The route in one day

Mont-Saint-Michel is about 9 km from the nearest station, Pontorson, so every public-transport trip from Paris ends with a bus. The combination with the most departures is train to Rennes plus the Keolis Armor bus. Keolis says each of its trips connects with TGVs to and from Paris, so a same-day return is possible (Keolis Armor, checked 12 October 2026).

Keolis bus timetable and fares

The Rennes – Mont Saint-Michel timetable runs every day, holidays included, from 30 March to 1 November 2026:

Rennes bus station Mont-Saint-Michel (Le Verger) Return from the Mont Rennes bus station
8:45 10:00 11:35 12:50
10:45 12:00 16:45 18:00
13:00 14:15 18:00 19:15

On the price page, a one-way ticket costs from €15 and a return from €25; under-26s pay from €12 one way or €20 return; under-4s travel free. Prices are "from", so book early. Keolis strongly recommends booking, says seats are subject to availability, allows changes up to 24 hours before departure for €2.50 per ticket, and may ask for proof of age on a reduced fare.

A combined ticket at the return price covers Rennes → Mont-Saint-Michel → Saint-Malo, or the reverse, if you want to end the day on the coast instead.

Pontorson: the other rail option

Pontorson is the closest station. SNCF Connect lists 5 trains a day from Paris-Montparnasse, fastest 2h28 and average 3h13, from €16, some direct and others changing at Rennes or Granville. The tourist office says buses run from Pontorson station to the Mont all year, but it does not name the operator or give fares on that page; it links the timetables instead. Use Pontorson if its train times suit you better, after checking the bus connection.

Abbey tickets and hours

The abbey is run by the Centre des monuments nationaux. Its practical information page gives these terms (checked 12 October 2026):

Item Detail
Price, 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 €13
Price, 1 April to 30 September 2026 €16
Hours, 1 September to 30 April 9:30–18:00
Hours, 1 May to 31 August 9:00–19:00
Last entry 1 hour before closing
Closed 1 January, 1 May, 25 December

The official ticket shop sells tickets up to one month ahead, each valid only for the time slot you choose. It also sells English guided tours (45 minutes) and a 2-hour conference tour into closed areas, with prices shown at booking.

Free entry covers under-18s with their family, 18 to 25-year-olds who are EU citizens or regular non-European residents of France, holders of a disability inclusion card plus one companion, and everyone on the first Sunday of January, February, March, November and December and on European Heritage Days. Minors must be with an adult.

From the shuttle to the abbey

The abbey sits at the top of the village, and the abbey page warns of "the large number of steps". It estimates 45 minutes to an hour from the car parks to the abbey entrance, depending on crowds. Book a slot at least an hour after your bus arrives: with the 10:00 arrival, an 11:00 to 11:30 slot leaves time for the shuttle, the climb and the security check.

Shuttle and tides

The tourist office says Le Passeur runs at least from 7:30 to 23:00 and can be requested by phone outside those hours; its FAQ gives a frequency of about every 15 minutes and a 40-minute walk from the car park, 2.5 km from the entrance.

At high tide, water covers the esplanade between the footbridge and the village entrance, and the Mont becomes an island for about an hour. There are no boats; the FAQ says to wait about an hour for the water to go down. If a big tide falls around your last bus, be on the mainland side early.

Total time and cost

For one adult on the 8:45 bus out and the 16:45 bus back:

Item Cost
Train Paris → Rennes and back From €20 (from €10 each way)
Keolis bus, return From €25
Le Passeur shuttle Free
Abbey, October to March €13
Total From €58

SNCF's sample fares on the Rennes page run up to €55 one way, so the same day can cost about €148 on dearer trains. A 22-year-old EU citizen pays from €20 for the bus and nothing for the abbey. On time, you get about 6h45 at the Mont between the 10:00 arrival and the 16:45 departure, and the full day from Paris and back runs to roughly 13 to 14 hours.

Organised coach tours from Paris package the same day with fixed timings; compare their price with this total and check whether the abbey ticket is included. Our Paris day trips comparison weighs Mont-Saint-Michel against shorter options such as Versailles and Giverny.

The abbey refuses suitcases and has no storage, so if you check out of a Paris hotel that morning, see luggage storage near the Paris stations first.
