Getting from El Prat into central Barcelona: metro, train, bus, taxi

Which terminal you land in

Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport has two passenger terminals, T1 and T2, and they do not offer the same choices. Metro line L9 Sud stops at both, with stations named Aeroport T1 and Aeroport T2. The Rodalies suburban train does not: Aena places the station at Terminal T2, Floor 0 (checked 15 September 2026), and Terminal 1 has no railway station of its own. The Aerobús splits into two lines, A1 from T1 and A2 from T2.

Budget that shuttle ride plus waiting time before you decide the train is quicker. From T1 the honest comparison is metro against Aerobús against taxi, with the train a reasonable fourth only if your destination sits close to Barcelona Sants or Passeig de Gràcia.

Metro L9 Sud and its own fare

Metro line L9 Sud serves both terminals every seven minutes, but it is a western orbital line rather than a run into the old city. TMB lists the stations in order as Aeroport T1, Aeroport T2, Mas Blau, Parc Nou, Cèntric, El Prat Estació, Les Moreres, Mercabarna, Parc Logístic, Fira, Europa | Fira, Can Tries | Gornal, Torrassa, Collblanc and Zona Universitària. You transfer at Can Tries | Gornal or Torrassa for L1, at Collblanc for L5, or at Zona Universitària for L3. TMB puts the airport-to-city-centre journey at 32 minutes (checked 15 September 2026).

The fare is the part that catches people out. The Airport Ticket is a non-integrated single metro journey priced at EUR 5.90, and TMB states that once validated it is valid only until you exit that mode of transport, meaning the metro and the Montjuïc funicular. It buys you no onward bus or tram leg.

Which cards work at the airport gates is a short and specific list.

The Autoritat del Transport Metropolità confirms the split on its own airport page: season passes such as T-usual, T-jove, T-dia and T-70/90 work at the L9 Sud airport stations, while T-casual, T-familiar and T-grup do not (checked 15 September 2026). Rodalies de Catalunya repeats the same exclusion in its fare tables, adding T-aire. Prices above come from ATM's current integrated fares page.

Rodalies R2 Nord from Terminal 2

The Rodalies R2 Nord line is the only option here that is both fully integrated into the regional fare system and direct to the centre. ATM describes it as connecting the airport with Barcelona Sants, Passeig de Gràcia and El Clot-Aragó, departing roughly every 30 minutes from about 06:00 to midnight. Aena's train page gives the route as Aeroport to Maçanet-Massanes.

Crucially, the ticket rules flip on the train. ATM states that all integrated tickets are valid to and from the airport on the Rodalies de Catalunya network, and the same applies on integrated buses. The airport exclusion is a metro rule, not an airport rule.

Aerobús and the integrated city buses

The Aerobús is the express shuttle to Plaça Catalunya, and the operator states it runs two lines 24 hours a day to Terminals 1 and 2 of Barcelona airport, A1 serving T1 and A2 serving T2. ATM prices it from EUR 7.45 and states plainly that it uses a specific ticket and is not integrated into the transport network, so no travel card covers it. Confirm the current fare on the operator's own fares page before you travel, as the prices there load dynamically and could not be read directly.

Aerobús tickets are valid for 90 days from purchase, and on return tickets the return leg is valid for another 90 days from the date of the outbound journey. Children under four travel free.

Two ordinary bus lines also serve both terminals and are inside the integrated fare system. Aena lists TMB line 46 running between Plaça Espanya and the airport via El Prat de Llobregat and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, and line 99 to Castelldefels. ATM gives line 46 approximate hours of 05:00 to 24:00. Line 46 is slow, but a 1-zone integrated ticket covers it.

Taxi fares and the airport supplement

Taxis at El Prat run on the meter under metropolitan tariffs, not on a flat airport fare of the kind Athens or Lisbon publish. The Institut Metropolità del Taxi sets the rates, and the 2026 table gives a flag-fall of EUR 2.80 on both main tariffs.

On top of that, a supplement of EUR 4.60 applies when the airport is the origin or destination of the trip, and there is a floor: the Institut sets a minimum charge of EUR 21.00 for any journey originating at the airport, including all supplements (checked 15 September 2026). A short hop to a hotel in El Prat therefore costs the same as a considerably longer ride.

Aena's taxi page warns that at Terminal 1 the official taxi service is on the Ground Floor and that the only official taxi in Barcelona is black and yellow. Ranks sit opposite the arrivals areas at T1 and at the arrivals areas of T2A, T2B and T2C.

Arriving after midnight

Metro L9 Sud shuts before the night is over on most days, so a late landing needs a different plan. ATM gives the metro's hours as 05:00 to 24:00 Monday to Thursday, until 02:00 on Fridays and the eves of public holidays, and continuous service through Saturday night.

For the hours in between, ATM lists NitBus line N17 from T1 and N18 from T1 and T2, both reaching Plaça Catalunya, running roughly between 00:00 and 05:00 every 20 to 30 minutes. Aena lists N17, N18 and N19 on its bus page. The Aerobús and the taxi ranks operate around the clock, with the taxi meter on the higher T-2 tariff.

Before you leave the arrivals hall

Decide your ticket before you reach the metro gates, not after. If you are heading for Plaça Catalunya or the Gothic Quarter with luggage, the Aerobús from your own terminal is the simplest single leg. If you already hold an integrated card, walk or ride the shuttle to Terminal 2 and take R2 Nord. If you want the metro, buy the EUR 5.90 Airport Ticket at the station machines rather than assuming a card you bought earlier will work.

Fares here change at least annually, and the 2026 taxi table and ATM fare list both carry effective dates.
