The pineapple cake you are holding has a convenience store's own brand on the front, and somewhere on the back, in small Chinese type, is the name of a different company entirely. That second name is not a printing accident and it is not optional: Taiwanese law puts it there, with a street address and a telephone number, precisely so that a buyer can find out who made the food.
This article is about the goods rather than the counter. It sets out the ownership and manufacturing structure behind the two dominant chains as their own filings describe it, then decodes the fields the law requires on a packaged food label, then turns that into a short list of what is actually worth putting in the basket. Store counts, density statistics and in-store services are covered in a separate article and are not repeated here.
Who owns the two big chains?
7-ELEVEN Taiwan and FamilyMart Taiwan sit inside two structurally different companies, and the difference shows up on the shelf. President Chain Store Corporation (統一超商, TWSE 2912) was incorporated on 10 June 1987 and listed on 22 August 1997, and describes its main business as operating convenience stores and retailing tobacco, alcohol and household goods (統一超商投資人關係:公司簡介, checked 15 September 2026).
Its largest shareholder is a food manufacturer. PCSC's own shareholder list records 統一企業股份有限公司 — Uni-President Enterprises Corporation — holding 471,996,430 shares, or 45.40%, as of 22 March 2026 (統一超商:主要股東名單, checked 15 September 2026). Uni-President's 2025 annual report states the same holding from the other side and adds an indirect layer, giving 483,506,942 shares or 46.51% in total (統一企業 2025年報, published 27 April 2026, checked 15 September 2026).
The more telling disclosure is in PCSC's own annual report, in the section listing customers and suppliers above 10% of turnover. For 2025 it names exactly one supplier — 統一企業股份有限公司 — at 10.28% of non-consolidated net purchases, and records the relationship in the adjacent column as 母公司, parent company (統一超商 2025年報, published 21 April 2026, checked 15 September 2026). More than a tenth of what PCSC buys, it buys from its own parent.
FamilyMart Taiwan (全家便利商店股份有限公司, TPEx 5903) was founded on 18 August 1988 and has been quoted since 25 February 2002. It does not present a food-manufacturing parent on its corporate page. Instead it lists manufacturing among its own affiliates: 晉欣食品股份有限公司, a fresh-food maker founded in 2007 that became a wholly owned FamilyMart subsidiary in 2022; and 福比股份有限公司, established in February 2016 as a joint venture between FamilyMart and Japan's OKIKO株式會社 to produce bread on Japanese automated equipment for the FamilyMart channel (關於FamilyMart:公司資訊, checked 15 September 2026).
| Chain | Parent or affiliated group | What that group manufactures | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-ELEVEN Taiwan (統一超商 / PCSC) | Uni-President Enterprises, 45.40% direct and 46.51% including indirect holdings; PCSC's filing labels it 母公司 | Instant noodles and noodle blocks, chilled and fresh dairy, tea and bottled water, juices, coffee, ice products, processed meat, soy sauce and seasonings, flour, feed, bread and cakes | PCSC 2025年報 / 統一企業 2025年報 |
| FamilyMart Taiwan (全家) | No food-manufacturing parent disclosed; the factories are affiliates it owns or co-owns | 晉欣食品 (fresh food, 100% owned since 2022), 福比 (bread, JV with Japan's OKIKO, plants from 2017 and 2025), 長家國際食品 (pasta, with 長榮空廚, from 2023) | 關於FamilyMart:公司資訊 |
| Uni-President group bakery (統一聖娜多堡 / Semeur 聖娜) | Group company under the Uni-President Group's distribution system | Bread, sold under the Semeur 聖娜 brand and, since 2025, delivered to some 7-ELEVEN stores by dedicated vehicle | PECOS 集團公司介紹 / PCSC 2025年報 |
| 南聯國際貿易 (Nan Lien) | Uni-President Group's trading system, founded April 1979 | Does not manufacture; agency and distribution of beer, wine, whisky, drinks, seasonings, personal care and health products, plus its own brands | 統一企業 事業版圖:商流貿易 |
Uni-President's own site describes the group as four "specialist business systems" — food manufacturing, distribution, trading, and investment — and says the distribution system, PCSC, integrates around forty vertically and horizontally related companies (統一企業 流通事業體系, checked 15 September 2026). The convenience store is not a customer of the food group. It is a limb of it.
What does the parent group manufacture?
Uni-President's revenue breakdown by division is the clearest single answer to the question this article asks, because it names the product categories and puts a percentage on each. For 2025 the company's dairy and beverage group accounted for 57.61% of parent-company revenue, with fresh milk alone at 18.49%, tea drinks at 14.68%, a second dairy division covering flavoured milk, drinking yoghurt, chilled lactic drinks, probiotics, soy and rice milk and puddings at 11.41%, coffee beans at 7.25%, and packaged water and sports drinks at 2.79%. Its household food division — instant noodles, dry noodles, noodle blocks and flavour sauces — was 11.53%, its bakery group 10.19%, and its general food group 5.21%, covering processed meat, frozen prepared food, soy sauce and seasonings, and ice products (統一企業 2025年報, checked 15 September 2026).
Two lines in that same table are the point of this article. The company runs a division called PL烘焙業務開發部, described as the development, production and channel operation of contract-manufactured bread, toast and cake lines, at 2.10% of parent revenue. It runs a second called PL業務開發部, described the same way for dairy, beverage, ice, chilled and meat lines, at 3.50%. "PL" is private label, and 代工 is contract manufacturing. Uni-President has two named, quantified business units whose declared job is making products that carry somebody else's brand — together 5.60% of the parent company's revenue in 2025.
The filing does not say whose brands those are. That limit matters and is returned to below. What the filing does establish is that private-label production is a disclosed, structural line of business inside the group that owns the largest convenience store chain in Taiwan.
The brands you already recognise come from the same factories. Uni-President's own research page lists the categories its product development covers — dairy, beverages, instant noodles, meat, prepared food, ice products, desserts, bakery, flour and edible oil — and names specific results including 瑞穗 72°C pasteurised fresh milk, 純喫茶, 茶裏王 tea, the non-fried noodle range, 滿漢大餐 instant noodles and AB and LP33 drinking yoghurts (統一企業 研究發展, checked 15 September 2026). Those sit in the chilled cabinet and the noodle aisle of the same store, under their own names.
What must a Taiwanese label show?
Article 22 of the 食品安全衛生管理法 (Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation) requires ten items to appear clearly, in Chinese and common symbols, on the container or outer packaging of food and food ingredients. The version in force was last amended on 12 June 2019 (全國法規資料庫, 食品安全衛生管理法第22條, checked 15 September 2026).
Item five is the one that matters here: 製造廠商或國內負責廠商名稱、電話號碼及地址 — the name, telephone number and address of the manufacturer or of the domestic responsible firm. The word is "or", which is exactly why the name on the back is sometimes a factory and sometimes a brand owner's office.
The fourth paragraph of the same article closes the gap, but not all the way to you. Where only the domestic responsible firm is labelled, the company must report the name, phone number and address of the manufacturer, the contract manufacturer (受託製造廠商) or the importer to the local competent authority, and the authority must make that available for other competent authorities to inspect. The Ministry of Health and Welfare confirmed this obligation took effect on 10 December 2015, judged by the product's manufacturing date, that reporting runs through the food business registration platform, and that failure to report carries a fine of NT$30,000 to NT$3,000,000 (衛生福利部, 如實通報製造或輸入廠商, 22 December 2015, checked 15 September 2026).
| Required field | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 製造廠商或國內負責廠商名稱、電話號碼及地址 | Either the factory, or the firm responsible for the product in Taiwan — the law allows either | Search the company name; if the address is an office tower rather than an industrial district, you are probably looking at the brand owner, not the maker |
| 原產地(國) | Country of origin, mandatory and separate from the company name | A Taiwanese responsible firm plus a foreign origin means the product was imported, not made locally |
| 品名 and 內容物名稱 | Product name, and contents listed from highest to lowest content when mixed | Compare the ingredient order against a branded equivalent on the same shelf |
| 食品添加物名稱 | Every additive named; functional groupings must still name each additive | This is the field FamilyMart's Clean Label scheme is built around |
| 有效日期 | Expiry date, a mandatory field in its own right | Fresh-food items in these stores turn over fast; a long date means a shelf-stable product, not a store-made one |
| 營養標示 and 含基因改造食品原料 | Nutrition panel and GMO ingredient declaration | Both are legally required fields, not voluntary marketing additions |
How do you read the back?
Turn the pack over and look for the block of small type that ends in an address, because that block is the legal disclosure and everything above it is design. In practice the fastest method is to photograph it and translate the company name, since Article 22 requires the label to be in Chinese and does not require an English version.
What you learn depends on which of the two permitted options the company used. If the name is a food factory in an industrial area, that is your manufacturer. If it is a firm whose address is a city office and whose name matches the brand on the front, the maker has been reported to the authorities rather than printed, and the printed telephone number is the route to asking.
There is a second number sometimes printed on Taiwanese food packaging: a food business registration number. Taiwan's registration system began on 1 May 2014, and businesses in categories and sizes announced by the central authority may not trade without registering. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has published templates for businesses to print and display, describing a sixteen-character number that encodes the local health bureau, the business identifier, a premises or factory serial number and a check digit (衛生福利部, 食品業者登錄有字號,民眾看得到!, 15 May 2014, checked 15 September 2026).
The one thing a visitor most wants — a public database that turns a brand into a factory — is the thing that is not on offer. The fourth paragraph of Article 22 says the reported manufacturer information is opened for other competent authorities to inspect, not for the public. The disclosure runs between government bodies.
The registration platform is a separate matter and a partially open one. A Ministry of Health and Welfare release dated 1 December 2014 states that by 30 November 2014 more than 60,000 food businesses had registered and that the platform had opened a consumer query function for registration numbers, encouraging buyers to confirm a business's registration before contracting (衛生福利部, 食品業者登錄突破6萬家, checked 15 September 2026). The Taiwan FDA's registration section points to the same platform and publishes a free consultation line, 0809-080-209 (食藥署 食品業者登錄專區, checked 15 September 2026).
That lookup could not be exercised for this article. Repeated requests to the platform at fadenbook.fda.gov.tw over HTTPS timed out without a response on 15 September 2026, so whether the consumer query still works, and what it returns, is unverified here. A registration number confirms that a business is registered. It does not, on its own, tell you that this particular business baked this particular biscuit.
Which own-brand lines are documented?
Both chains publish own-brand names, and using the published ones avoids the trap of shopping from a list someone assembled from memory. PCSC's 2025 annual report names 御飯糰 rice balls, which reached their thirtieth anniversary in 2025; 星級饗宴, a premium fresh-food line developed with partner brands; 天素地蔬, its vegetarian and plant-based range; Simple Fit, light meal boxes, salads and snacks aimed at people eating out; 饗喫鍋, single-portion hotpot; and 莎拉沐自助 BAR, described in the same report as a PCSC own brand built on fruit and vegetables cut fresh daily. On drinks it names CITY CAFÉ, which added a 特選咖啡 selection in 2025, CITY PRIMA, which reached 7,000 stores, CITY TEA 現萃茶 and the !+? CAFE RESERVE+TEA brand.
The governance sections of that report are where the manufacturing reality is stated plainly. PCSC has an internal rule titled 自有商品委外代工場實地評鑑管理辦法 — on-site evaluation of outsourced contract factories for own-brand goods — and says it endeavours to require own-brand food suppliers to hold ISO 22000 certification. In 2025 it carried out 91 evaluation sessions across own-brand food suppliers, contract factories, direct raw-material suppliers and egg suppliers. By the end of 2025 all 40 qualifying own-brand contract factories held ISO 45001 occupational safety certification. The chain's own report, in other words, describes a network of dozens of outside factories making the goods that carry its brands.
FamilyMart's documentation runs the other way, toward named partners. It launched its own brand FamilyMart Collection in 2013, the year it also started selling Fami霜淇淋 soft serve. In 2018 it became the first Taiwanese retail channel to adopt the Clean Label scheme, applying for clean-label assessment on all of its domestically produced FamilyMart Collection food, with non-meat products audited by 慈悅國際股份有限公司 and meat products by the China Grain Products Research and Development Institute. Its clean-label pages name manufacturing collaborators for specific items: its cold-pressed brewed tea is produced with 佳美食品 using HPP high-pressure processing and leaves from the 王德傳 tea house, and its dried fruit is made with 豆之家 (全家 Clean Label, checked 15 September 2026).
Its bakery brand is documented separately. 全家烘焙 covers 匠土司 toast, 極鬆餅 pancakes, 滿餡麵包 filled breads and a 健康麵包 range, and the brand page states that bread product development takes the eight Clean Label exclusions as its highest requirement and that the operation uses Japanese technical guidance and selected key materials (全家烘焙, checked 15 September 2026).
What could not be verified?
The specific link between a particular item on the shelf and a particular factory could not be established from any source read for this article, and that is the largest gap in it. Uni-President discloses two private-label contract-manufacturing divisions with revenue percentages but does not name their customers. PCSC discloses that it audits 40 own-brand contract factories but does not publish which factory makes which product. FamilyMart names partners for a handful of clean-label items and owns three food plants, but its own pages do not map its brands onto its plants — so this article does not claim, for example, that 匠土司 comes from the Fubi bread plant, even though the company documents both a bakery brand and a bread-making joint venture.
Two brand names supplied as candidates for this article turned out not to be documented for Taiwan. Neither 7-SELECT nor iSelect appears anywhere in PCSC's 2025 annual report; the only instance of "SELECT" in that document is the LOFT SELECT concept store opened with Japan's LOFT. 7-SELECT is used by 7-Eleven in other markets, and treating it as a Taiwanese own brand on that basis would be an assumption, not a fact. The documented Taiwanese names are the ones listed in the section above.
One number in PCSC's filing is internally inconsistent as printed. In the table of suppliers above 10% of net purchases, the amounts shown alongside the 10.28% figure do not reconcile with the stated purchase total in the same table. This article therefore cites the percentage and the stated relationship — 母公司 — and does not quote the amount.
No official statistic on the own-brand share of Taiwanese convenience store sales was found. The Ministry of Economic Affairs statistics department publishes convenience store turnover and store counts, but no series specific to private label surfaced in checking, so no share figure appears here. And no quality or value claim in this article rests on a measurement, because none is published: the company material quoted is corporate self-description and the certification schemes referenced certify process and additive policy, not taste.
What should you put in the basket?
Shop the documentation rather than the packaging, and the decisions get simpler. The table below matches a want to the line that the companies themselves have written about, with the reason drawn from their own material rather than from taste.
| What you want | Where the documentation points | Why, from the company's own material |
|---|---|---|
| A gift where you can identify the maker | Any packaged item, either chain | Article 22 requires a manufacturer or domestic responsible firm with name, phone and address on every pack |
| Bread from a factory the retailer part-owns | FamilyMart 全家烘焙 — 匠土司, 極鬆餅, 滿餡麵包 | FamilyMart owns the Fubi bread JV with Japan's OKIKO and runs its own bakery brand |
| A drink with a named production partner | FamilyMart 冷壓鮮萃茶 | The clean-label page names 佳美食品 as producer, 王德傳 leaves and HPP processing |
| Minimal-additive packaged snacks | FamilyMart Collection items carrying 潔淨標章 or 雙潔淨標章 | Since 2018 all domestically produced FamilyMart Collection food has been submitted for clean-label assessment |
| Vegetarian or light fresh food | 7-ELEVEN 天素地蔬 and Simple Fit | Both are named in PCSC's 2025 annual report as differentiated fresh-food brands |
| A branded product from the group behind the chain | 統一 茶裏王, 純喫茶, 瑞穗 fresh milk, 滿漢大餐 | All named on Uni-President's own research and development page |
Three habits make the difference between buying a souvenir and buying a mystery. Photograph the back label before you reach the till, because in a busy Taipei store you will not read small Chinese type standing up. Check the country-of-origin field against the company name, since an imported product also carries a Taiwanese responsible firm and the two together are what tell you where the food was made. And if the item is a gift, prefer the lines the companies write about publicly, because those are the ones where a name, a partner or a certification scheme is on the record.
The structural fact underneath all of this is worth carrying out of the store. In Taiwan the convenience store is not a neutral shelf that food companies rent. One chain is inside a food manufacturer that runs two divisions dedicated to making other people's brands; the other bought the factories that make its bread, its bento and its pasta. Either way, the company on the front of the pack and the company that ran the oven are related by ownership or by contract, and the law makes you able to see the second one. That is a better reason to turn the package over than any claim on the front.
What is outside this article's scope?
This article does not cover store counts, density statistics or in-store services, which are handled in a separate article; nor does it cover Hi-Life, OK Mart, supermarket private label, Taiwan's tax-free or customs rules for carrying food home, or any assessment of product quality.
