How much is a taxi from Mauritius airport to Port Louis?

Airport taxis charge a fixed fare to each destination. The airport operator's official 2026 fare list, effective from January 2026, includes these fares:

From SSR Airport to Fare (MUR)
Mahebourg, Blue Bay 1,000
Curepipe 1,500
Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes 1,800
Ebène 1,900
Port Louis 2,500
Flic en Flac 3,000
Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy 3,300
Grand Baie, Belle Mare, Le Morne 3,500

The same sheet sets three conditions:

  • Card payment: 10% extra. Cash avoids it.
  • Night, 23:00 to 05:00: a 10–20% surcharge may be applied.
  • Luggage: normal luggage is included, but oversized items may cost extra.

The taxi counter is at Level 0, Tour Operators Hall, opposite the customs exit in arrivals, according to the airport's taxi page. That page also gives a phone number and email for the airport taxi association, which you can use to ask about a pickup.

Can I take a bus from the airport to Port Louis?

Yes. The airport's public bus page lists three routes that stop there, and says the stop is in the car park:

Route Runs between Frequency Useful for
198 Port Louis (Victoria Square) – Mahebourg About every 15 min Port Louis
09 Curepipe – Mahebourg About every 10 min Curepipe, then Metro Express
10 Rivière des Galets – Mahebourg About every 20 min The south coast (Souillac, Chemin Grenier)

The airport puts the full Port Louis–Mahebourg journey on route 198 at about 85 minutes. The airport is near the Mahebourg end, so allow over an hour to Port Louis, and more at rush hour. The route 198 timetable shows the service running every day, with the last departures from each end at about 18:10 to 18:30 on weekdays and 18:00 to 18:30 on Sundays.

The National Land Transport Authority's timetable for route 24, the same Port Louis–Mahebourg corridor, shows the airport as fare stage 3A of 31 and lists it as an ordinary stopping service. We found no official listing for an express bus from the airport to Port Louis.

What the bus costs

Buses charge by fare stage, and you pay on board. We could not open a current official fare table. The last NLTA stage tariff we could read, effective August 2013, topped out at Rs 37 for an adult on the longest journeys. The government published a review of bus fares in May 2022, so today's fare will be higher. Either way it is a small fraction of the Rs 2,500 taxi fare. Carry small notes and coins.

Does the Metro Express go to the airport?

No. Metro Express Ltd describes the line as 20 stations from Port Louis to Curepipe, running about every 10 minutes. On 23 September 2026 it gave the operating hours as 06:00 to 19:00. We found no current Metro service to Rose-Belle or the airport on the operator's site.

You can still combine bus and metro: take bus 09 from the airport to Curepipe, then the Metro Express to Port Louis Victoria. The route 09 timetable runs from 05:20 to 20:00, and puts Curepipe about an hour after the airport. This makes sense if you are staying along the metro line, in Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes or Ebène for example, or if bus 198 is full.

Single-use metro tickets are valid for 60 minutes and must be tapped in and out, under the operator's conditions of travel. Food and drink other than water are not allowed on board. Our Metro Express and bus fares guide covers tickets and MECards.

Worked examples: one traveller and a group of four

These use the official 2026 taxi fares and the airport's bus timetables.

Scenario Best option What it costs
1 person, lands 11:00, cabin bag, Port Louis Bus 198 One stage fare; more than an hour on board
1 person, lands 11:00, large case Taxi, cash Rs 2,500
1 person, lands 17:30 Taxi Rs 2,500; last 198 buses leave around 18:10–18:30
4 people, 4 suitcases, Port Louis One taxi, cash Rs 2,500, about Rs 625 each
4 people, lands 23:30, paying by card One taxi Rs 2,500 + 10% card = Rs 2,750, plus a possible 10–20% night surcharge (up to Rs 3,250 if both apply to the base)

The sheet does not say whether the card and night extras are added one on top of the other. The last row assumes both are added to the Rs 2,500 base, so confirm the total at the counter. For a group of four, the per-person taxi cost is low enough that the bus saves little once you count the luggage and the time.

Rental desks are in the terminal. The airport's hire-a-car page lists each company with its counter and phone number. Before choosing this, read our guide to renting a car in Mauritius, which covers the licence rules and speed cameras.
