If you are choosing between MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, compare this table with our Met Museum tickets guide, which explains who qualifies for the Met's pay-what-you-wish rate. For families, check the children's age limit at each: at MoMA it is 16 and under.
Who gets in free
The discounts page is longer than most visitors expect, but much of it is aimed at locals. The free options that matter for a visitor:
- Children 16 and under: always free; booking online in advance is recommended. Children in organized groups are not covered.
- Care partners accompanying a visitor with a disability.
- Active US military: one free admission plus up to five family tickets with valid ID, collected at the Ticketing Desk.
- Museums for All: SNAP or WIC recipients and up to four guests, with an EBT or WIC card and photo ID.
- ICOM and AAM members: two free admissions with a current card and photo ID.
Several other free routes are limited to New Yorkers, such as listed New York college students and staff, Cool Culture Family Pass holders and New York State arts teachers.
UNIQLO Friday Nights: who actually qualifies
MoMA stays open to 20:30 on Fridays, and from 17:30 to 20:30 admission is free for New York State residents. The museum says free tickets must be reserved in advance, are subject to availability, and need proof of residency. If you live elsewhere, a Friday evening visit still costs the normal price, but the late opening gives you three extra hours.
Discount passes and combined tickets
MoMA lists four ways to pay less than buying a single adult ticket, all sold through third parties:
- RockMoMA with Top of the Rock, which MoMA says saves $10.
- New York C3 by CityPASS: any three of 11 attractions within nine days; reserve your MoMA date and time in the CityPASS app.
- New York Pass and Go City New York Explorer Pass, redeemed by each pass's own instructions.
These are worth it only if you were going to pay for the other attractions anyway. Our observation deck comparison covers Top of the Rock and its rivals.

Booking, hours and closed days
MoMA's FAQ says buying online is required to guarantee entry; a limited number of walk-up tickets are sold first come, first served at the ticketing desk. There may be a line in the morning and on rainy days.
The museum opens daily 10:30–17:30, and until 20:30 on Fridays. Galleries close about 15 minutes before the museum. Members have select galleries to themselves from 9:30 to 10:30 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. MoMA is open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas; in 2026 those are Thursday 26 November and Friday 25 December. Our New York holiday closures guide covers other museums and transit on those days.
Bags, food and photos
- All backpacks must be left in the checkroom before you enter the galleries, and bags are inspected on arrival.
- Outside food and drink are not allowed.
- Personal photography and video are allowed unless signs say otherwise; flash, tripods and extension poles are not.
- Strollers are welcome but are not allowed on escalators, and some galleries may limit them.

Getting to MoMA by subway
The main entrance is on 53rd Street near Sixth Avenue. The accessibility page names the nearest stations as 5 Av/53 St (E, M) and 7 Av (B, D, E), but notes that neither is wheelchair accessible or has elevators.
Subway fares and tapping in with a contactless card are covered in our OMNY guide.
MoMA PS1: free, but a different building
MoMA PS1 is at 22-25 Jackson Avenue in Long Island City, Queens. A MoMA press release announced free admission for all visitors from 1 January 2026, funded by Sonya Yu, "for the next three years". The PS1 site has a reserve button but does not say a reservation is required.
PS1 keeps different hours from MoMA: open 12:00–18:00, from 10:00 on Saturday, and closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. The PS1 site says MoMA's Midtown building is two stops away on the E or F train. If you only have a Tuesday or Wednesday, you cannot combine the two on one day.
