Barcelona El Prat to the centre: metro, train, Aerobús, taxi

Which terminal you land in decides the shortlist

El Prat has two terminals, T1 and T2, and they do not share every option. Metro L9 Sud has a station at each, which Aena places on floor 0 of T1 and of T2. The Rodalies train does not: Aena lists the train stop only at Terminal T2, floor 0 (checked 12 October 2026). The Aerobús splits by terminal, A1 serving T1 and A2 serving T2.

If you land at T1 and want the train, you first ride the free inter-terminal shuttle. Aena says it runs 24 hours every day, every 5 minutes from 08:00 to 20:00, every 7 minutes from 05:00 to 08:00 and 20:00 to 00:00, and every 10 minutes overnight. Aena gives about 10 minutes from T1 to T2 B and C, boarding at T1 level 0 (arrivals).

That shuttle plus a train that runs about every 30 minutes can add up to most of an hour before you leave the airport. From T1, the realistic choice is usually metro, Aerobús or taxi.

Metro L9 Sud and the EUR 5.90 Airport ticket

L9 Sud is not a line into the old city. TMB lists its stations from Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2 through El Prat and Fira to Zona Universitària, with changes at Torrassa for L1, Collblanc for L5 and Zona Universitària for L3 (plus L10 Sud at Can Tries-Gornal, Torrassa and Collblanc). TMB gives a train every 7 minutes and 32 minutes to the city centre (checked 12 October 2026), although the same page also says "only 30 minutes"; count your change of line on top.

The fare is where most arrivals get caught. TMB lists the Airport ticket at EUR 5.90 for one metro journey including the Aeroport T1 and T2 stations. It is non-integrated: once validated it is valid only until you leave the metro (and the Montjuïc funicular), so a connecting bus is a second fare. The transfer to L1, L3 or L5 is inside the metro and is covered.

Prices are TMB's fare list as read on 12 October 2026. ATM confirms on its airport page that the T-casual, T-familiar and T-grup cannot be used to enter or leave the L9 Sud stations, and its other-tickets page excludes the pollution-day T-aire as well. Metro hours set a hard limit. ATM gives L9 Sud's hours as 05:00 to 24:00 Monday to Thursday, until 02:00 on Fridays and the eves of public holidays, and all night on Saturday nights (checked 12 October 2026).

Rodalies R2 Nord from Terminal 2

The R2 Nord train is the one option that is both direct and inside the integrated fare system. ATM describes it as linking the airport with Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot-Aragó, roughly every 30 minutes from about 06:00 to midnight. Aena gives the line as Aeroport to Maçanet-Massanes.

Here the ticket rule flips. ATM states that all integrated tickets are valid to and from the airport on Rodalies, and its T-casual page says outright that you can reach the airport by Rodalies or bus with a T-casual (checked 12 October 2026). The airport exclusion is a metro rule only.

ATM's T-casual page shows two price tables that do not match (EUR 13.00 in the main listing and EUR 12.55 in a collapsed section for one zone). TMB's fare list also gives EUR 13.00, so this guide uses that figure; check the machine screen before paying.

Aerobús to Plaça Catalunya

The Aerobús is a dedicated shuttle, not part of the integrated system. The operator states it runs two lines 24 hours a day to Terminals 1 and 2, and Aena names them A1 Plaça Catalunya to T1 and A2 Plaça Catalunya to T2. At T1, Aena puts the stop and ticket sales at level 0 arrivals; at T2, the stop and sales are at T2B arrivals, with another stop at T2C (checked 12 October 2026).

ATM prices it as a specific ticket from EUR 7.45, running every 5 to 10 minutes by day and every 10 to 20 minutes at night. The operator's own fares page did not show amounts when read on 12 October 2026, so treat EUR 7.45 as the lowest fare quoted by ATM and confirm the price at the stop. ATM marks it as not integrated, so a T-casual or T-usual does not cover it, and Hola Barcelona sells an Aerobús combination as a separate product rather than including it in the plain travel card. The operator's rates page does state that children under 4 ride free.

Check the Aerobús home page for service notices before you rely on it. On 12 October 2026 it listed route and stop changes around Plaça Espanya on 8 to 10 October and a disruption notice for demonstrations on 12 October from 11:00 to 20:00.

Taxi fares and the airport minimum

Barcelona taxis from El Prat use the meter under fares set by the Institut Metropolità del Taxi. Its 2026 urban tariff table gives the following (checked 12 October 2026).

A ride from the airport therefore never costs less than EUR 21.00, and a large group needing a 5-to-8-seat vehicle pays one more EUR 4.60. On the special nights of 23 to 24 June, 24 to 25 December and 31 December to 1 January (20:00 to 08:00), T-2 adds another EUR 4.60.

Aena warns that at T1 the official taxi rank is on the ground floor and that the only official taxi in Barcelona is black and yellow. T2A, T2B and T2C each have ranks at arrivals.

Totals by party size

These totals use fares checked on 12 October 2026. The taxi row is an illustration for an assumed 15 km metered distance, not a measured route; your actual distance and traffic waiting time change it.

The taxi figures are EUR 2.80 + 15 km at EUR 1.35 or EUR 1.66 + the EUR 4.60 airport supplement. For four people, a taxi lands within a few euros of four Aerobús fares and takes you to the door. For one or two people, public transport is far cheaper. If your party already holds integrated tickets, the R2 Nord from T2 is the cheapest of all: two people sharing a T-familiar (EUR 11.50 on TMB's list, valid on Rodalies to the airport per ATM) spend two of its eight journeys.

Arriving after midnight

After the last metro and train, three options remain. The Aerobús and the taxi ranks run around the clock, with the taxi on the higher T-2 rate. ATM lists NitBus night lines N17 from T1 and N18 from T1 and T2 to Plaça Catalunya, running roughly 00:00 to 05:00 every 20 to 30 minutes. Aena places the N17 stop at T1 level 0 arrivals only and the N18 stops at T1 arrivals, T2AB, T2B and T2C.

Landing on a Friday or holiday eve, the metro still runs until 02:00, and on Saturday night it runs through.

When to switch plans

Switch from train to metro if you are at T2 and the next R2 Nord is far off while L9 Sud runs every 7 minutes. If you hold only a T-casual and land at T2, take the R2 Nord rather than paying EUR 5.90 for the metro; from T1, the Airport ticket (EUR 5.90) still undercuts the Aerobús (from EUR 7.45). Switch to a taxi when you are four or more, or when the Aerobús home page shows a disruption on your arrival day.
