How do you get from Las Américas Airport to the Zona Colonial?
The airport, officially Aeropuerto Internacional Las Américas José Francisco Peña Gómez, is run by AERODOM. Its location page places it at La Caleta, a few minutes from the city, and says that if you are driving out from downtown the airport exit is on your right immediately after the toll. In other words, the Las Américas toll plaza sits between the airport and the city.
The airport's taxi page says taxi service is provided by the SICHALA union, which the Ministry of Tourism authorizes to operate at the airport, and that you can take one from the stand on the ground floor at the main entrance or call ahead.
There is no rail link. This guide found no official bus route that serves the terminal: the airport's own pages mention only taxis, car hire and private cars, and the public bus operator OMSA's service pages could not be opened. Treat public transport from the terminal as unconfirmed.
| Option | Cost | When it is best | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| SICHALA taxi, walk-up | Around USD 40 to the Distrito Nacional, 1–4 people | Most arrivals, any hour | Walk-up price "may vary slightly" |
| SICHALA taxi, booked | USD 40 (Distrito Nacional) or USD 35 (Santo Domingo) | Late arrivals, groups who want a fixed price | Needs a reservation |
| Rental car | Daily rate plus RD$100 toll | Onward road trips, not a Zona Colonial stay | Minimum age 25; parking in the old town |
| Uber or Cabify | App price | Travellers already using the app | Airport pickup rules not published |
Which taxi fare applies to the Zona Colonial?
SICHALA's rate list prices trips from the airport in US dollars, for one to four passengers, one way. It has two entries that could cover the city: "Distrito Nacional" at USD 40 and "Santo Domingo" at USD 35. The Zona Colonial is in the Distrito Nacional, the capital district, so expect the USD 40 line unless the dispatcher tells you otherwise. The list has no separate entry for the Zona Colonial or other neighbourhoods.
SICHALA states that these are rates for reservations and that if you arrive without one the price could vary slightly. The list does not mention luggage charges, night surcharges or whether the toll is included, so ask about all three when you agree the fare.
Worked example: solo traveller versus a group of four
This combines SICHALA's Distrito Nacional rate, its 1–4 passenger rule and RD Vial's toll for a car.
| Traveller set-up | Taxi fare | Toll, if charged separately | Per person |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person to a Zona Colonial guesthouse | USD 40 | RD$100 | USD 40 plus the toll |
| 3 people with a case each | USD 40 | RD$100 | About USD 13.35 plus a third of the toll |
| 4 people with a case each | USD 40 | RD$100 | USD 10 plus a quarter of the toll |
| 5 or more, or more bags than a car holds | Ask for a larger vehicle | RD$100 or more by vehicle class | Quote on request |
For a group of three or four the airport taxi is hard to beat. For a solo traveller on a budget, the taxi is still the only confirmed option from the terminal, so the saving comes from booking in advance rather than switching mode.
Is there a toll between the airport and the city?
Yes. RD Vial, the state toll operator, lists the Las Américas toll plaza at km 22 of the Autopista Las Américas, charging RD$100 for a two-axle car and RD$200 for a two-axle vehicle with twin rear wheels, such as some vans. The plaza has lanes for the Paso Rápido electronic tag.
The Ministry of Tourism's getting-around guide gives RD$60 to RD$100 as the usual range per booth nationwide, so the Las Américas plaza sits at the top of that range for a car.
Can you take Uber or rent a car at SDQ?
The Ministry of Tourism says Uber operates in Santo Domingo, and that Cabify also runs in the city. Neither the airport nor the ministry publishes where app rides may pick up at the terminal, so check the app on airport wi-fi before you walk past the taxi stand.
Car hire counters are in the centralized exit corridor next to the Terminal Norte, according to the airport's car rental page, which lists 15 companies. The ministry says renters must be at least 25 and hold a valid licence from home. For a stay in the Zona Colonial, with its narrow colonial streets, a car mostly adds a parking problem; it makes more sense if you are driving on to Punta Cana or the north coast.
Before you leave the terminal
The airport reminds passengers that the E-Ticket is mandatory for each passenger and must be completed before check-in; the Dirección General de Migración says it is free and applies on both entry and exit. Our E-Ticket and tourist card guide explains the form and the 30-day stay rule.
Heading to the east coast instead? The Punta Cana airport guide covers transfers from PUJ, which is closer to the Bávaro resorts than SDQ.
