The route, stop by stop
Carris's 28E route page lists 34 stops from Martim Moniz to Campo Ourique (Prazeres) (checked 19 October 2026). The stretches that matter to a visitor:
| Section | Stops on the Carris list | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Climb to Graça | Martim Moniz, R. Palma, Igreja Anjos, Sapadores, Graça | The steepest residential streets |
| Castle hillside | Voz Operário, Cç. S. Vicente, Lg. Portas Sol, Miradouro Sta. Luzia, Limoeiro, Sé | Two viewpoints and the cathedral |
| Downtown | R. Conceição, Chiado, Pç. Luís Camões (B. Alto) | Baixa, Chiado, Bairro Alto |
| West | Calhariz (Bica), Cç. Combro, Estrela (Basílica) | Bica, São Bento, Estrela basilica |
| End | R. Domingos Sequeira, Igreja Sto. Condestável, Campo Ourique (Prazeres) | A quiet neighbourhood terminus |
If you only want the hilltop section, get off at Miradouro Sta. Luzia or Lg. Portas Sol and walk down to the Sé and Baixa. The eastern climb and the castle hillside are the part that justifies the tram over a bus.
Check the end of the line on the day. Carris cut the route back to Martim Moniz–Largo Camões from 4 November 2025 for works on Calçada da Estrela, with a minibus covering Campo Ourique and completion planned for February 2026. On 19 October 2026 the route page showed the full route and no service notice.
How much does tram 28 cost?
These are adult fares from 1 January 2026, from Carris's 2026 fares notice and Metropolitano de Lisboa's buy page, checked 19 October 2026.
| How you pay | Price | Valid for |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket bought on board | €3.30 | One tram ride |
| Zapping on a navegante card | €1.72 | One Carris journey |
| Carris/Metro ticket on the card | €1.90 | 60 minutes on Carris and Metro |
| 24h Carris/Metro ticket | €7.25 | Unlimited Carris and Metro for 24 hours |
Carris's fares notice lists no cheaper bank-card fare for trams, so the €1.72 and €1.90 fares need a loaded navegante card; anything bought on board costs €3.30.
The gap adds up quickly. A family of two adults and two children aged 10 and 13 riding end to end pay €13.20 in on-board tickets. With four navegante cards and zapping they pay €8.88, and the cards are ready for the rest of the trip. Our Lisbon transport card guide explains when a 24-hour ticket beats zapping.
Timetable and when to ride
The route page displays a "Holiday – Winter" timetable (checked 19 October 2026). It does not say which stop the times are for. It shows:
- First tram at 6:45 and last at 22:30
- About every 15 minutes between 7:00 and 8:00
- Roughly every 9 to 10 minutes from 8:00 to 20:00
- Wider gaps after 20:00, about every 19 minutes after 21:00
Weekday and summer timetables may differ, so open the route page for your travel date. The practical point holds either way: frequent trams do not mean empty ones. A seat is easiest to get at a terminus, Martim Moniz or Campo Ourique (Prazeres), and in the first hour of service. At mid-route stops such as Chiado or Portas do Sol, the tram arrives with whoever boarded upstream.
Alternatives when tram 28 is full
Tram 12E. Carris's routes list shows 12E running between Martim Moniz and Praça Luís de Camões, the same two points that bracket tram 28's hillside section. We could not open its route page when checking, so look up its stops and departure times on Carris's site before you choose it over 28.
Tram 24E. The same list shows 24E between Praça Luís de Camões and Campolide. It is a way west and north from Chiado, not a substitute for the castle hillside.
Graça funicular. Carris's reopening notice says the funicular between Rua dos Lagares in Mouraria and the Graça viewpoint runs daily 7:00 to 21:00, with 14 passengers per trip and an on-board fare of €4.30 for two trips. Pair it with a walk down through the Mouraria for a Graça visit without the tram queue. The historic lifts elsewhere in the city are a different story; see our guide to the Santa Justa Lift and Lisbon funiculars.
