The one distinction that matters
Phuket's official tourism description draws the line simply: the south coast beaches are typically crowded, the north is far more tranquil. Everything else is detail on top of that.
Match it to what you want your days to be. If your ideal evening involves choosing between forty restaurants and walking home, the busy south is right and the quiet north will feel like exile. If your ideal evening is a book and the sound of the sea, the reverse applies and you should not book a hotel in the middle of Patong because it looked convenient.
The busy west coast
Patong is the concentrated version of Phuket: the most accommodation, the most nightlife, the most shops, and the most noise. Its practical advantage is real. Everything is walkable, transport is easy to find at any hour, and you never need to plan an evening in advance.
Karon and Kata sit south of it along the same coast, quieter but still fully equipped, with the Smart Bus connecting them to Patong and the airport on a single route. For many first-time visitors this is the sweet spot: a proper beach, restaurants within walking distance, and the option of a short ride to the noise rather than living in it.
The quieter options
The northern beaches, and the far south around Rawai and Nai Harn, are the calmer island. Tourism Authority of Thailand lists Rawai, Kamala, Mai Khao and Nai Yang among Phuket's beaches, and notes that several beach areas including Patong, Kata, Karon, Nai Harn, Mai Khao and Nai Yang offer instruction and equipment for diving, snorkelling, windsurfing and sailing.
The trade-off is transport, and it is not small. The Smart Bus route runs the Patong to Rawai corridor; other areas are less connected, and a quiet northern stay usually means a rental car or a lot of arranged drivers.
Phuket Old Town
The Old Town is inland, has no beach, and has more character than anywhere else on the island: Sino-Portuguese shophouses, cafés, markets and a working town that exists independently of tourism. The free Dragon Line shuttle loops around it, and Bus Terminal 2 connects it to Patong for a flat fare.
It suits travellers who want a base with a life of its own and are happy to travel to the sea. It does not suit anyone whose plan is to walk out of the room onto a beach.

Before you book
Check three things: whether the property is on the Smart Bus corridor, whether it is on a hill, and which months your dates fall in. The third one is not cosmetic on this coast, since the southwest monsoon changes what a beach-based holiday here actually looks like.
