The fast train from Fiumicino serves exactly one station, and the cheaper train does not serve it at all. Aeroporti di Roma gives the Leonardo Express a single destination, Roma Termini, reached in 32 minutes (ADR, Fiumicino Airport train, checked 15 September 2026), while the FL1 regional trains that cost six euros less run to a different set of stations altogether. Ciampino changes the question again, because it has no platform of its own. At both airports the taxi fare is set by the municipality rather than the meter, which is why you should ignore anyone offering you a ride inside the terminal.

Choosing by station, not by speed

The Rome station you actually need, not the journey time, decides which Fiumicino train to buy. The Leonardo Express covers the distance in 32 minutes with departures every 15 minutes, and it is a shuttle with no intermediate stops (Trenitalia, Leonardo express, checked 15 September 2026). If your accommodation is near Termini, or you are connecting onward to a Frecciarossa there, it is the direct answer and the extra six euros buys you a single seated leg with no changes.

If you are staying in Trastevere, Testaccio, San Lorenzo or anywhere nearer the eastern or southern ring of the centre, the calculation flips. Trenitalia's service notices for the Orte–Roma–Fiumicino Aeroporto line name Roma Ostiense, Roma Tuscolana and Roma Tiburtina as FL1 calling points (Trenitalia, Orte–Roma–Fiumicino service notice, checked 15 September 2026), and neither ADR nor Trenitalia lists Roma Termini among them. Do not board an FL1 train expecting to be dropped at Termini.

Neither Rome airport has a metro station. ADR's transport pages list train, bus, taxi, car hire, car sharing and private transfer, and no metro line among them (ADR, Fiumicino Airport Transport, checked 15 September 2026). Any metro leg is something you add after you reach a city station.

Fiumicino by train

Fiumicino's railway station sits inside the airport area, close to the arrival and departure terminals, which is why the train works with luggage in a way an airport bus stop often does not (ADR, Fiumicino Airport train, checked 15 September 2026). Trenitalia states that luggage, including large-sized luggage, carries no surcharge on the Leonardo Express. The table below compares the two rail products and the cheapest coach on the attributes that change your decision.

Option Where it puts you Single fare
Leonardo Express Roma Termini, non-stop, 32 minutes EUR 14.00
FL1 regional Roma Ostiense, Tuscolana, Tiburtina EUR 8.00
Terravision coach Roma Termini or Vatican, Via Crescenzio From EUR 4.00

FL1 frequency is the one thing that differs by day of the week. ADR gives departures every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays (ADR, Fiumicino Airport train, checked 15 September 2026), and Trenitalia quotes 48 minutes from the airport to Roma Tiburtina (Trenitalia, Connections to and from Rome Fiumicino Airport, checked 15 September 2026). A Sunday evening landing can therefore mean a half-hour wait on the regional platform for the sake of six euros.

Paper tickets must be validated before you board and are then valid for 90 minutes; digital tickets are tied to the specific train, and at Fiumicino Aeroporto validation happens at the turnstiles before you reach the platforms (Tariffa 1/TER, checked 15 September 2026). Metrebus integrated city tickets are explicitly not valid on the Leonardo Express.

Fiumicino by bus

The airport buses are cheaper than the train and slower than it, and they all end up in the same few places. ADR lists Cotral, Rome Airport Bus (Schiaffini), SIT Bus Shuttle, T.A.M. Bus and Terravision as the operators serving Rome, with interregional coaches leaving from the bus hub at Terminal 3 Arrivals, stalls 20 to 26, next to exit 6; Terravision uses stall 18, SIT stall 16, T.A.M. stall 17 and Rome Airport Bus stall 19 (ADR, Autobus Fiumicino, checked 15 September 2026).

Terravision publishes fares from EUR 4.00 one way and EUR 8.00 return, with roughly 45 minutes to Roma Termini and about 40 minutes to the Vatican stop on Via Crescenzio, and states there is no limit on the number or weight of luggage items you can carry if space allows (Terravision, Bus Fiumicino Airport – Rome, checked 15 September 2026). That Vatican stop is the real reason to choose a coach over the train: no rail service from the airport goes anywhere near it.

Ciampino has no station

Ciampino airport has no railway station of its own, and every rail option from it starts with a short bus. ADR states that a bus connection leaves every 20 minutes from the square opposite the airport and takes passengers to Ciampino Station (ADR, Train - Ciampino, checked 15 September 2026). Trenitalia packages that leg with the onward train as the Ciampino Airlink, a combined bus-and-train ticket priced at EUR 2.70 per person, with the bus running the 10 minutes to Ciampino station with no intermediate stops (Trenitalia, Ciampino Airlink, checked 15 September 2026). Luggage of any size travels free on it.

At EUR 2.70 the Airlink is the cheapest advertised way from Ciampino into central Rome, and it is also the least advertised. The direct coaches are more visible at arrivals. The table below sets out what each of the three main bus answers actually gives you.

Option Where it takes you Fare
Ciampino Airlink Ciampino station, then train to Roma Termini EUR 2.70
Terravision coach Roma Termini direct, 40-45 minutes From EUR 6.00
ATAC line 520 or 720 Cinecittà and Subaugusta, or Laurentina EUR 1.50

The ATAC row is the one most guides leave out. ATAC's own BIT page confirms that the EUR 1.50 integrated time ticket, valid 100 minutes from first validation, is valid on the 520 and 720 bus lines connecting Rome to Ciampino Airport (ATAC, BIT, checked 15 September 2026), and ADR describes the 720 as running to Roma Laurentina and the 520 to Roma Cinecittà and Subaugusta (ADR, Bus - Ciampino, checked 15 September 2026). Those are metro interchanges, not the centre, so this is a route for light luggage and a little patience.

Terravision's Ciampino service is priced from EUR 6.00 one way and EUR 12.00 return, direct to Roma Termini in 40 to 45 minutes (Terravision, Bus Ciampino Airport – Rome, checked 15 September 2026). SIT and Rome Airport Bus (Schiaffini) run comparable Termini services, but ADR publishes no fares for them and points you to each company's own site.

The fixed taxi fares

A licensed taxi from either Rome airport charges a predetermined fare rather than running the meter, and that fare already includes every supplement. Aeroporti di Roma publishes EUR 55.00 from Fiumicino to Roma Centro inside the Aurelian Walls, stating the fares are set by the competent municipality and can change without notice (ADR, Taxi Fiumicino, checked 15 September 2026). From Ciampino the equivalent figure is EUR 40.00 (ADR, Taxi - Ciampino, checked 15 September 2026). Neither page states a passenger limit for the fixed fare.

The published Fiumicino list is longer than the one number most travellers know, and the differences matter if your hotel is outside the walls.

Fiumicino fixed route Fare
Roma Centro, inside the Aurelian Walls EUR 55.00
Stazione Tiburtina EUR 60.00
Stazione Ostiense EUR 50.00
Ciampino Airport EUR 55.00
Civitavecchia Porto EUR 130.00

Where no predetermined fare is published, there is still a ceiling. ADR states that for journeys to or from Fiumicino beginning or ending inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare without a fixed fare, the amount cannot exceed EUR 80.00, and that a run between the airport and the Comune di Fiumicino itself carries a minimum fare of EUR 25.00 (ADR, Taxi Fiumicino, checked 15 September 2026). Ciampino's page lists EUR 40.00 to Stazione Ostiense and to Stazione Tiburtina alongside the city-centre fare.

Late arrivals and the night gap

The Leonardo Express stops running before midnight, and that is the gap most late arrivals fall into. Trenitalia's published timetable, valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026, gives a first departure from Roma Termini at 04:50 and a last at 23:05, with the first from Fiumicino Aeroporto at 05:38 and the last at 23:23 (Trenitalia, Orari Leonardo Express, checked 15 September 2026). A flight landing at 23:00 will not make that train once you have cleared baggage reclaim.

Cotral covers the overnight hours at Fiumicino with a dedicated product. Its Air Terminal ticket costs EUR 5.00 bought through the app or a ticket office and EUR 7.00 bought on board, and Cotral states it allows travel on the night services between Termini and Tiburtina stations and Fiumicino Airport (Cotral, All Travel Titles, checked 15 September 2026). ADR separately confirms night buses run from Fiumicino towards Roma Termini with departures in the evening and after midnight (ADR, Autobus Fiumicino, checked 15 September 2026).

Do not assume the Cotral night ticket works like a city ticket. ATAC states that the BIT is not valid on the Cotral special connection between Roma Tiburtina or Termini and Fiumicino Airport, nor on the Trenitalia no-stop Termini–Fiumicino service (ATAC, BIT, checked 15 September 2026). Airport links in Rome sit outside the integrated city fare in both directions.

Before you leave arrivals

Decide your station before you land, because that is the only input that changes the answer. Termini means the Leonardo Express or a direct coach; Ostiense, Tuscolana or Tiburtina means the EUR 8.00 FL1 ticket; anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls with heavy bags at an awkward hour means the fixed-fare taxi from the marked rank. At Ciampino the same logic reduces to a single question of whether you want the EUR 2.70 Airlink, a direct coach, or the EUR 40.00 taxi.

Two things this guide does not cover. It gives no live timetable for the FL1, the airport coaches or the Ciampino Airlink, because engineering works on the Orte–Fiumicino line move those and only the operators' own pages are current. And it does not price private transfers, NCC cars or ride-hailing, which ADR lists as separate services with their own pickup points rather than as part of the taxi rank. Confirm any fare on the operator's page first, since ADR states plainly that the municipal taxi tariffs can change without notice.
