Two questions get conflated when travellers ask whether a chain is local. One is where the brand came from. The other is who owns the company operating it today. In the Philippines these two answers diverge more often than they align, and the divergence runs in both directions.

Everything below comes from the companies' own filings and from the Philippine Stock Exchange's disclosure portal.

The group that dominates the category

Jollibee Foods Corporation was incorporated on 11 January 1978, having grown out of an ice cream business the Tan Caktiong family started in Manila in 1975. As of 31 December 2025 the Jollibee brand alone had 1,341 Philippine stores, 899 of them franchised. Across all its brands the group reported 3,516 stores in the Philippines in the second quarter of 2026, against 7,251 internationally — a total of 10,767 worldwide.

The international majority is the part that surprises people. JFC's growth since 2004 has been substantially through acquisition of foreign brands: Yonghe King in China in 2004, Hong Zhuang Yuan in 2008, Vietnam's Highlands Coffee operator in 2012, Smashburger in the United States from 2015, Tim Ho Wan from Hong Kong from 2018, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in 2019, and Taiwan's Milksha in 2021.

The brand that is American and the company that is not

Shakey's began in California. Shakey's Pizza Asia Ventures, Inc., incorporated on 14 February 1974, describes itself as the exclusive franchise holder for the Shakey's Pizza Restaurant business in the Philippines, and ownership passed in 2016 to Century Pacific Group, Arran Investments Private Limited and the Prieto family.

The same company owns brands that are Philippine in origin. It acquired Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken in June 2019 and the Potato Corner assets in December 2021, and holds a master franchise for Singapore's R&B milk tea.

Its scale is worth noting because Potato Corner drives it: the company reported 2,105 Potato Corner outlets in the Philippines for 2025, against 295 Shakey's Pizza restaurants. Its global network reached 3,074 units at the end of the first half of 2026.

The convenience store question

This is where the intuition fails hardest. 7-Eleven is the most visible convenience chain in Manila and is often assumed to be a foreign import operating directly. It is neither exactly.

Philippine Seven Corporation was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on 23 November 1982 and acquired the 7-Eleven licence from Southland Corporation of Dallas, opening its first store on 29 February 1984. Its own corporate history then records that in 2000, President Chain Store (Labuan) Holdings — a Malaysian holding company affiliated with President Chain Store Corporation, Taiwan's 7-Eleven licensee — purchased 119,575,008 common shares, or 50.4 percent of the outstanding capital stock, at PHP 8.30 per share.

So the brand is licensed from a United States entity, the operating company is Philippine-listed and Philippine-registered, and majority control is Taiwan-affiliated. As of 31 December 2024 it reported 4,130 Philippine stores, 2,156 company-owned and 1,974 franchised.

Where the genuinely homegrown brands are

The clearest Philippine-owned cases are the ones with the least international recognition.

Figaro Culinary Group, formerly Figaro Coffee Group, is Philippine-incorporated and Philippine-listed, with Carmetheus Holdings as parent. As of 31 October 2025 it operated 55 Figaro coffee shops, 159 Angel's Pizza outlets, 8 Tien Ma's and one Koobideh Kebab. All four are its own concepts rather than foreign franchises, which is a detail commonly got wrong about Angel's Pizza in particular.

Bo's Coffee was established by Steve Benitez on 28 June 1996 and positions itself around Philippine-grown beans. It does not publish a store total.

Mercury Drug, which a visitor will pass constantly, opened its first store on 1 March 1945 on Bambang Street, founded by Mariano Que, and states more than 1,200 stores nationwide. Watsons, which occupies the same visual category in malls, is not Philippine at all — it belongs to Hong Kong's AS Watson Group, part of CK Hutchison Holdings.

What to do with this when ordering

The practical use is narrow but real. If the goal is to eat something that exists only in the Philippines, brand ownership is the wrong filter and menu is the right one: Mang Inasal and Chowking serve Philippine food, and so does Max's, regardless of any parent company's acquisitions abroad.

If the goal is to spend with a Philippine-owned company, the filter is the parent, and it rules out 7-Eleven and Watsons while ruling in Shakey's and Krispy Kreme — the opposite of what the signage implies in every case.

What this guide does not cover

Per-brand Philippine store counts for Chowking, Greenwich and Mang Inasal are not published separately by JFC. Only the Jollibee brand is broken out.

McDonald's Philippines publishes no store count, and Alliance Global does not state its percentage holding in Golden Arches Development Corporation.

Max's Group's most recent published figure is 610 stores as of 31 December 2024, with no per-brand breakdown.

FamilyMart Philippines publishes no store count and no ownership statement. Bo's Coffee, Mercury Drug and Watsons Philippines publish no Philippine store totals or ownership structures either.

Several figures above — Uncle John's 415 stores, Mercury Drug's 1,200, Shakey's domestic-international split — appear on company pages with no date attached, and one of Shakey's undated figures does not reconcile with its own dated totals. Where dated and undated figures conflicted, this guide used the dated one.
