Korea's core emergency numbers are 112 for police and 119 for fire or ambulance. The medical emergency line 1339 connects callers to the nearest hospital, which is useful if you're not sure where to go for a non-life-threatening but urgent medical issue. For anything short of an emergency — a transportation question, needing interpretation help, or general travel confusion — the 1330 Korea Travel Hotline, run by the Korea Tourism Organization, is built specifically for tourists.
What usually gets skipped on day one
New arrivals often skip the orientation walk in favor of heading straight to a well-known sight, then find themselves navigating an unfamiliar transit system for the first time while already tired from travel. Doing a short walk near your accommodation first — even just to a subway station and back — makes the rest of the day's navigation noticeably less stressful, since you're not learning your immediate surroundings and a new transit system at the same time.
What to confirm before you go out that first night
Before heading out for your first evening, confirm you have: a way back to your accommodation that doesn't depend on cash you don't have yet, the emergency and hotline numbers saved, and a rough idea of when local transit stops running so you're not stranded.
