Getting up the hill
On foot from the river
Feel Florence's San Niccolò itinerary gives two ways up from the Oltrarno:
- The ramps: from Piazza Poggi, behind the San Niccolò tower, climb the monumental 19th-century ramps straight to Piazzale Michelangelo. Their grottoes and water features are lit at night.
- Via del Monte alle Croci: walk along via di San Niccolò to the Porta di San Miniato, a surviving city gate, then climb via del Monte alle Croci to the square; San Miniato is "a little further up".
Neither route has an official distance or time. Both are steep, and the second suits going on to San Miniato first.
By bus 12 or 13
Autolinee Toscane runs two urban lines that loop around the hill in opposite directions, according to its line pages for line 12 and line 13:
| Line | Way up | Top stop | Way down |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13 | From the station stops (Orti Oricellari, Abside SMN, Piazza Adua) via Campo di Marte and viale Michelangiolo | Piazzale il David | Via viale Galileo, Porta Romana and San Frediano back to the station |
| 12 | From Il Prato via Porta Romana and viale Galileo | Piazzale San Miniato | Via viale Michelangiolo and Campo di Marte to Stazione Scalette |
The abbey's own directions recommend bus 12 from Santa Maria Novella, although line 12's uphill stop list starts at Il Prato rather than at a station stop; from the station itself, line 13 is the direct one. Line 12's top stop, Piazzale San Miniato, is the closest to the church, and line 12's winter timetable, valid from 2 November 2026, gives about 7 minutes from Porta Romana. Buses run roughly every 5–10 minutes in the weekday morning peak, every 10–25 minutes during the day on Sundays, and only every 30–60 minutes in the evening. Line 12 also carries a diversion notice in Florence from 20 August to 31 December 2026, so check the line page for the current route.
A single urban ticket costs €2.00 and is valid for 90 minutes (GEST tickets), or €3.00 if you buy it from the driver (AT fares). With Tap&Tap you pay the same price by tapping a contactless card or phone, once every time you board, one card per passenger. Our Florence bus and tram tickets guide explains the options in detail.
San Miniato al Monte: hours, services and the chant
From the abbey's hours and information page (last modified March 2025):
| Morning | Afternoon | |
|---|---|---|
| Monday–Saturday | 9:30–13:00 | 15:30–19:00 |
| Sunday | 8:15–13:00 | 15:30–19:00 |
- Admission: free, with no booking for individuals or groups.
- Mass: weekdays at 18:00 in Latin with Gregorian chant; Sundays and holidays at 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 and 17:30, the last in Latin with Gregorian chant.
- Vespers: every afternoon at 18:30, sung by the monastic community in Latin and Gregorian chant.
- During services the basilica cannot be visited, so on weekdays your sightseeing window in the afternoon is 15:30–18:00, and on Sundays 15:30–17:30.
The church is closed between 13:00 and 15:30, so a morning walk that reaches the top around 13:00 finds the doors shut.

Timing the visit around sunset
Sunset times below come from the U.S. Naval Observatory's tables for Florence, which are given in standard time (UTC+1); USNO says to add one hour while daylight saving time is in use.
| Date | Sunset (standard time) | Church open to visitors at sunset? |
|---|---|---|
| 15 November 2026 | 16:49 | Yes |
| 15 December 2026 | 16:38 | Yes |
| 15 January 2027 | 17:03 | Yes |
| 15 February 2027 | 17:44 | Yes on weekdays (until 18:00) |
| 15 March 2027 | 18:21 | No: weekday Mass starts at 18:00 |
From the 2027 table, mid-June sunset is 19:59 in standard time, about 21:00 on summer clocks, long after the basilica's 19:00 closing.
Winter plan (November–February): arrive at San Miniato at 15:30 when it reopens, spend about an hour inside, walk down to Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset at around 16:40–17:00, and either stay for the city lights or walk back up for Vespers at 18:30.
Spring and summer plan: see the church in the afternoon, then return to the square for sunset in the evening. On summer evenings, check the last bus before you settle in.
