Costco is a paid club, not a shop you can walk into

Costco Wholesale sells at warehouse scale to people who have bought an annual membership, and the card is checked before you get inside. Costco's own customer service pages state that membership scanning devices at warehouse entrances require all members to scan a physical or digital membership card before entering, and that guests must be accompanied by a valid member. The membership itself is non-transferable, so borrowing a friend's card is not an option Costco recognises.

What a member can do is bring you. Costco says anyone with a card can bring up to two guests to the warehouse on each visit, while adding that "purchasing items is exclusive to Costco members." So a visitor with an American friend or relative can walk the aisles, taste the samples, choose what they want and have the member pay.

The Shop Card is the one official route for a non-member

A Costco Shop Card is the mechanism Costco itself publishes for letting a non-member spend money in its warehouses. According to the Shop Card FAQs, you must be a Costco member to buy a Shop Card, but "non-members as well as members may use Costco Shop Cards to shop at any Costco location in the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico, as well as online at Costco.com." The same page notes that Shop Cards may be used toward a membership as well as merchandise, and that they are not refundable.

That distinction matters for a traveller. There is no day pass and no visitor ticket. The realistic sequence is that a member buys a Shop Card in your name or hands you one, and you then use it in the warehouse. Whether entry staff wave a Shop Card holder through without an accompanying member varies by warehouse and by day, so treat entry and payment as two separate questions.

What each chain is actually for

The five names get grouped together as "big-box stores," but they solve different problems and a visitor who treats them as interchangeable wastes a morning. The table below sorts them by the trip that justifies going.

Chain What it is for Membership
Costco Bulk quantities at low unit prices Required
Walmart Everyday goods at low prices, very broad range None
Target General merchandise with a design-led own brand None
Trader Joe's Compact grocery, mostly own-label, packaged snacks None
Whole Foods Higher-priced grocery, strong prepared food counters None, Prime optional

Walmart and Target overlap most: both sell clothing, electronics, homeware, toiletries and groceries under one roof. The practical difference for a visitor is tone and location. Target leans towards own-brand design and sits more often in city neighbourhoods; Walmart's American footprint is heavily suburban and built around driving.

What is realistically worth buying as a gift

Gifts that travel well from these shops are the own-label lines you cannot buy at home, not the international brands you can. Costco's Kirkland Signature and Trader Joe's own-label snacks are bought by visitors precisely because they exist nowhere else, and Target's in-house clothing and homeware brands do the same job at a size you can carry.

  • Packaged food and snacks: light, cheap, unmistakably American, and easy to divide among colleagues. Check your own country's rules on importing meat, dairy and fresh produce before you buy them.
  • Toiletries and over-the-counter items: American formulations and pack sizes differ from European and Asian ones, which is why these end up in suitcases.
  • Own-brand clothing and homeware: Target's in-house lines are the usual pick because they are not sold outside the chain.
  • Coffee, condiments and confectionery: dense, unbreakable and legal almost everywhere.

Bulk is the trap. A Costco pack is priced per unit to reward volume, and a warehouse-size box of anything is close to useless if you have 23 kg of checked baggage and a return flight.

Store cards, cash and how you actually pay

Payment in American shops runs on cards, with contactless and chip both normal, and cash accepted almost everywhere but increasingly the slower option. Two details catch visitors out. First, shelf prices exclude sales tax in most of the United States, so the till total is higher than the label. Second, Costco warehouses in the United States limit which card networks they accept for payment, which is a rule specific to Costco rather than a general American practice, so check the accepted networks on Costco's own site rather than assuming your card will work.

Store gift cards are worth understanding as a separate instrument. A Costco Shop Card is not a loyalty card or a discount card; it is stored value that anyone can spend, which is exactly why it works as the non-member route. Whole Foods sits at the other end: no card is needed to shop, but Amazon Prime members who scan the Whole Foods or Amazon app at the till get an extra 10% off storewide sales, excluding alcohol and gift cards. If you already hold Prime at home, it is worth checking whether your account applies in a US store before you queue.

Why Manhattan barely has these formats

The warehouse and supercentre formats depend on cheap floor area and free parking, and Manhattan supplies neither, so the versions you meet there are deliberately shrunken. Target's own description of its estate is explicit about this: typical Target stores average about 125,000 square feet, sizes across the chain "range from several thousand to over 200,000 square feet," and more than 170 of its stores are small-format, placed so the company can operate "in spaces of any size, from dense urban areas to sprawling suburbs to college campuses."

The practical consequence is that a Manhattan Target carries an edited assortment, not the full one. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, both built around smaller footprints from the start, translate to the city more comfortably and are the two you will pass on foot. Costco's warehouse model and Walmart's supercentre model do not shrink the same way, so if either is on your list, plan a deliberate trip outside the dense core and check the chain's own store finder for the nearest location and its opening hours before you set out.

Before you build a shopping trip around this

Decide first whether you are shopping for gifts or for a bulk price, because the answer sends you to different boroughs. Gifts are a walk to a Target, Trader Joe's or Whole Foods and an hour of your time. A genuine Costco run needs a member, a car or a long transit ride, and a suitcase with room in it. Confirm the store location and today's hours on the retailer's own site, since New York opening times vary by branch and by public holiday.

What this guide does not cover

Big-box store formats, entry rules and payment are what this article covers, not current prices, promotions or product availability, all of which change constantly and vary by branch. It also does not cover Costco's business membership rules, its petrol stations, pharmacy or optical services, or the separate question of sales tax refunds, which the United States does not operate as a general visitor scheme in the way many countries do.
