Your resort chooses the transfer mode, not you, and distance decides it. The Maldives has no roads between islands. Of the 184 resorts listed with beds at the end of 2025 in the Bureau of Statistics' resort distance table, 62 are within 50 km of the airport and 92 are more than 100 km away. The median resort is about 102 km out, and the farthest is 531 km. That spread explains why one couple is in the pool within half an hour of landing while another is still waiting for a plane.
Which transfer will my resort use?
Visit Maldives puts it simply: speedboats are the norm for resorts close to the international airport, and the rest are reached by seaplane or domestic flight. Your booking confirmation or the resort's reservations team will state which applies.
| Mode | Typical use | Journey times quoted | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speedboat | Resorts near the airport | 15 to 45 minutes in resort listings | Fewer services in the evening |
| Seaplane | Resorts farther away without a nearby airstrip | 20 to 60 minutes of flying | Sunrise to sunset only |
| Domestic flight plus boat | Resorts near one of the 16 domestic airports | e.g. 90 minutes flight plus 10 minutes boat | Scheduled flights, fewer in the evening |
The times come from Trans Maldivian Airways' journey page and from resort listings in the tourism board's 2026 destination guide. The guide counts 19 airports in the country, three of them international. Maldivian, the state airline, lists 19 domestic destinations including Malé.
What happens if my flight lands late?
The seaplane cut-off is the hard limit. Trans Maldivian Airways' FAQ says it flies "only from sunrise to sunset". To reach your resort the same day, you should land at Velana by 15:30. If you land later, the airline suggests spending the night in Malé or Hulhumalé. The airport company's Neeri Lounge in the seaplane terminal also keeps daylight hours, from 05:30 to 18:00.
For the other modes the limit is softer but still real. The destination guide warns that "the frequency of domestic flights and speedboat services also decreases in the evening" and recommends morning arrivals. With a domestic flight, the 2-hour minimum connection time set out by Maldivian comes on top of that. The airline's check-in closes one hour before departure. A 17:00 international arrival therefore cannot connect to a domestic flight before 19:00, and the boat from the regional airport would then run after dark. Whether your resort sends a boat at that hour is its decision, so ask before you book the flight.
The Malé area has enough beds for this. At the end of 2025, the Greater Malé area had 8 hotels with 1,528 beds and 116 guesthouses with 2,976 beds, according to Table 10.15.
What to do after you land
How much luggage can I take on a seaplane?
Trans Maldivian Airways allows 25 kg per person: 20 kg of checked baggage and 5 kg of hand baggage. No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg, and excess costs USD 5 per kg plus taxes, according to its FAQ. The airline also says luggage occasionally follows on a later flight the same day.
A worked example: two adults each arrive with a 23 kg suitcase and a 7 kg cabin bag. That is 30 kg per person, or 5 kg over the 25 kg allowance. At USD 5 per kg, that comes to USD 25 each, or USD 50 for the couple before taxes.
On the other operators, Manta Air's conditions of carriage limit hand baggage to 5 kg and, on its Twin Otter seaplanes, to 33 × 20 × 28 cm. Maldivian allows 20 kg of checked baggage on domestic economy flights, and its excess rates vary by route, for example MVR 56 per kg between Malé and Hanimaadhoo.

Before you book the flight
Send the resort your international arrival time and ask three questions: which transfer mode it uses, the latest landing time it can still transfer you on that day, and what happens if your flight is delayed past that time. If the answer involves a seaplane and your flight lands after 15:30, either choose an earlier flight or book the Malé or Hulhumalé night now rather than at the arrivals counter.
