Which market is open when
The two organisers publish different hours, and the gap matters most on weekday evenings and over Christmas. These are the hours from the Vörösmarty opening-hours page and the Advent Bazilika opening-hours page, both checked on 30 October 2026.
| Date (2026) | Vörösmarty tér | Advent Bazilika |
|---|---|---|
| Mon–Thu, 13 Nov–23 Dec | 11:00–21:00 | 11:00–22:00 |
| Fri–Sat | 11:00–22:00 | 11:00–23:00 |
| Sunday | 11:00–21:00 | 11:00–22:00 |
| 24 December | 10:00–14:00 | 11:00–15:00 |
| 25–26 December | 12:00–18:00 | 11:00–20:00 |
| 27–28 December | Normal hours; 28 Dec is the craft stalls' last day | Normal hours |
| 29–30 December | 11:00–21:00 | Normal hours |
| 31 December | 11:00–03:00 | 11:00–03:00 |
| 1 January 2027 | Not listed | 11:00–18:00 |
The Basilica market's English page prints the New Year's Eve closing as "3 AM", and the Hungarian version confirms it as 03:00, so it runs past midnight into 1 January. Vörösmarty also lists 11:00 to 3 a.m. for 31 December.
24 December: a short day for everything
Christmas Eve is the day plans go wrong. Both markets close in the early afternoon, and the only window when both are open is 11:00–14:00.
Shops follow a legal limit too. Section 6(3) of Hungary's Trade Act says shops may stay open on 24 December only until 14:00. The exceptions are restaurants and other hospitality venues, accommodation, flower shops, sweet shops and petrol stations, plus shops inside public railway and bus stations and airports. The Act does not mention Christmas markets; their hours above come from the organisers.
What this means for a visitor on 24 December:
- Food and gifts: buy anything you need from a supermarket or the markets before 14:00. A Christmas Eve dinner reservation is safer than relying on finding food late, because the law allows restaurants to open but does not oblige them to.
- Market visit: go in the late morning. If you can only manage one, the Basilica market stays open an hour longer, until 15:00.
- Arriving that afternoon: treat the markets as closed and plan for 25 December instead.

25 and 26 December
Both markets reopen on Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day, with shorter hours than usual. The Basilica market is the better bet for an evening visit, at 11:00–20:00 against Vörösmarty's 12:00–18:00. At Vörösmarty, the little railway ride starts later on 26 December, at 14:00.
Between Christmas and New Year
The Vörösmarty organiser says its season lasts "until the dawn of the New Year", but the craft exhibitors and the railway ride are there for the last time on 28 December. From 29 December, expect a smaller Vörösmarty market without its handicraft stalls. If buying crafts is the point of your visit, go by 28 December or use the Basilica market, which keeps normal hours until New Year's Eve and opens 11:00–18:00 on 1 January 2027.
The two markets compared
Vörösmarty tér is the older-style market. The organiser's programmes page calls the children's train one of the square's main attractions and says it is free. That page carries a 2022 copyright and lists no 2026 programme, so check on arrival that the free ride still applies. The railway runs on weekdays from 14:00 to 20:00 and at weekends until 20:00; the weekend start on the hours page is printed as "11p.m.", evidently meant as 11:00.
The Advent Bazilika fills Szent István tér in front of St Stephen's Basilica. Its opening-hours page describes a giant Christmas tree and nearly a hundred local craft exhibitors for 2026, and says the market has been voted Europe's Most Beautiful Christmas Market four times. Entry is free for everyone, according to the market rules.
The Basilica market's programmes page still showed the 2025 season on 30 October 2026. Last year it listed a light show on the Basilica façade every afternoon from 17:30, with concerts on some days from 17:00. Treat those times as last season's pattern until the 2026 programme is published.

Rules at the Basilica market
The Advent Bazilika rules ban cycling inside the market, and segways and scooters are barred except for staff and people with a permit from security. Fireworks and anything that could threaten public safety are prohibited, CCTV is in use, and parts of the market may close if needed. The Vörösmarty organiser's rules page showed only a heading and contact details on 30 October 2026, so we could not check its house rules.
Planning around the dates
The Vörösmarty fair ran from 14 November to 31 December in 2025, according to the Hungarian Tourism Agency's event page. This year both markets start a day earlier, on Friday 13 November 2026, which gives a full first weekend.
If you are combining Budapest with Vienna, our Budapest to Vienna train guide covers the trip, and our Vienna Christmas markets guide has the dates at the other end. Hotels in Budapest add the district tourist tax to the room bill, which our Budapest tourist tax guide explains.
