How far is Queen Alia Airport from Amman?

Visit Jordan, the Jordan Tourism Board site, puts Queen Alia International Airport 35 km south of Amman. It gives about 50 minutes to the historic downtown and 30 to 45 minutes by taxi. Traffic in west Amman at rush hour decides where in that range you land.

Most hotels in west Amman are near the airport road and the numbered circles. Downtown (Al-Balad) and Jabal Amman are further in. The bus stops at 7th Circle and in the north at Tabarbour. It is therefore most useful if you are staying near those stops or can finish with a short taxi ride.

Which option should you take?

The best option depends on your group size, the hour you land, and how far your hotel is from 7th Circle.

Option Cost Time Best when
Airport Express to 7th Circle JOD 3.40 each About 30–45 min drive plus up to 30 min wait (hourly at night) Solo or two people, hotel near 7th Circle or west Amman
Airport Express to North Station JOD 3.40 each Longer: 7th Circle comes first Heading north, or onward to Jerash or Irbid
Airport Express + local taxi JOD 3.40 each plus a short metered ride Adds a transfer at 7th Circle Solo traveller going downtown on a budget
Airport taxi Zone fare from the booth list About 30–45 min Groups of 3–4, heavy bags, late night, families

Visit Jordan's tourist page mentions a taxi fare of "about 15 JDs". The same page gives an older bus fare and terminus, so treat that taxi figure as a rough guide only. The airport taxi service says its prices are official and set by the Ministry of Transport, according to the destination zone. Ask the booth for your zone price before you get in.

How the Airport Express bus works

Sariyah's Airport Express page lists three loading points: the arrivals station at Queen Alia, 7th Circle, and the North Station (North Complex) at Tabarbour. You can buy tickets at Sariyah's airport office or the North Station office, or pay the driver. The fare is JOD 3.40 a passenger. Sariyah also says Visa payment is available.

According to the published departure schedule from the airport:

  • Morning: departures at 06:00, 07:00 and 08:00.
  • Daytime: every 30 minutes from 08:30 until the early evening.
  • Evening and night: hourly from 19:00 through 02:00, then 03:00, 04:00 and 05:00.

Sariyah notes that Friday departures run hourly all day. On a Friday, allow up to an hour's wait.

The LTRC publishes regulated fare lists for Jordan's public transport lines. The Sariyah page is still the only place that shows this route's current timetable. Check it on the day you fly.

Taking the airport taxi

The Queen Alia Airport Taxi service calls itself the official and exclusive licensed transport service inside the airport. You book at its indoor booth in the arrivals hall or its outdoor booth at Exit 1. It accepts cash in any currency, or Visa and Mastercard. The fare comes from the approved list for your destination zone, so you are not negotiating and there is no meter running in traffic.

This guide could not open the current zone price list on an official page. Ask the booth for the fare to your exact neighbourhood and check it before loading the bags. This guide did not verify airport pickup rules for ride-hailing apps. If you want a pre-booked car, a hotel pick-up arranged directly with your hotel is the option you can confirm in writing before you fly.

Worked examples: one traveller and a group of four

One traveller, landing at 14:00 on a weekday, hotel near 7th Circle. The Airport Express is the clear choice. A bus leaves every 30 minutes at that hour, the fare is JOD 3.40, and 7th Circle is one of its two stops. If the hotel is a few kilometres beyond 7th Circle, a short local taxi from there is the usual way to finish the trip.

Four adults with four large cases, landing at 23:30, staying downtown. On the bus that is JOD 13.60 for four tickets. You would then wait for the midnight or 01:00 departure, and still need a taxi from 7th Circle into downtown with all the luggage. One airport taxi costs a single zone fare for the whole group, goes straight to the door and leaves as soon as the bags are in. Visit Jordan's rough figure is about JOD 15, but confirm at the booth. For a group of three or four at night, the taxi costs about the same as the bus and saves an hour or more.

Switch point: for one or two people going to 7th Circle or the North Station, take the bus at any hour. For three or more people going anywhere else, the taxi's single fare usually wins.
