Gatwick, Stansted or Luton: Comparing the Transfer to Central London

This matters before you compare price or speed, because arriving at the wrong side of London can cost you more time than a slower train would have. Gatwick's trains, both express and standard, terminate at London Victoria. Stansted Express terminates at London Liverpool Street, on the opposite side of the centre. Luton's rail route ends at London St Pancras International, reached only after a shuttle transfer within the airport's own grounds.

Gatwick: express versus standard rail

Gatwick Express runs non-stop to Victoria in an average of 32–34 minutes, with a fastest journey of about 30 minutes, according to the operator's own journey page, and trains run from 02:13 to 23:45. Southern and Thameslink also run standard services on the same corridor, calling at more stations (including London Bridge on some services) and taking a little longer, but their exact single fares were not published on the pages checked for this guide, so confirm the current price on Southern's or Thameslink's own booking page before you travel. Stansted: one express service, one clear fare anchor

Stansted Express is the direct rail option, taking about 48 minutes to Liverpool Street and running every 15 minutes during the day, per the operator's own site. Advance single fares start from GBP 9.90, described by Stansted Express as a saving of up to 57% against paying on the day, so book ahead if your travel date and time are fixed. National Express also runs coaches to central London from Stansted, listed from around GBP 10.50 one-way on the operator's own airport page, though coach journey time depends on the specific route and stops and runs longer than the rail option in most cases.

Luton: a shuttle plus a separate rail ticket

Luton is structurally different from the other two: there is no single through-ticket from the terminal itself. You first take the Luton DART automated shuttle from the airport terminal to Luton Airport Parkway station, a four-minute ride costing GBP 4.90 for an adult single per Luton DART's own fares page, running around the clock at 4–7 minute intervals depending on time of day. From Luton Airport Parkway, Thameslink (and East Midlands Railway) trains run to St Pancras; Thameslink's own airport page lists an anytime single fare of GBP 15.70 from central London, with a stated journey time from Luton Airport Parkway of around 24 minutes into the centre. Add the DART fare and the rail fare together, and budget the connection time between the two services, since they are not run by the same company and are not covered by one ticket.

What a cheap flight really costs once you add the transfer

A budget fare into Stansted or Luton can look far cheaper than a similar flight into Gatwick, but the transfer narrows that gap. Stansted Express and the Luton DART-plus-rail combination both add a real cash cost on top of the flight — roughly GBP 9.90 upward for Stansted, and Luton DART's GBP 4.90 plus a separate Thameslink/EMR fare (confirm the current fare on the operator's page, since it varies by ticket type and time of travel) for Luton. Gatwick's coach option, from GBP 6.00, can be the cheapest of the three door-to-station options, provided you are not in a hurry and your final destination is near Victoria.

Choosing between the three

If your final destination is close to Victoria, or you value the fastest fixed-schedule journey, Gatwick usually wins on time. If Liverpool Street or the City is your target and you can book ahead, Stansted Express's advance fares make it competitive on price as well as direction. Luton suits journeys ending near St Pancras or King's Cross, but budget the extra step and the two separate fares rather than assuming a single ticket will cover the whole trip.
