What happens between landing and the taxi rank?
Tribhuvan airport's FAQ page describes the arrival order: visa on arrival if you need one, immigration, baggage, then customs through the green or red channel. It also says two money exchange counters and an ATM are in the arrival area before immigration, which is where to get rupees for any fare that is not paid by card.
If you are buying your visa at the airport, you fill in the form, pay the fee at the bank counter and then join the immigration queue. The UK Foreign Office says forms and terminals are available at the airport and that the fee can be paid by card, but advises carrying US dollars as a back-up; the Nepal Tourism Board lists the arrival fee as US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days. The U.S. State Department warns that a visa on arrival can take several hours at busy times. Fees, exemptions and the NepaliPort arrival registration that Canada says is required are covered in our Nepal visa on arrival guide.
How much is a taxi from Kathmandu airport to Thamel?
The airport's facilities page says: once you step out of the arrival gate, the pre-paid taxi service is on your right. The Nepal Tourism Board's FAQ also mentions the pre-paid service and warns that taxi drivers, travel agents and hotel staff wait outside the terminal to offer rides.
Neither the airport nor the Tourism Board publishes the pre-paid fare to Thamel, and we could not find it on an official page. Read the price at the counter, pay there, and keep the receipt until you are at your door.
Street taxis are the other car option. The Tourism Board says taxis are recognised by the taxi sign on top and a black licence plate, and that private taxis charge more. The U.S. State Department says almost all drivers insist on agreeing a price before the trip even when a meter is fitted.
For a sense of what the meter would show, The Kathmandu Post reported on 12 April 2026 that Bagmati Province had set taxi fares at a Rs58 flag-down plus Rs12 for every 200 metres. That works out to Rs60 per kilometre after the flag-down, so a 5 km meter reading would be about Rs358 and 8 km about Rs538. We could not find the fare order on a provincial government page, so use these figures only as a benchmark when you negotiate, not as a guaranteed price.
Ride apps, hotel pickups and the city bus
The U.S. State Department says ride-sharing apps such as Pathao are widely available in Nepal. You need mobile data and a way to pay in the app, and you have to find your driver outside a busy terminal. The airport's free wi-fi covers the international terminal from departures to arrivals, so you can book before walking out.
Hotel and agency pickups are a common choice for first-time visitors and late arrivals. The airport says private vehicles can pick up passengers in the new arrival area of the international terminal, so a named driver can meet you there. The price is whatever the hotel charges; ask for it in writing when you book.
The airport says passengers can also reach the city by city bus. The Tourism Board says the government-run green Sajha buses run along the valley's main north-south and east-west roads. The Kathmandu Post report above put Kathmandu Valley bus and microbus fares at Rs24 for up to 5 km and Rs33 for up to 10 km from April 2026. We could not confirm which route runs from the airport stop to Thamel, so the bus is realistic only if you travel light and can ask the conductor.
Which option should I take?
This table combines the airport's own facility information, the Tourism Board and State Department guidance on taxis, and the reported April 2026 fare levels.
| Option | Cost | Time and hassle | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-paid taxi | Fixed price posted at the counter; not published online | Shortest wait; pay before you meet the driver | First visit, heavy bags, arriving at night |
| Street taxi | Negotiated; meter benchmark Rs58 + Rs60/km | Need to agree the price before leaving | You know the usual fare and want to bargain |
| Ride app (Pathao) | Quoted in the app | Needs data and a pickup point outside | You have a local SIM or eSIM already |
| Hotel pickup | Set by the hotel | Driver waits in the arrival area | Late arrival, group, or first-time visitor |
| City bus | About Rs24–33 per person | Crowded, route to Thamel unconfirmed | Light luggage, daytime, tight budget |
Journey times are not published by the airport and depend heavily on traffic, so allow extra margin if you have an onward bus or flight the same day.
Worked examples: one traveller and a group of four
Solo traveller, one large bag, evening arrival. Change enough cash at the counters before immigration, clear the visa and immigration queues, then go straight to the pre-paid counter on your right. You pay one known price and skip the negotiation with drivers waiting outside. A Pathao ride may cost less, but only if you already have data and are comfortable finding the driver in the dark.
Group of four with trekking bags. One car usually fits four people only if the luggage is modest; with four large duffels, ask the pre-paid counter or your hotel for a larger vehicle, or book two cars. On the bus, four people would pay about Rs96–132 in total at the reported fares, but four trekking bags on a crowded city bus rarely works. Two negotiated street taxis at the meter benchmark for 5 km would be about Rs716 in total, which gives you a figure to compare against the counter price and the hotel's quote.
If something goes wrong
The airport says a police help desk sits outside the international terminal building to answer queries. Go there if a driver refuses the pre-paid fare, asks for more money on arrival, or if you cannot find your hotel pickup.
