Can you rent a car in Ireland with a foreign licence?
Citizens Information, the state information service (page edited 28 April 2026), sorts foreign licences into three groups. The rental company then adds its own conditions.
| Licence issued in | What the law allows a visitor | What Irish Car Rentals asks | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| EU or EEA country | Drive while the licence is valid | Licence held 24 months; no IDP | Bring the physical licence |
| Recognised state: UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Switzerland, South Africa, and more | Drive for up to 1 year while visiting | Licence held 24 months; no IDP for UK or Australian licences | Bring the physical licence |
| Canada: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Saskatchewan | Recognised; up to 1 year | No IDP | Bring the physical licence |
| USA, other Canadian provinces, other countries | Up to 12 months, with an IDP from your own country | No IDP for US or Canadian licences | Get an IDP before you leave |
The recognised list also includes Georgia, Gibraltar, Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Moldova and Northern Ireland.
The gap in the last row matters. Irish Car Rentals' terms (updated February 2026) say drivers with licences from the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or an EU country do not need an IDP. That is the company's rule for handing over a car. The Citizens Information page describes the legal condition for driving on a licence from outside the recognised list, and the United States is not on it. The Road Safety Authority also says an IDP may be required in some circumstances. An IDP is issued in your home country before travel, so get one if your licence is not from the EU, the EEA or a recognised state.
An IDP never replaces the licence. Irish Car Rentals refuses an IDP shown without the original licence, and it does not accept digital licences.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Ireland?
Rental companies set their own age limits. Irish Car Rentals uses these minimums:
| Car group | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| Mini, economy, compact and intermediate cars | 22 |
| Vans | 27 |
| Full-size, premium, luxury cars and standard minivans | 28 |
Drivers aged 22 to 25 pay a daily young driver surcharge, per driver. Every driver needs a full licence held for at least 24 months. The CCPC, Ireland's consumer regulator, notes that many rental companies require two years' experience, and that the total price, including extras such as an under-25 surcharge, should be clear at booking. A 26-year-old cannot drive a full-size car at this company, so match the car group to the youngest driver.
What insurance do you need to rent a car in Ireland?
By law, a rental must include third-party cover. The CCPC explains that this does not cover damage to the rental car itself, theft, or injury to its driver.
At Irish Car Rentals, the standard price includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Waiver (TW), but with an excess that varies by car group and is shown on your rental agreement. The deposit held on your card is usually that excess. You can buy cover to reduce it: Partial Cover cuts it to €300, and Premium Protection removes it, leaving a deposit of at least €50 on prepaid bookings.
| Your plan | What happens at the desk | Risk if the car is damaged |
|---|---|---|
| Accept the included CDW and TW | Excess held as deposit on a credit card | You pay up to the excess |
| Buy Partial Cover | Excess cut to €300; debit card becomes acceptable | You pay up to €300 |
| Buy Premium Protection | Excess cut to zero | Nothing up to the cover limits |
| Rely on separate excess insurance bought elsewhere | Not accepted by Irish Car Rentals; full excess held | You pay the company, then claim from your insurer |
| US or Canadian resident relying on credit card cover | Allowed only with the right letter and card | You are liable up to the full value of the car |
The CCPC confirms that when you buy excess insurance from another provider, the rental company still charges your card first and you claim the money back.
Credit card cover for US and Canadian residents
If your North American credit card includes rental damage cover, Irish Car Rentals offers CDW-exclusive rates to US and Canadian residents. The conditions are strict:
A letter requested four weeks before the trip is already too old at pickup, so ask for it about two weeks before you fly.
At the pickup desk
The CCPC's advice for collecting a car comes down to a short routine:
- Walk round the car and photograph or film any scratches, dents and marks, inside and out.
- Make sure every existing mark is on the company's damage diagram before you leave.
- Check the lights and the windscreen for chips.
- Ask how tolls are handled. Avis Ireland, for example, bills the M50 toll to your card after the rental; see the M50 barrier-free toll.
- Keep the rental agreement in the car. The RSA lists it with your licence and insurance documents as papers to carry.
Driving on Irish roads
Traffic drives on the left, and signs show speeds in km/h. The default limits, from Citizens Information:
| Road | Default limit |
|---|---|
| Motorway | 120 km/h |
| National road, including dual carriageways | 100 km/h |
| Regional road | 80 km/h |
| Local road in a rural area | 60 km/h, since 7 February 2025 |
| Built-up area | 50 km/h, with many streets moving to 30 km/h by 31 March 2027 |
The RSA's tourist page still lists the older road limits, so follow the signs. A white circle crossed by five diagonal black lines, with a "Go Mall / Slow" plate, now means 60 km/h. Variable limits apply on the M50.
Speeding brings a €160 fine and 3 penalty points, rising to €240 if paid after 28 days, according to Citizens Information on penalty points. A driver on a non-Irish licence gets a separate Irish penalty point record, and 12 points brings a ban from driving in Ireland. The Garda fixed charge rules allow 56 days in total: the standard charge in the first 28 days, 50% more in the next 28, and no payment accepted after that, when the case can go to court. A camera notice goes first to the registered owner, which for a rental car is the company; it has 28 days to nominate the driver, and a new notice is then issued to you with its own payment period. The drink-drive limit for fully licensed drivers is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, and Gardaí run random breath tests. Holding a phone while driving is illegal.
Can you drive an Irish rental car into Northern Ireland?
The M50 around Dublin is the only barrier-free toll; every other toll road has a plaza where you pay in cash or by card. Irish Car Rentals charges a Cross Border Travel fee for driving into Northern Ireland and does not allow its cars off the island of Ireland.
If you are spending the first days in Dublin, you may not need the car yet: see getting from Dublin Airport to the city with a Leap Card.
