What happened to the Kansai Area Pass

JR West's Kansai Area Pass page now carries the notice "Sales ended as of September 30, 2026", and the JR-WEST RAIL PASS overview shows no booking link for it. Passes bought by that date remain valid for their whole validity period.

The pass had been sold for 1 to 4 consecutive days at ¥2,800, ¥4,800, ¥5,800 and ¥7,000 for adults, with JR trains in the Kansai area, HARUKA airport trains and separate vouchers for the Kyoto City Subway, Keihan and Hankyu.

All the passes are only for holders of a foreign passport entering Japan with "Temporary Visitor" (短期滞在) status; Japanese nationals cannot use them, even with permanent residency abroad. JR West's pages state their prices as current as of 2024 or 2025 and subject to change, and the passes' area maps are images, so check the map before you rely on a particular station.

Kansai Mini Pass

The Kansai Mini Pass page gives ¥3,000 for adults (12 and over) and ¥1,500 for children (6–11), valid from 0:00 on the first day to 24:00 on the third. It covers JR rapid, special rapid and local trains in the valid area, naming Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Nara and giving the Kansai-Airport Rapid Service as an example of a covered train. HARUKA and other limited expresses, the Shinkansen and paid seats need separate tickets.

The page describes only one way to get it: buy an E-TICKET from a sales location outside Japan, then exchange it in Japan within three months. You can hold only one pass of the same type for the same dates.

Kansai WIDE Area Pass

The Kansai WIDE Area Pass costs ¥12,000 for five days. It reaches much further than Osaka's day trips, with reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama and on limited expresses such as HARUKA, KUROSHIO, KONOTORI and SUPER HAKUTO. The Tokaido Shinkansen towards Tokyo is not included. It only makes sense if your plan includes long trips, for example to Okayama, Wakayama or Tottori, not for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe alone.

HARUKA One-way Ticket: price rise on 1 November

If the Kansai Area Pass was mainly your airport ticket, the replacement is the HARUKA One-way Ticket. Its price goes up for tickets sold from 1 November 2026, according to JR West; the price depends on the purchase date, not the travel date.

Kansai Airport to Sold to 31 Oct 2026 Sold from 1 Nov 2026
Tennoji ¥1,300 ¥1,600
Osaka or Shin-Osaka ¥1,800 ¥1,900
Kobe ¥2,000 ¥2,300
Nara ¥1,800 ¥2,200
Kyoto ¥2,200 ¥2,700

Children pay half. The WEST QR version of the ticket lists the same prices; it is shown on your phone and can be bought only from travel agencies abroad. The standard ticket can also be reserved through JR-WEST Online Train Reservation, but it cannot be bought within Japan. Our Kansai Airport to Osaka guide compares HARUKA with the other airport trains and buses, and our Kansai Airport to Kyoto guide covers the Kyoto run.

Osaka, Japan

Pass or single fares: the break-even

JR West's own fare comparison gives these adult single fares as of 1 April 2026:

JR journey Single Round trip Fastest time
Osaka – Kyoto ¥580 ¥1,160 28 min
Osaka – Sannomiya (Kobe) ¥420 ¥840 21 min
Tennoji – Nara ¥510 ¥1,020 33 min
Tennoji – Kansai Airport ¥1,060 — 49 min (32 min by limited express, extra charge)

Worked example: three day trips

Kyoto, Nara and Kobe on three consecutive days cost ¥1,160 + ¥1,020 + ¥840 = ¥3,020 in JR round trips. The Kansai Mini Pass costs ¥3,000. That is a ¥20 saving, so the pass is worth it only if you also ride JR within Osaka on those days, add a fourth trip, or use it for the airport train on day one or three. Buying it abroad in advance also commits you to dates.

For two day trips, single fares win clearly. For trips to Kyoto in particular, the private railways can be cheaper still: Hankyu is ¥410 to central Kyoto in JR West's own comparison. Our Osaka to Kyoto train guide compares all three lines by hotel location.
