Does your rental car already have one?

The e-matrica is checked by plate, using fixed cameras, mobile units and roadside patrols. There is nothing on the windscreen. Whether you need to buy one depends on where the car is registered and what the rental contract includes.

Your car Motorway use What to check
Avis, rented in Hungary Included in the vehicle licence fee (VLF) The VLF line on the contract
Hertz, Hungarian-registered E-vignette already on the car Ask the desk to confirm the validity dates
Other companies in Hungary Not confirmed in the terms reviewed Ask whether a national e-matrica is registered
Rented in Austria, Slovakia or another country No Hungarian vignette unless the company confirms one Buy before the first toll section

Avis Hungary charges a compulsory vehicle licence fee that includes free use of Hungarian motorways: EUR 14.48 to EUR 18.29 per day depending on car group, for at most 15 days in each 30. Hertz Hungary says all its Hungarian-registered cars have e-vignettes and that cars registered elsewhere need their own.

Check the vehicle category first

The price depends on the category written in the car's registration certificate, not on how many people travel. A normal rental car and a large one differ here.

Category What it covers Typical rental
D1 Cars up to 3.5 t with at most 7 seats including the driver (M1 or M1G on the papers) Hatchbacks, saloons, estates, 7-seat SUVs
D2 Any vehicle marked N1 or N1G, or with 8 or more seats Vans, 8- and 9-seat minibuses
U Trailer towed by a D2 vehicle Trailers behind a van

The operator's FAQ is explicit that a 9-seat vehicle needs D2 even if only seven people ride in it. Buying D1 for a D2 vehicle triggers a differential surcharge.

How much is the Hungarian e-matrica in 2026?

These prices, including VAT, are from the operator's rates page and its 2026 price notice, valid from 1 January 2026.

Vignette D1 car D2 van or minibus Validity
National daily HUF 5,550 HUF 7,890 0:00 to 24:00 on one calendar day
National weekly (10-day) HUF 6,900 HUF 10,040 Start day plus 9 more, 10 calendar days in all
National monthly HUF 11,170 HUF 15,820 To the same date in the next month
National annual HUF 61,760 HUF 87,650 Calendar year to 31 January of the next year
County annual (per county) HUF 7,190 HUF 14,370 Toll roads in that county only, to 31 January of the next year

The validity rules come from National Mobile Payment, an authorised reseller. If you buy a vignette that starts on the same day, it is valid from the minute of purchase, never retroactively.

Worked example: a week based in Budapest

Plan Daily vignettes 10-day vignette Better choice
One motorway day, such as Lake Balaton and back on the same day HUF 5,550 HUF 6,900 Daily
Two motorway days in the week HUF 11,100 HUF 6,900 10-day
A 20-day stay using only the M0 ring Not practical Two needed, HUF 13,800 Pest county annual, HUF 7,190 (national monthly: HUF 11,170)

The county vignette in the last row works because, as the FAQ explains, motorways outside Budapest's built-up area but inside its boundary, including sections of the M0, M3, M5 and M6, are covered by the Pest county vignette. There is no separate vignette for Budapest itself. A county vignette stops being valid at the first junction in the next county, so for trips further out, a national vignette is simpler.

Toll-free sections near Budapest

The list of free sections is short. For Budapest visitors, the one that matters is the M4 between Vecsés and Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, so driving a rental car from the airport into the city does not need an e-matrica on that stretch. The same page lists the M4 between Törökszentmiklós and Kisújszállás, the M8, the M80 and a few bypasses.

Everything else marked M plus a number is generally tolled. According to the FAQ, the whole M0 ring has been tolled since 1 January 2024, and from 1 January 2026 the M6 is tolled all the way to the southern border.

How do you buy the e-matrica for a rental car?

If you realise you are already on a toll road without a vignette, the enforcement rules give good-faith drivers 60 minutes to buy one. The same grace period applies if a mobile patrol stops you within that hour: you can buy on the spot.

What is the fine for driving without an e-matrica in Hungary?

Without a valid vignette, the operator imposes a surcharge (pótdíj) on the vehicle's owner or operator. The 2026 amounts are:

Situation Paid within 60 days Paid after 60 days
No valid vignette HUF 27,790 HUF 95,730
Wrong category, such as D1 on a D2 van HUF 15,530 HUF 49,190

For a rental car, the letter goes to the rental company as the registered operator. Hertz Hungary says fines usually arrive within three weeks of the customer leaving and charges EUR 38.10 per traffic or parking fine on top. Avis Hungary charges EUR 25.40 per case for handling traffic penalties and surcharges. The HUF 27,790 surcharge is about four times the price of a 10-day vignette, before any handling fee.
