Vienna Airport (Flughafen Wien, code VIE) sits far enough outside the city that no single transfer option is right for everyone, and a major rail closure running through October 2027 has changed what "take the train" currently means. Check which phase of that closure applies before you plan around the S7.
The disruption that changes this guide right now
Wiener Linien confirms a two-phase closure of Vienna's S-Bahn Stammstrecke, the central urban rail line the airport's S7 service depends on to reach downtown. According to Wiener Linien's own page on the closure, the main closure phase runs from 7 September 2026 through 31 October 2027, shutting the central section between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof — and, specifically, closing Wien Mitte (Landstraße) station to S-Bahn traffic for that entire period.
During this closure, the S7 airport line runs only as a short service between Vienna Airport and St Marx station, well short of its usual Wien Mitte terminus. Wiener Linien lists tram lines 18 and 71 as the connection from St Marx into the city center, alongside expanded City Airport Train shuttle buses and an additional Vienna Airport Bus route from Praterstern as alternatives during the works. If your trip falls inside this window — and at the time this guide was written, it already has begun — build in the extra connection rather than planning around the S7's normal direct run to Wien Mitte.
City Airport Train (CAT)
The City Airport Train is a dedicated non-stop rail service between the airport and Wien Mitte. Vienna Airport's own page lists a journey time of 21 minutes, departures roughly every 12 minutes between 7am and 7pm and every 15 minutes otherwise, and daily operation between 05:30 and 23:37. Listed fares are €14.90 one-way and €24.90 return, with children under 15 travelling free and an online discount sometimes available. Wien Mitte itself is described as a 10-minute walk from St Stephen's Cathedral, with onward U3 and U4 underground connections.

S7 suburban rail
Outside of the current closure, the S7 is the budget rail option, run by ÖBB. Wien Tourismus lists a roughly 30-minute frequency, a journey of about 20 minutes to Wien Mitte in normal operation, and a fare of €5.50 for adults, made up of a €2.30 fare between the airport and the Vienna city boundary plus €3.20 within the city. Wien Tourismus also notes that Wiener Linien multi-day passes cover the S-Bahn within Vienna's city limits, but travelling to or from the airport specifically requires the additional €2.30 short-hop ticket on top of an existing pass.
During the current closure period described above, treat these normal S7 figures as what applies once the Stammstrecke reopens, not as today's actual routing.
Taxi and booked transfers
A metered taxi is the most predictable option while the rail disruption is in effect, since it does not depend on the Stammstrecke works at all.
