What makes a Swiss train timetable different
A Swiss train timetable isn't a list of individual departures someone assembled route by route — it's built around a repeating pattern, commonly called a clock-face timetable (Taktfahrplan), where a given service leaves at the same minute past the hour, hour after hour, for as long as it runs that day. A train that departs Zurich HB at 14 minutes past the hour typically also leaves at 14 minutes past every other hour on the same line, which is why regular travelers on a route rarely need to check a timetable at all — they already know their train's minute.
Zurich Airport's own transport page is a clean example of this in practice: it states that SBB trains depart for Zurich's main station every 10 minutes, a frequency regular enough that it functions less like a scheduled service and more like a conveyor belt.
The point isn't the trains — it's the connections
The repeating pattern only becomes powerful once you notice what it's actually built for: making connections between different lines land at the same station at close to the same moment, on a predictable, repeating basis. Because every service on a clock-face system returns to its slot every hour, planners can design a hub station so that, say, the regional train from a small town, the intercity train toward a major city, and a connecting bus all arrive within a few minutes of each other — and then repeat that same meeting, hour after hour, without needing to coordinate it fresh each day.

None of this means disruption never happens. Engineering works, weather, and unplanned incidents interrupt the pattern like anywhere else, and regional and seasonal services — a rural bus, a lake boat — thin out or change frequency outside peak times and outside the main travel season, so a repeating minute you saw on one date isn't guaranteed on a public holiday, an evening, or in winter for a summer-only boat line.
Why this took decades to build, not just good habits
A repeating national pattern like this isn't something a rail operator adds on top of an existing timetable — it has to be designed into the infrastructure itself, since a connection can only repeat reliably if the track, platforms and signaling actually support trains arriving and departing at the same relative moment every hour. Building or rebuilding stations, junctions and double-tracking to make that possible took Switzerland's rail network a long, deliberate infrastructure program stretched over decades, not a scheduling memo. That's a useful thing to understand as a visitor, because it explains why the system feels less like "trains that happen to run on time" and more like a designed machine: the timetable and the physical railway were built together, each shaped around the other, rather than a timetable being layered onto tracks that were built for some other purpose.
It also explains why disruption to one part of the network tends to ripple further than it might elsewhere. Because so many connections are timed tightly against each other, a delay on one line can cascade into missed connections on lines that were never late themselves — the same tight design that makes normal operation feel seamless makes recovery from disruption more visible when it happens, rather than less.
