What you are actually choosing between

The four options differ on three axes that matter more than the headline price: whether you get a US phone number, whether you can set it up before you leave home, and whose network your data actually travels on. Everything else is detail.

A US phone number is not a nice-to-have in every trip, but it becomes one the moment a restaurant booking system, a delivery app or a bank verification wants to text you a code that an international number cannot always receive. Travel eSIMs are usually data-only and give you no US number. Home roaming keeps your existing number. A US prepaid line gives you a new US number and keeps your home number only if the phone can run two lines at once.

The United States runs on three national networks, operated by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Everything else you can buy is one of those three networks under another brand, so the real coverage question is which of the three you are on, not which logo is on the app.

Home-carrier roaming: least effort, worst value on a long trip

Roaming with your existing carrier is the only option that requires no new account, no activation and no change to your phone number, which is why it is the right answer for a short trip. Most European, Australian and Asian carriers now sell a daily or weekly travel pass that unlocks a data allowance in the United States for a flat fee, billed on your normal account.

What you give up is cost control on anything longer than about a week, because a daily fee that looks trivial for three days becomes the most expensive option of the four over three weeks. The other risk is the pay-as-you-go rate that applies if you forget to buy the pass, which is charged per megabyte and is the source of most horror-story bills. Check your own carrier's US rate and pass structure before departure; there is no way to answer this one from the US side.

Travel eSIM: fastest to set up, no US number

A travel eSIM is a data-only profile bought in an app before you fly and activated by scanning a QR code, and it is the lowest-friction option available. You choose a data amount and a validity window, install the profile while still on home Wi-Fi, and it connects to a US network on arrival without your touching anything.

The trade-offs are consistent across providers. You normally get no US phone number and no US voice service, so calls happen over apps. Allowances are fixed rather than unlimited, and topping up mid-trip costs more per gigabyte than buying enough at the start. Which US network the eSIM actually uses is often not stated clearly at the point of sale, which matters if you are heading somewhere rural. And your phone must support eSIM, which rules out most handsets more than a few years old and some regional model variants.

US prepaid from the three network operators

Buying prepaid directly from AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon gets you a US phone number, a monthly data allowance and access to the operator's own network, generally without a credit check or a contract. AT&T states the position plainly on its prepaid service page: no annual contracts, no credit checks, and no activation fee on online orders, with activation by physical SIM or by an eSIM activation kit.

Prices read on the carriers' own pages on 7 September 2026 give a sense of the range. T-Mobile Prepaid lists Starter Monthly at USD 40 per month with AutoPay for 15GB of high-speed data, Unlimited Monthly at USD 45 with AutoPay, and Unlimited Plus at USD 60 with AutoPay, each with a higher first-month price and taxes and fees on top. Verizon Prepaid lists a 15GB plan at USD 35 per month with Auto Pay, Unlimited at USD 50 and Unlimited Plus at USD 60, again with a higher first month.

Two footnotes matter more to a visitor than the headline numbers. The AutoPay discount is not automatic: T-Mobile's own broadband facts note that it requires a bank account or debit card, and Verizon's page says a credit or debit card is required, so a visitor without a US payment method may pay the undiscounted rate. And the advertised price excludes government taxes, which T-Mobile's plan label records as "varies by location."

MVNOs: the same networks, repackaged

An MVNO buys wholesale access to one of the three national networks and sells it under its own brand, which is why an MVNO plan can cost noticeably less than the operator's own prepaid plan on the identical network. Visible, for example, is Verizon's own low-cost brand, and its plans page advertises unlimited data, talk and text on Verizon's 5G and 4G LTE networks from USD 25 per month with taxes and fees included, and a Visible+ tier at USD 35 adding premium data on Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband network.

The catch is prioritisation rather than coverage. MVNO traffic is generally deprioritised behind the host network's own customers when a cell is congested, which is invisible at 3am and very visible in a crowded stadium or a Manhattan avenue at rush hour. Many MVNOs also cap video streaming resolution and hotspot speed, and their customer support is thinner if something goes wrong on day one of a trip.

Where the answer flips: coverage outside the cities

Network choice barely matters in New York, Chicago or San Francisco, and matters enormously on a road trip. All three national networks perform acceptably in dense urban areas, so a city-only visitor can pick on price alone. Once you leave metropolitan areas for national parks, desert highways or mountain regions, the differences between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon become the difference between having a map and not having one.

Every operator publishes an interactive coverage map, and every operator's map is optimistic. The useful move is to check the specific places on your route rather than the state as a whole, and to compare two operators' maps for the same route before committing. If your trip includes remote driving, download offline maps regardless of which option you choose, and treat mobile data as a convenience rather than a safety system.

For band compatibility, phones sold for the European, Australian and East Asian markets in recent years generally support the LTE and 5G bands the US networks use, but older or region-specific models can lose 5G or drop to slower speeds. T-Mobile provides an IMEI compatibility check for bringing your own phone, and the other operators offer equivalents; running your IMEI through one takes a minute and settles the question properly.

Set it up before you get on the plane

Activate whatever you choose while you still have reliable Wi-Fi and a working phone number at home, because both eSIM installation and account verification can require a code sent to your existing number. Confirm your handset is unlocked, install the profile, and check that it connects once you land rather than assuming it will. Keep the QR code or activation email accessible offline.
