Do you need a vignette at all?

It depends on where you drive. Not every motorway section is charged. Around Bratislava, much of the network is free for cars, according to an NDS notice from July 2026:

Section near Bratislava Car vignette needed?
D4 outer bypass from Rača to the D2 junction near Jarovce No
D1 from the Pečňa junction (Petržalka) to the D1/D4 interchange No
D2 from Stupava to the Jarovce junction No
R7 from Bratislava–Nivy to the D4 junction No
About 2 km of D4 at the Jarovce/Kittsee border with Austria Yes
D2 between the Čunovo/Rajka border with Hungary and the D2/D4 junction Yes
D1 beyond the D1/D4 interchange towards Senec and the rest of Slovakia Yes
R7 beyond the D4 junction towards Šamorín Yes

The table decides a lot. A city-only stay in Bratislava can avoid vignettes entirely. Driving in from Vienna through the Jarovce/Kittsee crossing cannot, because the few kilometres after the border are charged. That border stretch is also where most offenders were caught during the summer 2026 checks.

How much is the Slovak e-vignette in 2026?

Prices come from the NDS price page, include VAT and apply to cars up to 3.5 tonnes and all M1 passenger cars.

Vignette Price Valid for
1-day €8.10 The chosen day, until midnight
10-day €10.80 10 days including the start day
30-day €17.10 30 days including the start day
365-day €90 365 days including the start day

The 10-day vignette costs only €2.70 more than a single day. If you will use a charged motorway on two separate days within ten days, the 10-day one is cheaper than two 1-day vignettes (€16.20).

Buying it correctly

The NDS FAQ covers the common panic moment. If you realise you are on a charged section without a vignette, buy one online or at the next petrol station before midnight that day. NDS adds that the motorway police can stop and check you before you get the chance, so buy it before you set off.

What is the fine for no vignette in Slovakia?

The vignette act (Act 488/2013) creates two separate routes to a fine.

Who is fined How it is detected Amount
The driver Stopped by police €50–200 on the spot, or €100–500 if handled by the district office
The vehicle operator, such as a rental company Fixed or mobile camera €150 fixed order; treated as fully paid if two-thirds (€100) arrives within 15 days

For a rental car, the camera route matters most. The order goes to the operator, which is the rental company. For cars registered in another EU country, the order is also sent in one of that country's official languages. The authority has up to two years to issue it. Only one such fine can be issued per vehicle per calendar month.

The rental company will pay or contest it and then charge you. Avis Austria, for example, charges a €40 processing fee per fine on top of the fine itself. So a missing €10.80 vignette can become €190 or more.

Can you drive a Vienna airport rental car to Bratislava?

Many visitors fly into Vienna rather than Bratislava. For the bus and train options, see Bratislava airport, Vienna bus and train basics.

An Austrian rental car solves only half the vignette question. Avis Austria's terms state that every car rented in Austria comes with an Austrian motorway vignette. Nothing in those terms covers a Slovak one, so buy it yourself for the car's Austrian plate.

Cross-border permission is the second check. The same Avis terms require prior consent and charge a cross-border fee of €12 a day, capped at €84 per rental. They list Slovakia as a permitted country, but the same page also includes Slovakia in a list of countries you may not enter. When terms contradict themselves like this, get written confirmation on the rental agreement before you drive over the border. Some premium models are excluded in any case.

If your Austrian car somehow lacks a vignette, oesterreich.gv.at lists 2026 prices of €9.60 for one day and €12.80 for ten days. The digital annual and two-month vignettes bought online by consumers only become valid on the 18th day after purchase.

Road rules that catch visitors

According to Slovakia.travel, the limits are 50 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside them. On motorways and expressways the maximum is 130 km/h and the minimum 80 km/h; inside towns, motorways are limited to 90 km/h. Lights must be on all year, day and night. The alcohol limit is zero.

Winter tyres are required whenever there is snow or ice on the road, not from a fixed date. The Your Europe page describes this as a road fully covered in snow or ice. For mountain trips such as the High Tatras between November and March, ask the rental company whether winter tyres are fitted and whether they cost extra.

Camera fines are fixed and go to the keeper

Slovakia sends camera speeding fines to the vehicle keeper at fixed rates, under section 139a of the road traffic act (version in force from 1 September 2026). For a rental car, the keeper is the rental company.

Excess over the limit In a town Outside towns, including motorways
6–10 km/h €15 —
11–15 km/h €39 €30
16–20 km/h €66 €42
21–25 km/h €96 €66
26–30 km/h €141 €99
31–35 km/h €201 €162
36–40 km/h €270 €201
Top band €798 above 70 km/h €798 above 75 km/h

As with vignette fines, the fine counts as fully paid if two-thirds of it reaches the account within 15 days of delivery. A roadside stop by a police officer is handled under separate rules.

Worked example: Vienna airport, Bratislava and the High Tatras

A traveller rents a car at Vienna airport for five days. Day 1 is Vienna to Bratislava; days 2–3 are in the city. Day 4 is the D1 to the High Tatras, and day 5 is the drive back to Vienna.

Choice Vignette cost
1-day vignette for day 1 only, city days on free sections €8.10, but days 4–5 are uncovered
Separate 1-day vignettes for days 1, 4 and 5 €24.30
One 10-day vignette starting on day 1 €10.80

The 10-day vignette wins by €13.50 and removes the risk of forgetting a day. Add the Avis cross-border fee of €12 a day for five days: €60, below the €84 cap. Road charges for the trip total €70.80, with the Austrian vignette already included in the rental.

The risk is on the way back. Drive at 121 km/h on a 90 km/h road outside a town and a camera records 31 km/h over: €162. Paid within 15 days that is €108, plus Avis's €40 processing fee: €148, or €202 if the letter arrives too late for the discount.
