The three lines compared
All three are ordinary commuter railways: you can walk on with a paper ticket or an IC card and no reservation. JR West's fare and time comparison gives fares as of 1 April 2026 and the fastest weekday daytime journey on each line; Keihan's figures are confirmed in its own fare table from Yodoyabashi, revised on 1 October 2025.
| Line | Osaka station | Kyoto station | Adult fare | Fastest time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JR West | Osaka (Umeda) | Kyoto Station | ¥580 | 28 min |
| Hankyu | Osaka-umeda | Kyoto-kawaramachi | ¥410 | 43 min |
| Keihan | Yodoyabashi | Sanjo | ¥490 | 50 min |
| Keihan | Yodoyabashi | Gion-Shijo | ¥490 | not stated |
| Keihan | Yodoyabashi | Demachiyanagi | ¥550 | 54 min (daytime) |
Times are platform to platform. Keihan's Premium Car page gives the 54-minute daytime time to Demachiyanagi and about 40 minutes from Kyobashi to Gion-Shijo by limited express. Neither JR's comparison nor Keihan gives a fastest time to Gion-Shijo from Yodoyabashi; it is one stop before Sanjo.
Which station fits your hotel
The fare difference between the lines is at most ¥170 one way. What changes your day is where each line arrives, because a bus or subway transfer in Kyoto costs time and another fare.
Staying around Kyoto Station: take JR. It is the fastest line and arrives there directly.
Staying downtown around Shijo, Karasuma or Kawaramachi (Nishiki Market and the shopping streets): take Hankyu to Karasuma or Kyoto-kawaramachi. It is the cheapest line and stops right in the commercial centre.
Staying in Gion, near Kiyomizu-dera or along the Kamo River: take Keihan to Gion-Shijo, Kiyomizu-gojo or Sanjo. From Yodoyabashi each of these costs ¥490.
Going to Fushimi Inari or northern Kyoto: Keihan's Fushimi-inari station is ¥480 from Yodoyabashi, and Demachiyanagi, at the north end of the line, is ¥550. Our Fushimi Inari guide covers the shrine itself.
If your Kyoto hotel is far from all three, compare the train plus a bus or subway ride; our Kyoto bus and subway fares guide has the city fares and day passes.

The Osaka end
The Osaka stations matter as much. JR leaves from Osaka Station and Hankyu from Osaka-umeda, both in the Umeda district in the north of the city. Keihan starts at Yodoyabashi and also stops at Kitahama, Temmabashi and Kyobashi; Keihan's 2026 guide points out that Kyobashi and Temmabashi give direct access to central Kyoto without a transfer.
If you are staying in Namba or Shinsaibashi, you first ride Osaka Metro north to Umeda (for JR or Hankyu) or to Yodoyabashi (for Keihan). That extra metro fare is part of the real cost; our Osaka Metro fares guide has the numbers.
Paying: tickets, IC cards and passes
You can buy a paper ticket at the station machines or tap an IC card. The Osaka tourism bureau's pass page notes that ICOCA, JR West's IC card, works on JR, Osaka Metro, private railways and buses.
Day passes rarely beat single fares for a simple Kyoto day trip:
- Osaka Amazing Pass: its conditions cover Hankyu and Keihan only on sections mainly within Osaka City, so it does not get you to Kyoto. See our Amazing Pass guide for what it is good for.
- Keihan Kyoto-Osaka Sightseeing Pass: Keihan's April 2026 guide lists it at ¥1,650 for one day or ¥1,850 for 24 hours. A plain round trip from Yodoyabashi to Gion-Shijo costs ¥980, so the pass is worth it only if you add about ¥670 or more of other Keihan rides that day, for example out to Fushimi-inari and Demachiyanagi. Check the pass conditions with Keihan before you buy; the guide warns that prices may change without notice.

Reserved seats: PRiVACE and the Premium Car
On busy weekends and in the November leaf season the trains can be crowded. Both private railways sell reserved seats in one car of selected trains, on top of the ordinary fare:
| Service | Line | Supplement | Booking | Which car |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRiVACE | Hankyu Kyoto Line | ¥500 flat | Online from 14 days ahead | 4th car from the Osaka-umeda end |
| Premium Car | Keihan Main Line | ¥400–¥500 (¥500 Yodoyabashi–Demachiyanagi) | Windows from 10:00, 14 days ahead; platform machines; online in Japanese | 6th car from the Kyoto end |
Hankyu's PRiVACE page says the seat ticket applies to Limited Express, Commuter Limited Express and Semi-Limited Express trains. Keihan's Premium Car runs on its limited-express-type trains between Yodoyabashi and Demachiyanagi; its ticket windows take cash only, while the platform machines take credit cards, IC cards and QR payment for the next five trains.
Worked example: two adults staying near Gion
A round trip on Keihan from Yodoyabashi to Gion-Shijo costs ¥490 × 4 = ¥1,960 for two people, or up to ¥3,960 with Premium Car seats both ways (four seat tickets at ¥400–¥500). On JR the same couple pays ¥580 × 4 = ¥2,320 to Kyoto Station, then needs a bus or subway to reach Gion. Keihan is cheaper, needs no transfer, and the seats are optional.
Before you go
JR West says its figures are fares as of 1 April 2026 and fastest daytime times on weekdays; evening, early-morning and weekend trains can be slower. Hankyu notes that its station timetables do not show special schedules such as those in the tourist season, so check on the day in November. JR West stopped selling the Kansai Area Pass on 30 September 2026; our guide to the JR pass options that remain sets out when a pass still beats single fares.
