How do Tutor and Autovelox cameras work in Italy?

A Tutor section has two gantries some distance apart. Each photographs every vehicle, a central system compares the times, and if your average speed between them was over the limit, the Polizia Stradale checks the record and issues the fine. Slowing down just under the second gantry does not help, because the whole stretch counts. Autostrade per l'Italia says the system covers more than 1,800 km of motorway carriageway (Tutor, Autostrade per l'Italia, checked 23 September 2026).

An Autovelox records speed at a single point. Article 142 requires speed-check sites to be signposted in advance and clearly visible, using signs or lit devices (Art. 142, Automobile Club d'Italia, checked 23 September 2026). Article 201 allows these violations to be notified later instead of on the spot, so there is usually no police stop and nothing to tell you until the letter arrives.

Where are the Tutor speed cameras around Florence?

Tutor sections added from 7 March 2025 include five on the A11 Firenze-Pisa Nord between Prato Est and Montecatini, in both directions, which is the road from Florence to Lucca and Pisa. On the A1 south of Florence there are four between Chiusi and Monte San Savino in both directions, on the way towards Rome, plus one between the Tevere service area and Fabro towards Florence (Autostrade per l'Italia press release, 7 March 2025, checked 23 September 2026). Coming from Bologna, Autostrade's Tutor table also lists a southbound section at Santa Lucia on the A1 Bologna-Firenze.

The same release says the full list of active Tutor devices on the national network is published by the Polizia di Stato on poliziadistato.it. Check it before a long drive, because sections are added over time.

In Florence itself, the Prefect authorised 14 fixed Autovelox sites in September 2021 to run 24 hours a day without a patrol present. They include Viadotto dell'Indiano, Viadotto Marco Polo, Viale Etruria, Viale Guidoni, Via Senese, Via Sestese, Viale XI Agosto, Viale Petrarca and Viale Galilei towards Piazzale Michelangelo (Comune di Firenze, checked 23 September 2026).

How much is a speeding fine in Italy?

Article 142 sets the fine by how far over the limit you were. The default limits are 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on main extra-urban roads, 90 km/h on secondary roads and 50 km/h in built-up areas, unless signs show otherwise.

Over the limit Fine (art. 142) Licence consequence 30% off within 5 days?
Up to 10 km/h EUR 42-173 None Yes
11-40 km/h EUR 173-694 None, except repeat offences in built-up areas Yes
41-60 km/h EUR 543-2,170 Suspension, 1 to 3 months No
Over 60 km/h EUR 845-3,382 Suspension, 6 to 12 months No

Sources: Art. 142 and Art. 202, Automobile Club d'Italia, checked 23 September 2026. Article 202 lets you pay the minimum within 60 days of notification, or 30% less within 5 days, but not where the offence carries a licence suspension.

Two multipliers matter to visitors. Article 195 raises speeding fines by one third for offences between 22:00 and 07:00. And under article 142, several speeding offences by the same vehicle within one hour on roads under the same authority are merged into the single heaviest fine, increased by one third (Art. 195 and Art. 142, checked 23 September 2026).

Worked example: an evening drive back to Florence

You return a day trip on the A1 and a Tutor section records an average of 151 km/h against a 130 limit: 21 km/h over, in the EUR 173-694 band.

Scenario Minimum within 60 days Within 5 days (30% off)
Before 22:00 EUR 173.00 EUR 121.10
After 22:00 (one third more) EUR 230.67 EUR 161.47

Notification and procedural costs are added to the fine and are not discounted. On top of that comes the rental company's handling charge. At 191 km/h, 61 km/h over, the minimum jumps to EUR 845 with a suspension, and the 5-day discount no longer applies.

How does an Italian speeding fine reach you after a rental?

The camera identifies the plate, and the plate belongs to the rental company. Hertz Italy's terms describe the chain plainly: fines arrive at Hertz, sometimes months later for electronic or remote detection; Hertz gives your details to the authority and, where consumer law does not prevent it, recovers its costs with a reasonable administrative charge per fine (Hertz Italy fines terms, checked 23 September 2026). That charge usually appears on your card long before the fine itself arrives.

Step Who acts Time limit
Offence recorded Tutor or Autovelox Day of the trip

For fines issued by Florence's municipal police, the handling of notices is contracted to Safety21. Their helpline, +39 055 0353400, answers in English and several other languages, Monday to Friday 08:30-17:30 and Saturday 08:30-13:30, and payment by card online goes through Xpay-Nexi, which may add its own fee (Florence fines information, checked 23 September 2026). A letter from an unfamiliar company is not a sign of a scam, but check that the date, time, place and plate match your rental agreement before you pay.
