Where is Muscat Airport, and which part of Muscat are you going to?
Muscat International Airport is on Sultan Qaboos Highway between Muscat and Al Seeb. The city spreads east along the coast from there. Qurum and Al Khuwair are on the way in. Ruwi, Muttrah and Old Muscat are at the far eastern end, among the hills.
Where your hotel is changes the choice more than anything else. The bus ends at Ruwi Bus Station. From there, Muttrah Corniche and Old Muscat are a short taxi ride away. Qurum hotels sit near the highway, so a direct taxi usually makes more sense than riding the bus past them to Ruwi and coming back. This guide could not open an official distance table from the airport to each district. For your exact distance, use a map app.
Which option should you take?
| Option | Cost | Time | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mwasalat bus A1 to Ruwi | Mwasalat fare, pay on board | Longest; up to 30 min wait plus stops | Solo, light luggage, staying in Ruwi |
| Bus A1, then local taxi | Bus fare plus a short ride from Ruwi | Adds a transfer at Ruwi | Solo on a budget, heading to Muttrah or Old Muscat |
| Oman Taxi from arrivals | Distance-based, set in the app | Direct, no waiting for a timetable | Groups of 2–4, luggage, late arrivals, Qurum or Muttrah |
| Friend or hotel pick-up | Free for 10 min at arrivals, then OMR 2.100 per 10 min | Direct | Pre-arranged transfer, or someone meeting you |
The pick-up charge comes from Muscat Airport's own forecourt tariff. Anyone collecting you who needs more than 10 minutes should use short-term parking P1. It costs OMR 0.600 for up to 30 minutes and OMR 1.100 for up to an hour.
How does the Mwasalat airport bus work?
Muscat Airport says public buses run by Mwasalat leave from the bus station on the ground floor outside the airport building. Mwasalat's route A1 timetable runs between Al Mabelah, the airport and Ruwi Bus Station, and is marked every 30 minutes. Buses also stop at the old terminal. In the other direction, the same route serves Al Mabelah in the west.
Two things could not be confirmed. Mwasalat's website blocked automated access when this guide was checked, so the current single fare and the exact late-night departures could not be read from an official page. Ask the driver or the Mwasalat desk for the fare, and check the last bus in the Mwasalat app before a late landing.
Taking a taxi from Muscat Airport
The airport says taxis are available through the Oman Airport taxi office in the public arrivals hall. They leave from the taxi area just outside the main terminal building. Oman Taxi says it is licensed by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology to provide transport from Muscat International Airport. The fare is calculated on the distance from the airport to your destination and may include an airport booking fee. Amounts shown in the app after the trip are approved by the ministry. You can pay in cash or with local or international bank cards.
The airport's taxi page mentions a table of estimated fares, but no table was published on the page when this guide checked it. The last public tariff found was from 2023. That year the Oman Observer reported that airport fares through the two licensed apps start at RO 1.5 plus RO 0.250 per kilometre, and that a trip to Ruwi costs about RO 9.2–9.5. Treat those as a 2023 guide only, and confirm the quote at the taxi office before you set off.
Worked examples: one traveller and a group of four
One traveller landing at 10:00 with a backpack, staying in Ruwi. Take the A1. On the timetable the longest wait is 30 minutes. The bus ends at Ruwi Bus Station, so no second leg is needed. The bus costs a fraction of a taxi fare, even at the 2023 rates.
One traveller staying on Muttrah Corniche. The bus to Ruwi still works, but you then need a local taxi for the last stretch with your bags. If you land after dark or feel tired, a direct airport taxi removes the transfer. On the 2023 formula it would cost somewhat more than the Ruwi figure, because Muttrah is further along the coast.
Four adults with four large cases, heading to Qurum. One taxi fare is split four ways. You avoid a 30-minute wait, a trip past your hotel to Ruwi, and a second taxi back. Per person, one taxi costs about the same as four bus tickets plus an onward ride. If the bags will not fit a standard car, ask the taxi office for a larger vehicle before you join the queue.
Switch point: take the bus if you are one person with light bags heading for Ruwi. Take a taxi if you are two or more, going to Qurum or Muttrah, or landing late.
Before you leave the arrivals hall
The Muscat Airport FAQ also says hotel taxis sometimes wait near the exit passageway. If your hotel offers one, agree the price in advance.
