Admission fees

The temple's own visit page lists these prices (checked 29 October 2026):

Visitor Individual Group of 25+
Adult ¥600 ¥550
Junior and senior high school ¥400 ¥350
Primary school ¥300 ¥250

Holders of a Japanese disability or developmental-disability handbook pay half price, and so does one companion. The page does not mention preschool children or foreign disability documents; ask at the ticket window.

There is no online ticket or time slot. Two adults with a 10-year-old pay ¥1,500 at the gate.

Opening hours by season

The visit page sets two seasons:

  • 1 April to 15 November: 8:30–17:00, last entry 16:30.
  • 16 November to 31 March: 9:00–16:00, last entry 15:30.

The switch on 16 November catches out late-autumn visitors: the hall opens half an hour later and closes an hour earlier from that date. JR Central's Souda Kyoto page gives the same hours.

The visit page does not list any closing days, and neither does JR Central's page. It also gives no special year-end or New Year hours. If you are going on a public holiday or over New Year, check with the temple by phone (075-561-0467).

November evening viewing

Kyoto's official night-tourism listing, dated 24 September 2026, includes a Sanjusangendo night viewing on 22–24 November 2026, 17:00–19:00 (last entry 18:30), with a ¥2,000 special ticket sold at the gate from about 16:30 and no advance booking. The entry is marked "on hold", which the page does not explain. The same event ran on the same three dates in 2025, according to Kyoto Sightseeing Navi. Treat 2026 as unconfirmed until the temple announces it. Other autumn evening openings are in our Kyoto autumn light-ups guide.

Inside the hall: shoes and photography

You take off your shoes before entering the main hall; the visit page says shoe lockers are provided at the entrance. Wear socks you are happy to walk in.

The temple's visit page does not publish a photography rule, and its other pages could not be read when this guide was checked. Follow the signs at the hall entrance and staff instructions on the day rather than assuming photos are allowed. The grounds, the South Gate and the Taiko-bei wall, which the visit page lists as sights, are outdoors.

Kyoto, Japan

Getting there

Sanjusangendo is in eastern Kyoto, south of Shichijo-dori. The bus stop beside it is named after it and the neighbouring museum: Hakubutsukan Sanjusangendo-mae.

By city bus from Kyoto Station

The visit page names three city bus routes from Kyoto Station, all about 10 minutes. Get off at Hakubutsukan Sanjusangendo-mae, which JR Central's page describes as right by the temple:

  • Route 206: on the Kyoto City Transportation Bureau's route 206 stop list, buses leaving Kyoto Station are signed for Sanjusangendo, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion and Kitaoji Bus Terminal.
  • Route 208: on the route 208 stop list, buses leaving Kyoto Station are signed for the museum, Sanjusangendo, Sennyu-ji and Tofuku-ji.
  • Route 100: listed by the temple; check its stop on the day.

Fares, day passes and paying by IC card are in our Kyoto bus and subway fares guide.

By Keihan train

Take the Keihan Main Line to Shichijo Station, leave by Exit 2 and walk about 7 minutes east. Kyoto Sightseeing Navi's Higashiyama access page recommends this from the Gion and Shijo area: board at Gion-Shijo towards Osaka; express trains also stop at Shichijo. The same page warns that route 206 can be crowded with passengers heading for Kiyomizu-dera and Gion.

On foot

From Kyoto Station the walk is about 18 minutes: north up Karasuma-dori and east along Shichijo-dori across the Kamo River.

How long to allow and what to pair it with

The temple publishes no typical visit length. As a planning suggestion, allow 45 minutes to an hour for the hall and grounds, plus the shoe lockers and ticket queue.

Route 206 buses from Kyoto Station are signed for Kiyomizu-dera after Sanjusangendo, so a morning at Sanjusangendo followed by Kiyomizu-dera and the Higashiyama lanes works well. If buses are packed, Keihan Shichijo Station is the easier way on; our Fushimi Inari guide covers the train connections south to the shrine.
