Which option should you take from JKIA?

The answer depends on three things: whether you have already booked a car, how much luggage you have, and what time you land. The official material from the airport authority, the highways authority and the railway gives rules and routes rather than a fare table, so the cost column below describes how you are charged, not a guaranteed price.

Option How you pay Road time depends on Best when
Hotel or tour-operator transfer Price fixed in your booking, per vehicle Traffic and route chosen Night arrivals, first visits, safari starts
Licensed taxi from an arrivals desk Negotiated per vehicle before departure Traffic, plus Expressway or not No booking, 1 to 4 people with bags
Ride-hailing app Quoted in the app Traffic, plus Expressway or not You have data and a working app on landing
Bus or matatu Per seat, cash or mobile money Stops and traffic on Mombasa Road Light luggage, daytime, tight budget
Rail Not available to the terminals Not applicable Not an option today

Is there a train from JKIA to the CBD?

Not to the terminals. Kenya Railways' commuter rail page lists JKIA among the destinations of its Phase 1 network and describes a new 6.5 km line to the airport as planned, while naming Syokimau, Makadara and Imara Daima as the operational stations.

In March 2021 Kenya Railways announced a JKIA Express service combining a train from Nairobi Central Station to Embakasi Village with a bus into the airport, dropping at the cargo area and JKIA Central Square, operating 05:45 to 21:00. We could not confirm on any current Kenya Railways page that this service still runs, so do not plan an arrival around it.

The Madaraka Express (SGR) is also not an airport link. Its Nairobi terminus is at Syokimau, and Kenya Railways' fares page sells it as an intercity service to Mombasa rather than a transfer.

Taxis: how JKIA's rules work

Kenya Airports Authority licenses taxi and transfer companies and says they must wait at designated ranks. Several companies have service desks in the international and domestic arrivals halls. Some licensed taxis are yellow, but KAA notes that not all are, so colour alone tells you little.

Four rules from the same page shape what you do:

  1. The price is agreed at the start. KAA says the fare is negotiated between you and the driver before the trip, and that drivers tend to overcharge visitors, so know an estimate before you land.
  2. Fares are per vehicle, not per person. A group pays one fare.
  3. Soliciting rides at the airport is illegal. Ignore anyone offering transport inside the terminal, and report persistent approaches to airport staff or police.
  4. Drivers are not allowed inside the arrivals hall. A pre-booked driver waits outside the arrivals exit.

KAA also says tipping is customary for good service but not compulsory, and suggests asking for a receipt at the end of the ride.

Should your driver use the Nairobi Expressway?

The Kenya National Highways Authority describes the Expressway as a 27.1 km dual carriageway from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Road, built as a public-private partnership. Its FAQ page lists interchanges at JKIA, the Eastern, Southern and Western bypasses, Capital Centre, Haile Selassie, Museum Hill, Westlands and James Gichuru Road, and says tolls depend on vehicle type and on where you enter and exit.

For a car this means a toll on top of the fare. It is usually worth it when you are heading to Westlands or the Museum Hill side of the city at a busy time of day, because KeNHA describes it running along the middle of the Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way corridor rather than in the same traffic. For a short hop to hotels near the airport, the toll buys little.

We could not open the concession operator's current toll table on the day of checking, so this guide does not quote a toll amount. Ask the driver for the total including toll, and check the operator's published rate on the day if the difference matters to you.

Buses and matatus

KAA's public transport page mentions the green and yellow Citi Hoppa buses for Nairobi's suburbs and notes that such buses usually seat 20 to 35 passengers with no standing passengers allowed by law. It does not publish a route number, stop or fare for the airport.

Travel guides often name matatu route 34 for the airport road. No official page we could open confirmed its current route or fare, so treat it as local knowledge to check on arrival. The U.S. State Department notes fatal accidents involving matatus and bars its own staff from using them. That weighs against this option with luggage or after dark.

Worked examples

Because JKIA taxi prices are per vehicle and negotiated, the useful calculation is how the agreed price splits, not a fixed number.

One person, one large bag, landing at 22:30. Buses and matatus are out on safety and luggage grounds, and there is no train. The choice is a pre-booked transfer or a desk taxi. Pre-booking fixes the price before you are tired and removes the kerbside negotiation. Budget the whole vehicle fare plus any Expressway toll for yourself alone.

Three or four people with four large bags, landing at midday. One car at a per-vehicle fare divides three or four ways, which usually beats separate seats on public transport once you count the bags. The catch is space. Four large suitcases may not fit a saloon car, so when you book or negotiate, ask for a vehicle size that fits your luggage. A larger vehicle may cost more, but it is still one fare split across the group.

Before you leave the arrivals hall

Arrival formalities come first. Every traveller, including infants, needs an approved Kenya eTA before the journey. Details are in our Kenya eTA and entry rules guide.

At customs, the Kenya Revenue Authority requires the passenger declaration Form F88 for goods above the allowances. Its duty-free limits include 1 litre of spirits or 2 litres of wine and 250 grams of tobacco products in total. Currency of USD 10,000 or more must be declared.

Then check three things: that your pre-booked driver's name and company match your booking, that you have agreed any desk-taxi price including tolls, and whether your phone has data if you plan to use an app. If you are heading on to a safari day in the city, our Nairobi National Park fees guide covers what KWS charges.
