Visitors usually arrive with a mental map of Macau as one place. It is not. The gap between the historic peninsula and the Cotai resorts is a water crossing, and choosing the wrong link turns a fifteen-minute connection into an hour.
What actually connects the three areas?
Four road crossings and one rail network, built across six decades and still expanding. The newest, Macao Bridge, opened on 1 October 2024 and added capacity to a set of crossings that had been carrying growing traffic for years.
| Link | Serves |
|---|---|
| Road bridges, four in total | Peninsula to Taipa, all vehicle traffic including buses |
| LRT Taipa Line | 13 stations across Taipa and Cotai, about 28 minutes end to end |
| LRT Seac Pai Van Line | Coloane side, opened 1 November 2024 |
| LRT Hengqin Line | Mainland crossing, opened 2 December 2024 |
| Bus network | All three areas, the only fully connecting mode |
What does each mode cost?
Less than almost any comparable city, and the gap between paying properly and paying casually is exactly half.
| Mode | Cash | With transport card |
|---|---|---|
| Bus | MOP 6 | MOP 3 |
| Light rail | MOP 6 to MOP 12 single | MOP 3 to MOP 6 |
Buses also give a free transfer window of 45 to 60 minutes when you pay by card, which matters more in Macau than the low base fare does, because cross-water journeys often need two services.
Which link should you use for which journey?
Match the mode to the direction rather than to the distance.
For peninsula-to-Cotai journeys, the bus is the direct answer, since the light rail's operating lines sit on the island side. For movement within Taipa and Cotai — resort to resort, or Taipa Village to the Cotai strip — the light rail is faster and immune to the traffic that builds on the bridges. For Coloane, including Seac Pai Van, the light rail now reaches the area, with buses filling in the village and coastal stops.
- Historic centre to Cotai resorts: bus, or a taxi if you are carrying luggage
- Taipa Village to Cotai: light rail, Taipa Line
- Cotai to Coloane village: bus, with the light rail useful for the Seac Pai Van section
- Anywhere to Hengqin: light rail, Hengqin Line
Where do the casino shuttles fit?
They exist for all six gaming concessionaires and they move a substantial share of Macau's visitor traffic between the ferry terminals, the border crossings and the resorts. What this guide will not tell you is that they are free and open to everyone, because that could not be confirmed from the operators' own published material.
Treat them as a possible convenience to check on arrival rather than as a planned leg of your itinerary. If the shuttle you want is running and open, it is an easy connection; if it is not, the bus covers the same ground for MOP 3.
What about arriving from Hong Kong?
Two routes, moving in opposite directions over the past decade. Ferries take about 60 minutes, with TurboJET serving the Outer Harbour terminal on the peninsula and Cotai Water Jet serving Taipa — and both services have been shrinking. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge shuttle runs 24 hours at MOP or HKD 65 by day and 70 at night.
Which terminal you land at decides your first connection, so book the ferry that matches where you are staying. Arriving at the Outer Harbour when your hotel is on Cotai adds a full cross-water leg to a journey you have already paid for.
What this guide does not cover
Several figures were left out rather than estimated. The journey time for the HZMB shuttle is not published by the operator in a form we could verify, so no minutes appear here. Land-crossing operating hours are likewise absent: the numbers circulating online date from the pandemic period and no current official schedule could be confirmed.
One border note that is confirmed and worth acting on: Qingmao is an automated-clearance-only crossing, so foreign passport holders need Portas do Cerco — the Border Gate — instead. Turning up at the wrong one costs a full backtrack across the northern peninsula.
