Which Christmas liturgies need a ticket

The Holy See's celebrations calendar had a page for December 2026 with no entries yet on 22 October 2026. Last season's schedule shows what to expect. The Office of Liturgical Celebrations notice of 6 December 2025 set out these times, all with Pope Leo XIV presiding:

Celebration (2025–26 season) Time Where Ticket
Christmas Eve Mass, 24 Dec 22:00 Inside the basilica Yes
Christmas Day Mass, 25 Dec 10:00 Inside the basilica Yes
Urbi et Orbi message and blessing, 25 Dec 12:00 Central loggia, facing the Square Square only
First Vespers and Te Deum, 31 Dec 17:00 Inside the basilica Yes
Mass of Mary, Mother of God, 1 Jan 10:00 Inside the basilica Yes

The Prefecture's ticket information page explains why seats are scarce: places inside St Peter's are limited, and it names the Christmas Eve Mass, the 31 December Vespers and Te Deum and the 1 January Mass as the ones that can be "freely followed on the giant screens" in the Square. For the noon Urbi et Orbi, the visitors office of the Pontifical North American College, which helps US pilgrims with papal tickets, says on its Advent and Christmas page that no tickets are required.

Times, and whether 2026 follows the same pattern, are for the Holy See to confirm. Last season's notice was dated 6 December, two days before the ticket deadline, so request tickets before the times are out.

How to request free tickets

Tickets for papal liturgies are always free. The Prefecture's ticket page puts it in capitals, and the Rome tourist board's 2026 page on papal celebrations repeats it. Any site charging for "Christmas Mass tickets" is selling something the Vatican gives away.

The English pages give two collection points. The ticket page puts the ticket office just inside the Paul VI Audience Hall. The Prefecture structure page says the Bronze Door, under the right-hand colonnade of St Peter's Square, from 9:00 to 19:00 on the day before a liturgy. Neither page carries a date, so treat whatever your confirmation says as the rule.

Rome, Italy

Following Mass from St Peter's Square

Most people at a papal Christmas liturgy are outside. The Square is the default plan, not a consolation, and it is the only option once the 8 December deadline has passed.

Security comes first. The basilica's entry page says checks are run by the Italian State Police at stations in the right-hand hemicycle of the Square as you face the basilica, with at least four more gates on the same side. For a 9:15 Wednesday audience, the Prefecture's structure page advises arriving by 8:45 to allow for metal detectors and queues. Christmas crowds are larger, and PNAC's advice for ticket holders is to arrive several hours early.

Inside the basilica, the rules page says short clothing, sleeveless tops and hats are not allowed, and bulky equipment needs authorisation. Food and drink are not permitted inside, so eat before you queue.

Fitting the Vatican into Christmas week

The basilica's opening hours page gives 07:00 to 19:00 daily from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 and lists no Christmas changes. The Vatican Museums follow their own calendar and close on several days in Christmas week. Our guide to Rome sights open at Christmas and New Year lists the closures by date, and the Vatican Museums tickets guide covers booking and the dome.

If you travel by metro or bus, the Rome metro and bus tickets guide explains tapping a bank card at the gates, which saves hunting for an open ticket seller late on Christmas Eve.
