The fast Fiumicino train serves only Termini, the cheap one skips Termini, and neither airport has a metro line (ADR, Fiumicino Airport Transport, checked 3 October 2026). After about 23:30 at Fiumicino and after midnight at Ciampino, the choice narrows to a night bus or a taxi.

How do I get from Fiumicino to Rome by train?
The station is inside the airport area, close to the terminals, and signposted (ADR, Fiumicino Airport train, checked 3 October 2026). Two different services leave from it.
The Leonardo Express is non-stop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes at busy times and every 30 minutes otherwise, arriving at dedicated platforms 23 and 24 (Trenitalia, Leonardo Express timetable, valid 14 June to 12 December 2026, checked 3 October 2026). A single costs EUR 14.00, and large luggage carries no surcharge (Trenitalia, Leonardo express, checked 3 October 2026).
FL1 regional trains cost EUR 8.00 to any station in Rome's "Zona Anello" (Trenitalia, Tariffa 1/TER Fiumicino Aeroporto, valid from 28 October 2024, checked 3 October 2026). They run every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on Sundays and holidays, reaching Roma Tiburtina in 48 minutes (Trenitalia, Connections to and from Rome Fiumicino Airport, checked 3 October 2026). City tickets do not work on the airport train. Trenitalia's tariff excludes integrated Metrebus tickets from the Leonardo Express, and ATAC states its BIT is not valid on the non-stop Termini-Fiumicino service (ATAC, BIT, checked 3 October 2026). Fiumicino by coach
Coaches are cheaper than the train but share the road with city traffic. ADR lists Terravision at stall 18, SIT Bus Shuttle at stall 16, T.A.M. at stall 17 and Rome Airport Bus (Schiaffini) at stall 19, with interregional coaches at stalls 20 to 26 next to exit 6 of Terminal 3 Arrivals (ADR, Autobus Fiumicino, checked 3 October 2026).
Terravision publishes fares from EUR 4.00 one way to Roma Termini (about 45 minutes) and from EUR 6.00 to its Vatican stop on Via Crescenzio (about 40 minutes), with no limit on luggage if space allows (Terravision, Fiumicino - Rome, checked 3 October 2026). The Vatican stop is the main reason to choose a coach: no airport train goes near it.
How do I get from Ciampino airport to central Rome?
Ciampino has no railway station, so every public option starts with a bus from the stops opposite International Departures (ADR, Bus - Ciampino, checked 3 October 2026).

The Ciampino Airlink is a single EUR 2.70 bus-and-train ticket; the bus takes about 10 minutes to Ciampino station and luggage of any size is free (Trenitalia, Ciampino Airlink, checked 3 October 2026). ADR says the bus leaves every 20 minutes from the square opposite the airport (ADR, Train - Ciampino, checked 3 October 2026).
Terravision's direct coach starts from EUR 6.50 one way and runs roughly every 40 minutes (Terravision, Ciampino - Rome, checked 3 October 2026); SIT and Rome Airport Bus also serve Termini. ATAC's 520 and 720 accept the ordinary EUR 1.50 BIT (ATAC, BIT), but they end at metro stations outside the centre, so they suit light luggage only.
How much is a taxi from Rome's airports?

If your address is outside the walls, the meter runs, but ADR states a trip from Fiumicino to an address inside the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road cannot cost more than EUR 80.00, with a EUR 35.00 minimum for destinations without a fixed fare. Check whether your hotel is inside the Aurelian Walls before you agree the fare.
Arriving late at night
At Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express timetable valid to 12 December 2026 shows a daily last departure at 23:23, plus later trains at 23:53 (not on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 18 November) and 00:23 (not on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 19 November). The first train from the airport is at 05:38 (Trenitalia timetable, checked 3 October 2026). ADR's train page quotes a slightly different last time, so check the Trenitalia app on the day.
After the trains stop, Cotral runs night buses between Fiumicino and Roma Termini and Tiburtina. Its Air Terminal ticket costs EUR 5.00 in the app or at a ticket office and EUR 7.00 on board (Cotral, All Travel Titles, checked 3 October 2026). ADR confirms night departures towards Termini in the evening and after midnight (ADR, Autobus Fiumicino).
