What the €2 ticket covers

The fee is for the inner perimeter: the steps and area right beside the basin, which the official Trevi Fountain site calls the monumental area. The piazza in front of the fountain is not ticketed. Roma Capitale's own FAQ says the fountain is always visible from outside, with or without a ticket.

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina's page adds two details: the inner area holds about 400 people at a time, and, unlike many state museums, the fee still applies on the first Sunday of the month (checked 8 October 2026). The city says the money goes to protecting and maintaining the fountain.

Who pays and who enters free

Everyone not on the exemption list pays €2. Free entry, according to the official site's FAQ (checked 8 October 2026), covers:

  • residents of Rome and the Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale, on showing an identity card;
  • children under 6 (the Sovrintendenza words it as "up to 5 years");
  • people with disabilities and one companion;
  • licensed tour guides, on showing a valid badge;
  • holders of a valid Roma MIC Card.

You show the document proving the exemption at the ticket office; without it you pay. The MIC Card costs €5 for 12 months but is only for adults who live or are domiciled in the metropolitan area and for students at Rome's universities, so a short-stay visitor cannot use it (checked 8 October 2026).

For a family of two adults with children aged 8 and 4, the cost is €6: three paying tickets and one free child.

Hours and dates that change

Day Paid access Last entry
Monday, Friday 11:30–22:00 21:00
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9:00–22:00 21:00
Saturday, Sunday 9:00–22:00 21:00

The shorter Monday and Friday mornings come from the official site (checked 8 October 2026). Turismo Roma's launch article of 30 January 2026 gave 9:00–22:00 every day; the fountain's own site is the more recent and specific source, so plan with its table.

The site also lists one-off changes for maintenance or public order. For the rest of 2026 it shows entry from 14:00 on Mondays 12 and 26 October, 9 and 23 November, and 7 and 21 December; from 11:30 on 24 and 29 December; and from 9:00 on 25 and 28 December. Before the listed start time you cannot go down to the basin, but you can still see the fountain from the square.

After 22:00 the fountain stays visible free of charge. Late evening is the easiest time to see it without paying, though you will not get down beside the water.

How to buy and pay

Where Payment Good for
Online on the official site Online Joining the separate ticket-holder line
Civic museums, Tourist Infopoints, partner outlets Cash or card Paying cash, buying for a group
Ticket office at the entrance Card only Deciding on the spot

Pre-bought tickets are open: they carry no date or time, and the official FAQ says they cannot be refunded or changed (checked 8 October 2026). That makes buying ahead low-risk if you are sure you will go, and pointless if you might only look from the square.

Getting in: lines, entrance and exit

There are no toilets or cloakroom inside, and the site asks visitors to bring small bags only. Dogs must be in a carrier, or on a lead and muzzled. The official site also shows a crowd indicator based on average attendance, which helps you pick a quieter hour.

The nearest metro is Barberini on line A, about five minutes' walk; Cavour on line B is about 15 minutes. Buses 30, 46, 60, 118 and 190F stop near Piazza Barberini and Piazza Venezia. For fares and contactless payment on the metro and buses, see Rome metro and bus tickets.

Rules inside and the fines

Inside the inner area you may not eat, drink, smoke or sit on the edge of the basin. The official site lists the penalties under Roma Capitale's ordinances (checked 8 October 2026):

What is banned Penalty
Throwing objects other than the traditional coin, pouring liquids, sitting, picnicking, climbing, letting animals drink or washing anything €40–240
Bathing in the fountain or drawing water €450
Damaging the fountain or its base Arrest of up to one year or a fine of at least €2,065

The coin toss is explicitly allowed. Paddling for photos is not, and the €450 fine applies.
