Medellín | Aeropuerto/Llanogrande | COP 15,000 | 04:00–21:30, every half hour |
| Flota Rionegro | Aeropuerto | COP 10,500 | 05:00–19:00 (airport service) |
| Chachafruto | Rionegro/Aeropuerto | COP 10,500–11,500 | 04:30–21:30 (North), 04:30–20:00 (South) |
These are fares and hours towards the airport. The page does not give a timetable for the return from the airport, so treat these buses as your plan for the trip back to your flight rather than for arrival.
How much is a taxi between the airport and Medellín?
The Alcaldía de Medellín set 2026 taxi fares from 2 February 2026. A trip to José María Córdova is a fixed fare of COP 132,000 in a basic taxi, COP 134,100 in an electric taxi and COP 143,100 in a luxury taxi. For trips inside the city, the notice tells passengers to insist on the meter. In a basic taxi, flag fall is COP 5,900, the minimum fare is COP 8,300, and each 82 m adds COP 200.
Worked examples: one traveller and a group of four
One traveller, 16:00, one backpack, staying near a Line A station. Combuses to Exposiciones costs COP 20,000. The metro onward costs COP 4,400, plus COP 12,100 if you need a bearer Cívica card. That comes to COP 36,500 the first time and COP 24,400 on later trips. A taxi at about COP 132,000 costs more than five times as much. Take the bus, as long as your Cívica card or app is ready before you land.
Four adults, 23:00, four large suitcases, staying in El Poblado. By bus it is 4 × COP 20,000 = COP 80,000, plus 4 × COP 4,400 for the metro (COP 17,600), plus cards: at least COP 97,600. You would also be moving four suitcases through a station under construction late at night. One taxi at around COP 132,000 costs about COP 33,000 each and goes to your door. Take the taxi, or two if the luggage will not fit in one.
Before you leave the arrivals hall
Check the airport on your ticket, your Cívica balance and the time. Migración Colombia lists José María Córdova among the airports with Biomig. It says foreign adults can use Biomig only on exit. Plan for the manual immigration queue on arrival.
For immigration steps before you fly, see the Colombia entry and Check-MIG guide. For pesos and cards, see paying in Colombia. If you are connecting through the capital, see El Dorado airport to Bogotá.
