Decisions to make before you travel

  • How do you get in from the airport? Until the end of October 2027 no S-Bahn trains run through Wien Mitte. For most arrivals the best value is an ÖBB Railjet or Intercity to Wien Hauptbahnhof: about 15 minutes, twice an hour, on a €5.50 adult ticket. The CAT now runs as a coach to Wien Mitte for €14.90, and the S7 stops at St. Marx (ÖBB, Wiener Linien and WienTourismus, checked 19 October 2026).
  • Which transit ticket? A single costs €3.20 for 80 minutes in one direction; a 24-hour ticket from €9.70 online; a 7-day ticket from €25.20 digital. The 48- and 72-hour tickets have not been sold since 1 January 2026. There are no barriers, but riding without a valid ticket costs €131.60 on the spot.
  • What has to be booked? Schönbrunn sells its Palace Ticket (€42) and State Apartments (€30) online only, with fixed entry times. The Upper Belvedere needs a time slot. Opera standing room goes on sale at 10:00 on the day.
  • What is changing soon? The redesigned Sisi Museum opens on 19 November 2026; until then the day ticket is reduced to €15 because the museum rooms are closed, while the Imperial Apartments stay open.
  • What does the hotel add? Vienna's tourist tax is 5% of the accommodation price excluding VAT and breakfast, rising to 8% for stays from 1 July 2027.
