How do I get from Hosea Kutako to Windhoek?
The Namibia Airports Company (NAC), which runs the airport, describes HKIA as "situated over the Khomas Mountains some forty-five (45) kms east of Windhoek". On its HKIA overview, it says transport to and from the airport is by airport shuttle.
Its passenger information page adds that registered operators offer shuttle and taxi services at the airport. NAC asks passengers to contact the airport information desk and the loadmasters for help. It publishes no list of operators and no fares.
Neither NAC page mentions a public bus to the city. Treat the trip as a road transfer that you book or arrange yourself.
| Option | Cost | Time | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle, per seat | Operator's quote; NAC publishes no fare | 45 km plus stops at other hotels | You are alone or a couple, landing in daylight |
| Private shuttle or taxi, per vehicle | Operator's quote; agree it in advance | 45 km direct to your door | You are 3–4 people, have heavy bags, or land late |
| Rental car from the terminal | Rental rate plus fuel | 45 km, self-drive | You start a road trip right away |
| Friend or hotel pickup | Parking from N$10 for the first hour | 45 km each way for the driver | Someone local can meet you |
Is there a bus from Windhoek airport?
No public bus is listed by the airport operator. NAC names shuttles as the way to and from HKIA, and does not name a bus service on either its overview or its passenger page. Plan for a shuttle, taxi or car rather than expecting a cheap bus at the kerb.
Shuttles and taxis: how to book and pay
NAC does not set or publish shuttle fares, so the price is whatever the operator quotes. Get a written quote before you travel, confirm whether it is per seat or per vehicle, and check what happens if your flight is delayed.
Money is easy to sort out on arrival. NAC lists Cambio Seguro and Nova Cambio bureaux de change, NAMPOST postal and banking services, and Bank Windhoek and First National Bank ATMs at HKIA.
The currency is the Namibian dollar, which the environment and tourism ministry says equals the South African rand in value. The rand is also legal tender in Namibia. The same ministry page says major credit cards are widely accepted in Namibia, but individual shuttle and taxi operators set their own payment rules.
Picking up a rental car
Car rental is one of the facilities NAC lists at HKIA on its facilities page, along with short-term and long-term parking and a tourism information centre. Picking up at the airport saves paying for a transfer into town and back out again at the start of a road trip.
If you are heading north to Etosha or onto gravel roads, choose the vehicle and insurance before you land. Our guide to 4x4 rentals and gravel roads from Windhoek covers what to check.
Worked example: one traveller vs a group of four
NAC publishes no shuttle fares, so the example uses the structure of the prices rather than invented amounts. Let S be a shared shuttle's per-seat price and P a private transfer's per-vehicle price.
| Travellers | Shared shuttle | Private transfer | Usually better |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person, one bag | 1 × S | P | Shared shuttle, unless you land late |
| 2 people | 2 × S | P | Compare 2 × S with P |
| 4 people with luggage | 4 × S | P | Private, whenever P is below 4 × S |
Private transfers pay off once the per-seat total for your group passes the vehicle price. Big bags often push a group of four towards a private vehicle anyway, because a shared shuttle has to leave room for other passengers' luggage.
If a friend collects you instead, the latest parking notice on NAC's website, dated 1 April 2020, charges N$10 for up to 1 hour and N$20 for 1 to 2 hours. It charges N$105 for 12 to 24 hours and N$55 per day after that, according to the NAC parking notice. Losing the ticket costs N$200 plus the number of days, and wheel clamping costs N$250.
Eros Airport: the other Windhoek airport
Eros is Windhoek's city airport. NAC says it is five kilometres from the city centre and serves charter and fly-in safari traffic as well as scheduled flights, according to its Eros overview. Airport shuttles connect Eros both to HKIA and to downtown Windhoek, and Eros also has car rental.
Check which airport your ticket shows. A connection between a long-haul flight at HKIA and a light-aircraft flight at Eros means a road transfer of its own, so leave a wide margin.
Before you leave the arrivals hall
- Clear immigration with your visa sorted. NAC's e-visa page recommends that visa-on-arrival nationalities apply in advance on the Home Affairs portal, and carry a printed copy of the e-visa or approval notice.
- Withdraw or change enough money for the transfer and your first day.
- Find your booked driver, or ask the information desk and loadmasters to point you to a registered operator.
- If you are driving, check the car and your route before leaving the car park.
