Vienna Public Transport Tickets: Prices, Passes and Fines

How much do Vienna transit tickets cost?

Wiener Linien's own product pages show online prices as "from" figures. WienTourismus publishes the standard fares. The table combines both (checked 19 October 2026).

WienTourismus lists the 24-hour ticket at €10.20 without naming the format, while Wiener Linien shows "from €9.70" in its web shop (page updated 16 October 2026). Check the price at the machine or in the WienMobil app before you pay.

The Wiener Linien single-journey page lists a digital single "from €1.50" and a posted paper single "from €1.60". It does not say which passenger type those figures apply to. Two posted singles cost "from €3.20", which equals two child fares, so do not read €1.50 as the adult price.

Which ticket should you buy?

Count your rides, then do the arithmetic:

• One or two rides a day: buy singles. Two singles cost €6.40, less than a 24-hour ticket.
• Four or more rides in one day: the 24-hour ticket wins. Three singles cost €9.60, close to the €9.70 online price.
• Three days or more: the digital 7-day ticket at €25.20 already beats three 24-hour tickets. The 7 Days VIENNA page lets you choose the start date, and the ticket runs until 01:00 on the eighth day.

The digital 7-day ticket is cheaper, but it is issued to one person and valid only with an official photo ID in that name. The €28.90 paper version can be shared "not at the same time". That suits a couple who take turns going out, but not a family travelling together.

Scenario: two adults staying four nights, riding five or six times a day. Two digital 7-day tickets cost €50.40. Four 24-hour tickets each would cost at least €77.60.

How to validate, and what Tap+Ride changes

A paper ticket is not valid until it is stamped. WienTourismus says to insert it text side up into a blue validation machine at U-Bahn and S-Bahn station entrances until you hear a beep. On trams and buses, you validate inside the vehicle. A 24-hour or 7-day paper ticket is stamped once, at the start.

Wiener Linien's conditions of carriage treat tickets stamped more than once, or on the wrong side (for example on the back), as invalid. Digital tickets need no stamping, because the validity period is printed on the ticket.

Where to buy: the WienMobil app (credit card only), ticket machines, ticket machines inside trams, Wiener Linien ticket offices and tobacconists (Trafik).

Tap+Ride: paying with your card

Since 28 May 2026, Wiener Linien has run a one-year Tap+Ride pilot. At devices next to the ticket machines in nine U-Bahn stations, you tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard, phone or watch before travelling. That buys a regular single ticket for the core zone.

The nine stations are Südtiroler Platz–Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, Bahnhof Meidling, Stephansplatz, Schwedenplatz, Spittelau, Zieglergasse, Neubaugasse and Erdberg. There is no tap-out and no daily cap mentioned. At an inspection, show the same card or device; the inspector reads it by NFC. Your bank may add currency-conversion fees. A child aged 6 to 14 or a dog needs a separate reduced-ticket tap.

Children, dogs and free travel

According to Wiener Linien's discounts page:

• Children ride free on Wiener Linien until the end of the school year in which they turn six. On ÖBB S-Bahn trains, free travel ends at the sixth birthday.
• Children up to their 15th birthday ride free on Sundays, public holidays, during Viennese school holidays and on 2 and 15 November.
• Otherwise ages 6 to 14 pay the reduced fare. The German single-trip page asks for a photo ID as proof of age.

Inspections and fines

There are no ticket gates. Inspectors check on board and in station exit areas. The conditions of carriage, valid from 1 September 2026, set the penalty fare on top of a regular ticket:

A €15 processing fee can also apply. If you forgot a personal ticket such as an annual pass and show it within two weeks, the penalty is waived. That does not apply if you already paid anonymously on the spot.
