Turkish Airlines' check-in deadlines

Turkish Airlines' check-in page gives these times. They are the airline's general rules; the page notes that a few stations differ, and the exceptions it names are all outside Türkiye.

Step International flight Domestic flight
Recommended arrival at the airport 3 hours before 2 hours before
Online check-in 24 hours to 90 minutes before 24 hours to 90 minutes before
Kiosk check-in Opens 12 hours before, closes 60 minutes before Opens 12 hours before, closes 45 minutes before
Counter check-in closes 60 minutes before 45 minutes before

The closing times are hard limits; the 3-hour figure is the airline's advice. The check-in page does not publish when counters open or when gates close at Istanbul Airport.

Work backwards from your departure time

Turkish Airlines' airport access page says Istanbul Airport is about 35 km from the city centre and that taxis run 24 hours, with an average drive of 60 minutes depending on traffic. Using that average and the airline's 3-hour advice, here is a plan for an international flight leaving at 14:00:

Time What happens
By 10:00 Leave central Istanbul by taxi (60-minute average, so this leaves an hour's margin for traffic)
11:00 Arrive at the airport, as Turkish Airlines recommends
12:30 Online check-in closes
13:00 Counters and kiosks close
14:00 Departure

The hour of traffic margin is our own planning buffer, not an official figure. Allow more if you are travelling at rush hour or crossing from the Asian side of the city.

If you are going by public transport, the airline's page refers you to Metro İstanbul, Havaist and İETT for timetables and fares, and the airport's FAQ says the Havaist and İETT buses use the transport floor on level -2. Our Istanbul airports guide explains the options and the İstanbulkart. Check which airport is on your ticket: the same guide covers Sabiha Gökçen, Istanbul's other airport.

Istanbul, Türkiye

Extra time you may need

You overstayed your visa or visa-free period

Istanbul Airport's Visa Violation Office is next to ticket sales island A in the terminal. Passengers who overstayed go there after they have their boarding pass to complete the procedure before leaving. The airport does not publish how long this takes, so arrive earlier than the 3-hour advice and check in as soon as you can. Our Turkey e-Visa and entry rules explain the 90-in-180-day limit that most overstays break.

You are carrying a lot of cash

The Ministry of Trade's customs enforcement FAQ, dated 22 March 2023, says anyone leaving Türkiye with more than 25,000 Turkish lira, or more than €10,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency, must declare it to customs. Not declaring can lead to a fine of 10% of the undeclared amount and seizure of the cash. Allow time for the declaration; our Turkey customs allowances guide covers the rest of the cash and jewellery rules.

You missed the counter deadline

Turkish Airlines' check-in page lists no late check-in option after the counters close. If you are running late, check in online before the 90-minute cut-off, and if you have a bag to drop, make sure you reach the counter at least 60 minutes before an international departure.

If you are connecting, not starting in Istanbul

These deadlines apply when you start your journey at Istanbul Airport. If you are passing through on a long Turkish Airlines connection instead, you may qualify for a free hotel night; see Turkish Airlines' free transit hotel and Stopover.
