They are neighbours, not alternatives
Ayala Land describes Bonifacio Global City as located in Taguig and about three kilometres from Makati City. That is close, and in a smaller city the question would not arise.
It arises here because those three kilometres are covered by road, and road journeys in Metro Manila are governed by traffic rather than distance. A short hop between the two districts is quick off-peak and slow at rush hour, which means the choice of base still shapes your days.
Transport connections
This is where Makati has the clearer advantage.
MRT-3 runs along EDSA from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay, with 13 stations across the corridor, and the transport department holds the franchise and runs the system. The EDSA busway, developed jointly by the transport department and the metropolitan development authority, includes stations at points such as Guadalupe, Buendia and Ayala.
That gives a traveller staying on the Makati side direct access to a rail corridor and a separated busway, both of which bypass general traffic. Reaching those from BGC means a road journey first.
The airport's own published bus services also list One Ayala in Makati among their destinations, which makes an inexpensive airport transfer more straightforward on that side.
Walkability and daily texture
BGC wins this comfortably.
It was planned as a district rather than accumulated over decades, with a grid layout, wide pavements and retail, restaurants and offices in the same compact area. You can spend a day there without booking transport at all, which is unusual in this metro area.
Makati's central business district is walkable within itself, with malls, offices and restaurants close together, but the surrounding roads carry heavier traffic and the district edges are less pedestrian-friendly. It is a walkable core inside a busy city rather than a walkable district.
What each is near
Makati sits closer to the EDSA corridor and to the transport spine of the metro area, which makes it a natural base for a trip that ranges widely.
BGC is more self-contained, with its own retail, dining and cultural venues within the district, and it is quieter in the evening in the parts away from the main strips.
Neither is close to the older historic districts of Manila, which are a separate journey from both.

Choosing without overthinking it
Ask yourself one question: how many days of your trip involve leaving the district you are staying in?
If the answer is most of them, choose Makati and use the rail and busway. If the answer is few, choose BGC and enjoy walking. If you are splitting the difference on a longer stay, staying in each for part of the trip is a legitimate option, since moving between them is short.
And whichever you pick, book with the address in hand rather than the district name. Drivers arriving from the airport need a building and a street, not a district, and that is true on both sides of those three kilometres.
