Train or bus from Amsterdam Centraal

Two public transport options run from Amsterdam Centraal, and the official Zaanse Schans directions page recommends using them because parking at the site is limited.

Train Bus 800
Operator NS EBS (MeerPlus brand)
Get off at Zaandijk Zaanse Schans station Stop beside the Zaans Museum
Ride time About 17 minutes About 24 minutes
Then About 15 minutes on foot Already there
Frequency Check the NS planner Every 15 minutes, 9:00–17:00

Ride times and the bus frequency are from the Zaanse Schans directions page and its travel page on the ticket site (checked 12 October 2026). MeerPlus, the bus brand of EBS, gives the ride as about 25 minutes. The ticket site says lines 800 and 801 run daily "from 1st of July"; line 801 reaches the Schans via Zaandam and continues to Volendam.

Paying for the train

The NS pages we could read do not show a fare for this trip, and the Zaanse Schans travel page notes that the NS price depends on your route, so check the exact amount in the NS planner or app before you go. You can skip buying a ticket by tapping a contactless debit or credit card at the gates. The NS debit card page says no registration is needed, you must check out with the same card, and card travel is always second class without discounts. Our guide to paying for Amsterdam transport by bank card explains one-card-per-person and missed check-outs.

Children aged 4–11 can travel on an NS Railrunner, which NS advertises from €2.50 for a whole day (checked 12 October 2026).

Paying for the bus

On MeerPlus buses you can check in and out with a debit or credit card, use an e-ticket from the MeerPlus app, or buy a Day Ticket from the driver (MeerPlus fares page). The MeerPlus Dagkaart costs €13.50 per adult for a calendar day in 2026 and is valid on all MeerPlus buses in Zaanstreek-Waterland; children travel free with the separate free children's day ticket. The page does not mention line 800 or Amsterdam Centraal by name, so confirm with the driver that it covers your trip.

Is Zaanse Schans free? Tickets and individual prices

The Zaanse Schans FAQ calls it a freely accessible heritage area, and the ticket shop repeats that the village and other locations stay free. You can walk between the windmills, watch the clog workshop and visit the cheese farm and shops without a ticket.

The paid product is the Ticket Zaanse Schans. According to the ticket shop and the Zaans Museum ticket page (checked 12 October 2026), it includes:

  • Zaans Museum with the Verkade Experience
  • Weaver's House and the Cooperage (the ticket shop lists the Cooperage as temporarily closed)
  • Museum Zaanse Tijd and the Windmill Museum
  • Heritage Chambres Kalverringdijk (listed as closed for renovation)
  • Two mills of your choice, if they are open that day
  • A digital audio tour in Dutch and English, plus 10% off at Restaurant De Kraai

Neither page states how long the ticket stays valid, though the Zaans Museum's visit page describes it as access "for a day". If you only want one or two sites, single tickets can be cheaper. The Zaans Museum ticket page lists:

Ticket Adult Ages 4–17
Ticket Zaanse Schans (all sites) €29.50 €20
Zaans Museum only €17 €9
Weaver's House only €4.25 €2.25
Cooperage only €3.50 €2

Under-4s are free. The museum-only ticket is €14 for over-65s and students, a €46 family ticket covers two adults and two children, and Museumkaart and I amsterdam City Card holders enter the Zaans Museum free.

Opening hours and which mills are open

The opening hours page says not every location opens daily, but most are open from 9:00 to 17:00; the information desk keeps the same hours and the car park is open 8:30–17:30. The Zaans Museum opens daily 10:00–17:00 and closes on 25 December and 1 January (checked 12 October 2026).

Mills vary most. The windmills page splits the year into high season (April to September) and low season (October to March). It lists De Kat, De Huisman and Het Jonge Schaap as open every day in both seasons, with exceptions: De Kat closes on public holidays, De Huisman on New Year's Day, and Het Jonge Schaap on Christmas Day and King's Day (27 April). De Bonte Hen opens Tuesday to Sunday in high season and is closed in low season. De Zoeker opens only on some summer Saturdays and is closed in low season. From October to March, that leaves three mills to pick your two from.

The opening hours page also has a "Today" status list for each location, but the copies of that list on the page did not agree when we checked, so confirm with the information desk (open 9:00–17:00) or by phone before relying on a particular mill or museum.

The same page has a "busy times" calendar rating days from Quiet to Very busy. We could not read the levels from the page text, so look at the calendar yourself when you pick a date.

Driving and parking

Set your navigation to Schansend 7, Zaandam. Parking costs €15 per car per visit and €55 per coach. Parking outside the official car park or along the road is not allowed. There are no motorhome spaces at the Schans; the directions page points motorhomes to a site at Willem Prinsplein 2 in Zaandam, booked through Papillon Zaandam (checked 12 October 2026).

What a couple spends for the day

Two adults coming from Amsterdam Centraal, with prices checked 12 October 2026:

Plan What you pay Total for two
Free walk, bus with day tickets 2 × €13.50 MeerPlus Dagkaart + €2 toilets €29
Bus combo with all sites 2 × €39.50 MeerPlus & Zaanse Schans Combination Ticket €79
NS combined ticket with all sites 2 × from €28 from €56
Train by card + Zaans Museum only NS fare from the planner + 2 × €17 €34 + train fare

The MeerPlus & Zaanse Schans Combination Ticket includes a return trip on EBS lines 800 and 801 plus the Ticket Zaanse Schans; it costs €39.50 for adults, €30 for ages 12–17 and €18 for ages 4–11, booked through MeerPlus. Bought separately, the Ticket Zaanse Schans alone (€59 for two) plus two bus day tickets (€27) comes to €86, so the combo saves €7 for a couple.

The same travel page lists an NS combined ticket "from €28" for adults and €19 for ages 4–11. It is a voucher, not an entry ticket: you must exchange it for a valid Ticket Zaanse Schans. The "from" price suggests it depends on where you start, so check the NS price for your station.

Bus or train: which suits you

If you are fitting Zaanse Schans around timed city tickets, start early and return mid-afternoon. Most Zaanse Schans locations close at 17:00, which leaves the evening free for an Amsterdam canal cruise, and a morning in the village pairs well with an afternoon slot at the Rijksmuseum.
