Do you need an IDP to rent a car in Marrakesh?
Two rules apply, and they are set by different people. The law decides whether your licence is valid on the road. The rental company decides whether it will hand you the keys.
The US State Department's Morocco country page says foreign licences stay valid for up to one year. The UK government's Morocco travel advice goes further for UK drivers: carry the 1968 International Driving Permit together with your UK licence.
Avis Maroc's rental conditions require an IDP only when the licence is not in the Latin alphabet. They also require the licence to have been held for two years, and proof of that if the card does not show the issue date.
| Your licence | Avis Maroc desk | Roadside police | What to carry |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK photocard | Accepted if held 2+ years | UK advice: licence plus 1968 IDP | Both, plus passport |
| US, Canadian, EU (Latin script) | Accepted if held 2+ years | Valid up to one year from arrival | Licence and passport; an IDP avoids arguments |
| Non-Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Cyrillic, Thai) | IDP required | IDP helps officers read it | Licence, IDP, passport |
| New licence, under 2 years | Refused at Avis | — | Check other firms' minimum before booking |
What extra costs come with a Marrakesh car rental?
The Avis Maroc terms read on 23 September 2026 show how a mainstream Moroccan rental is structured. Local firms differ, but the same items usually appear on the contract.
- Age. Drivers must be over 23. Between 23 and 25 a young-driver surcharge applies, and the protection packs are not sold.
- Card hold. Avis pre-authorises a deposit equal to the theft excess: 15,500 to 30,000 dirhams depending on the car, if you do not buy the protection pack. With the mini-pack or full pack, the hold drops to 2,000 MAD. Cash, prepaid cards and Maestro are refused.
- Extra driver. 240 MAD for the whole rental.
- Airport surcharge. 144 dirhams.
- Fuel. Return it full, or pay 21 MAD per missing litre plus a 500 MAD refuelling fee.
- Borders. Use outside Morocco is not allowed.
How much are motorway tolls from Marrakesh?
Morocco's motorways are run by ADM, which charges by section at toll stations. According to ADM's payment page, the lanes accept the Jawaz electronic pass, bank cards, the ADM network card and cash.
Which class is your car
ADM's vehicle class rules put two-axle vehicles up to 1.30 m high, measured at the front axle, in class 1. A two-axle vehicle above that height is class 2. Most rental saloons and small hatchbacks are class 1; if you rent a tall van, expect the booth to charge class 2.
Fares on the Marrakesh routes
These class 1 fares come from ADM's network toll grid, read on 23 September 2026. The grid lists fares in dirhams without a date of effect, so check the booth display.
| Section | Class 1 | Class 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Nouaceur to Marrakech Palmeraie | 83 DH | 124 DH |
| Nouaceur to Marrakech Targa | 89 DH | 133 DH |
| Berrechid Sud to Marrakech Palmeraie | 72 DH | 108 DH |
| Marrakech Targa to Amskroud (towards Agadir) | 74 DH | 124 DH |
| Marrakech Targa to Chichaoua | 20 DH | 33 DH |
| Casablanca to Rabat | 25 DH | 36 DH |
Nouaceur is the interchange by Mohammed V airport, where many Marrakesh road trips start or end.
Jawaz in a rental car
Jawaz is ADM's windscreen pass. Holders use reserved lanes marked with the Jawaz sign and pass at 20 km/h without stopping, according to ADM's Jawaz page. It is sold at toll stations, ADM agencies and partner Afriquia stations, and recharged online.
Whether a rental car carries a Jawaz pass, and how the company bills it, is up to the company. The Avis terms list toll charges among costs the renter owes, with a 490-dirham admin fee if a charge is sent to Avis unpaid. If there is no pass on the windscreen, use the staffed lanes and pay by card or cash.
How do speeding fines work in Morocco?
NARSA, the national road safety agency, lists the limits on its speeding page: 20, 40 or 60 km/h in built-up areas depending on the signs, generally 80 km/h on national roads with some sections at 100 km/h, and 120 km/h on motorways.
| Amount over the limit | Class | Fine | Licence points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 20 km/h | 3rd class contravention | 300 DH | — |
| 20 to under 30 km/h | 2nd class contravention | 500 DH | 2 |
| 30 to under 50 km/h | 1st class contravention | 700 DH | 4 |
| 50 km/h or more | Délit (criminal offence) | Court | — |
How a police stop works
The US State Department notes that Moroccan police often pull drivers over for checks, both in cities and on highways. If you are stopped for speeding, you can ask to see the video evidence. It describes three options:
- Pay the officer on the spot and get a receipt.
- Pay later at the local treasury office (La Perception). The police keep your licence until you do.
- Contest the fine in court, during which your licence and the car's registration may be held.
Worked example: Casablanca airport to Marrakesh and a speed check
You collect a class 1 car at Mohammed V airport and drive to Marrakesh. The toll from Nouaceur to Marrakech Palmeraie is 83 DH. Near Benguerir, a police radar records you at 135 km/h in the 120 zone: 15 km/h over, a 300 DH fine. Paid on the spot, the trip costs 383 DH in tolls and fines.
If the same fine were sent to the rental company instead, Avis would charge the 300 DH plus its 490 DH admin fee: 790 DH, taken from your card after you have left. At 30 km/h over, the fine rises to 700 DH and 4 points, and a forwarded notice would cost 1,190 DH.

Mountain roads: the Atlas crossings
Motorways link Marrakesh with Casablanca and Agadir, but trips to Ouarzazate and the desert use ordinary national roads over the High Atlas, including the Tizi n'Tichka pass. The US State Department describes roads through the Atlas as steep, narrow and winding, and warns that flash flooding is frequent in the rainy season from November to March.
