Decisions to make before you travel
- How do you get in? From Kansai Airport, the Haruka limited express takes about 78 minutes and costs ¥2,200 per adult with JR-WEST's one-way ticket for foreign tourists; the limousine bus costs ¥2,800 and keeps running after the last Haruka at 22:16. From Tokyo, the Nozomi takes about 130 minutes, ¥13,970 for a reserved seat booked on smartEX (operator pages, checked 19 October 2026).
- Pass or pay as you go? A city bus ride in the flat-fare zone is ¥230 and the subway ¥220 to ¥360. The bus-only day pass was withdrawn in 2023; the Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass at ¥1,100 is what remains. Credit and debit cards cannot be used on city buses or the subway, so carry an IC card such as ICOCA or Suica, or cash.
- What needs a booking? Nijo Castle's Honmaru-goten Palace sells timed web reservations 30 days ahead. Fushimi Inari, the Arashiyama bamboo path and Nara Park are free to walk.
- Got a big suitcase on the Shinkansen? Bags of 160–250 cm in total need a reserved seat with an oversized baggage area, or you pay ¥1,000 on board.
- What does the hotel add? Since 1 March 2026, Kyoto's accommodation tax runs from ¥200 to ¥10,000 per person per night, depending on the room-only price.

What to recheck before you go
