Which option fits your hotel
Kansai International Airport is about 50 km from central Osaka, according to the airport's access page. The two rail operators serve different parts of the city, so the right choice depends on where you are staying. Times below are the approximate figures on the airport's train page, which exclude transfers, and the bus operator's timetables:
| Destination | Best direct option | About | Adult price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Namba | Nankai Rapi:t α / β | 34 / 39 min | ¥1,410 Rapi:t Digital Ticket |
| Namba, on a budget | Nankai Airport Express | 43 min | ¥970 ordinary fare |
| Namba (OCAT) | Limousine bus | 50 min | ¥1,400 |
| Tennoji | JR HARUKA | 30 min | ¥1,300 visitor ticket; ¥1,600 if bought from 1 Nov 2026 |
| Tennoji, on a budget | JR Kansai Airport Rapid | 45 min | ¥1,060 ordinary fare |
| Shin-Osaka, Kyoto | JR HARUKA | 50 / 75 min | ¥1,800 / ¥2,200; ¥1,900 / ¥2,700 if bought from 1 Nov |
| Osaka Station (Umeda) | JR Kansai Airport Rapid | 65 min | Ordinary fare (see below) |
| Osaka Station (Umeda) | Limousine bus | 60 min | ¥1,800 |
The two ordinary fares come from JR West's 2026 fact sheet, which compares JR and Nankai fares as of 1 April 2026: ¥1,060 between Tennoji and Kansai Airport by JR and ¥970 between Namba and Kansai Airport by Nankai. Nankai's own English pages do not print its ordinary fare, and none of the official pages we could read gives the JR fare from the airport to Osaka Station, so for that trip check the fare chart above the ticket machines. On JR, an ICOCA card (sold at the station's JR ticket machines) saves you working it out; on Nankai, a contactless bank card can.
Kansai-Airport Station is connected to the 2nd floor of Terminal 1 and the Aeroplaza. From Terminal 2, take the free inter-terminal shuttle bus, which the airport says takes 7–9 minutes. JR (blue) and Nankai (red) share the station building and are signed separately.
Nankai to Namba: Rapi:t or Airport Express
Nankai runs two kinds of airport train to its Namba terminal.
Rapi:t is the reserved-seat limited express. You pay the ordinary fare plus a limited express charge, which Nankai's Rapi:t page lists as ¥700 for a Regular Seat and ¥910 for a Super Seat (children ¥350 and ¥560). Nankai's January 2026 notice shows this charge rose on 1 April 2026; booking through the Nankai ticketless service is ¥150 cheaper, and buying the charge on board costs ¥300 more. Seats go on sale one month ahead, and spare seats can be bought from vending machines on the day.
The simplest all-in option for visitors is the Rapi:t Digital Ticket, which covers the fare and the seat charge:
- ¥1,410 adult and ¥710 child for a Regular Seat; ¥1,590 and ¥910 for a Super Seat.
- Valid only on the date you choose. You pick a seat on your phone and scan the QR code at the designated gates.
- Valid to Namba and the intermediate Rapi:t stops (Tengachaya, Shin-Imamiya and others). The faster Rapi:t α skips Sakai.
- Unused tickets can be refunded free until five minutes before departure, and you can change trains twice. A child ticket cannot be bought on its own, and a dead or lost phone means no refund.
Airport Express trains need no reservation: you pay only the ordinary fare, ¥970 for an adult in JR West's fare comparison (as of 1 April 2026). That is ¥440 less than the Rapi:t Digital Ticket, or ¥700 less than the fare plus a Rapi:t charge bought at the station, for about nine more minutes than the fastest Rapi:t on the airport's estimates. With luggage at a busy time, the reserved seat is the main reason to pay more.
Paying by tapping a bank card
Nankai accepts contactless credit, debit and prepaid cards at dedicated gates, as a pilot at selected stations. Its touch payment guide names Namba and Kansai International Airport among the places the pilot connects, and you simply tap in and out. The Q&A adds that you cannot leave through a station without the reader, and that tapping always charges the adult fare, even for children. Neither page says whether the Rapi:t charge can be paid this way, so for Rapi:t buy the digital ticket or a seat ticket.

JR HARUKA and the Kansai Airport Rapid
HARUKA is JR West's airport limited express to Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. Most foreign visitors use the HARUKA One-way Discount Ticket. JR West's ticket page lists these prices from Kansai Airport, which depend on the date you buy, not the date you travel:
| To | Adult, bought by 31 Oct 2026 | Adult, bought from 1 Nov 2026 | Child (6–11), from 1 Nov |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tennoji | ¥1,300 | ¥1,600 | ¥800 |
| Osaka, Shin-Osaka | ¥1,800 | ¥1,900 | ¥950 |
| Kyoto | ¥2,200 | ¥2,700 | ¥1,350 |
| Kobe | ¥2,000 | ¥2,300 | ¥1,150 |
| Nara | ¥1,800 | ¥2,200 | ¥1,100 |
Conditions on JR West's pages:
- Only for holders of a foreign passport who entered Japan as a Temporary Visitor; Japanese nationals cannot use it.
- JR West says it cannot be bought in Japan. Reserve it on JR-WEST Online Train Reservation, paying by credit card (virtual and numberless cards are refused), or buy an e-ticket from a travel agency abroad. Then collect it at a station ticket machine, which needs a passport with an IC chip, or at a ticket office.
- It covers HARUKA's ordinary cars, reserved or unreserved, and non-reserved seats on local and rapid trains. You may not break the journey at intermediate stations.
- The refund fee is at least ¥560.
If you have not bought yet, timing matters most for Kyoto (+¥500), Nara (+¥400) and Tennoji and Kobe (+¥300); Osaka and Shin-Osaka rise only ¥100. The global version of the page shows the same table. Both pages still carry a note that their information is current as of 5 February 2025, so treat the JR-WEST Online Train Reservation price at checkout as final.
The Kansai Area Pass, which included HARUKA reserved seats, shows a notice that sales ended on 30 September 2026. Do not plan around it unless you already hold one.
Kansai Airport Rapid Service is the slow, unreserved JR option. JR West's Kansai Airport station guide says it runs directly to Osaka Station (Umeda) and Tennoji, and that the train splits at Hineno, so ride in the first four cars for the airport. The same page says:
- The JR ticket office at the station opens 5:30–23:00.
- Regular machines sell rapid and local tickets and ICOCA cards; credit cards cannot be used to buy ICOCA.
- Green machines sell HARUKA tickets; card payment there needs your PIN.
Airport limousine buses
The airport limousine buses are run by Kansai Airport Transportation Enterprise (KATE). Its route list and route pages give these one-way fares for central Osaka (checked 30 October 2026):
| To | Adult / child | About | Kansai Airport stop (T1 / T2) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osaka Station (Umeda) | ¥1,800 / ¥900 | 60 min | 5 / 1 |
| Kintetsu Uehommachi, Shinsaibashi | ¥1,800 / ¥900 | 55 min | 7 / 8 |
| Namba (OCAT) | ¥1,400 / ¥700 | 50 min | 11 / 6 |
Times are from Terminal 1; buses from Terminal 2 call there first, and KATE puts the run between the terminals at about 15 minutes. Stop numbers are from KATE's airport bus-stop page, which also says credit cards are accepted at the ticket office. Other details from the route pages:
- Osaka Station: stops include Hankyu Sanbangai and Herbis Osaka. A 14-day round trip costs ¥3,300 for an adult. Some late-night departures are marked as cashless only, with no extra bus if full; check the timetable for your terminal's last bus.
- Uehommachi and Shinsaibashi: first and last buses from Terminal 1 at 7:25 and 21:35. If all seats are reserved you cannot board at Shinsaibashi (Hotel Nikko Osaka).
- Namba (OCAT): run with Nihon Kotsu; first and last buses from Terminal 1 at 6:10 and 21:25.
- Tennoji: KATE's route list marks the Abeno Harukas (Tennoji Station) line as "Cancellation of service", so take the train.
For Umeda the bus and the HARUKA visitor ticket, which JR West prices the same to Osaka and Shin-Osaka, cost about the same (¥1,800, or ¥1,900 for HARUKA tickets bought from 1 November). The bus means no stairs or transfers with luggage; the train avoids road traffic.

Taxi and fixed-fare cars
The airport's taxi page gives these approximate standard fares including bridge and expressway tolls:
| To | About |
|---|---|
| Chuo-ku, Osaka City | ¥23,320 |
| Kita-ku, Osaka City | ¥24,400 |
| Shin-Osaka Station | ¥25,480 |
| Tennoji Station | ¥21,970 |
The page does not list Namba or Umeda by name; it says the figures include ¥2,260 of tolls for most Osaka City destinations and that fares rise by 20% between 22:00 and 5:00. It also notes that the "Airport Taxi" standard fares are "no longer available" as of 31 May 2024, so treat these figures as rough. Taxis leave from stand 5 on the 1st floor of Terminal 1; reserved taxis from stands 1 and 7; ride-hailing apps (Uber, DiDi, GO) pick up at stand 2.
MK Taxi's reserved fixed-rate service to Umeda starts at ¥16,400 per vehicle plus expressway tolls; book ahead and meet at the MK counter in Terminal 1. NearMe offers shared rides at about 60% of a regular fare, by reservation.
For two people going to Shin-Osaka, HARUKA visitor tickets cost ¥3,800 (bought from 1 November) against roughly ¥25,480 by meter; two adults on the bus to Osaka Station pay ¥3,600. A taxi only makes sense for a large group with heavy luggage, a late arrival or someone who cannot manage stairs and transfers.
After you arrive
At Namba or Tennoji you will probably switch to the subway; our Osaka Metro fares guide covers single fares, the day pass and contactless payment. The Osaka Metro and Osaka City Bus 1day/2day pass is also sold at the Kansai Tourist Information Center in Terminal 1, according to Osaka Metro. Osaka also charges an accommodation tax per night; see our Osaka accommodation tax guide. Heading on to Kyoto later instead of from the airport? Compare the lines in our Osaka to Kyoto train guide.
If you will sightsee hard the day after landing, the Osaka Amazing Pass KIX version costs ¥5,300 for 28 hours and includes one Nankai ride from Kansai Airport to Namba, but not reserved-seat limited expresses or limousine buses, according to the pass operator. Our Osaka Amazing Pass guide works out when it pays off.
