Guard drill times and where to stand

The hall's FAQ lists the Military Honor Guard Ceremonial Patrols and Drills daily at:

Morning Afternoon
9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 13:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00

Each drill lasts about 15 minutes and is held on Democracy Boulevard in front of the hall's stairs. The schedule has applied since 15 July 2024. Older guides that describe a changing of the guard beside the statue inside the main hall describe an arrangement the hall no longer lists.

Rain cancels the drill. If rain looks likely, aim for an earlier slot and keep a later one as a fallback rather than planning around the 17:00 drill alone.

Opening hours and closure days

Area Hours
Memorial Hall 9:00–18:00 daily
Memorial Park (grounds) 5:00–24:00 daily

The hall closes on Lunar New Year's Eve, Lunar New Year's Day, 228 Peace Memorial Day, annual maintenance days, and when Taipei City suspends work because of a natural disaster such as a typhoon. The park stays open, so on those days you can still walk the grounds, though there will be no hall visit. The hall does not say whether the drills run on closure days, so do not count on them.

For the 2027 Lunar New Year dates and what else closes, see our Taipei Lunar New Year guide.

Admission, audio guide and tours

The hall's English visit, FAQ and service pages publish no admission fee for visiting the hall. The service page says holders of a disability card enter free of charge and that special exhibition tickets are discounted for visitors with disabilities, which indicates some special exhibitions are ticketed.

The tours page offers:

  • Free audio guide in Mandarin, Taiwanese, Hakka, English, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Thai. Collect it at the Information Desk on the ground floor (Central Hallway) with a passport or other valid ID, or leave a NT$1,000 deposit.
  • Group tours on weekdays between 9:00 and 17:00, about 60 minutes, for groups of 10 or more booked at least seven days ahead.

The permanent exhibitions are Flowers of Freedom and President Chiang Kai-shek and the Republic of China.

Taipei Metro

Getting there by MRT and bus

The transport page gives these walking times:

Station Lines Exit and walk
Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Tamsui-Xinyi (Red), Songshan-Xindian (Green) Exit 3 about 8 min; Exit 5 about 9 min; Exit 6 about 13 min
Dongmen Zhonghe-Xinzhuang/Luzhou (Orange) Exit 3 about 8 min

Exit 3 of Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall Station is the shortest walk listed. Dongmen is the better stop if you are travelling on the Orange Line, as it saves a change.

Many city buses stop around the grounds, including stops named after the MRT station on Aiguo East Road, Roosevelt Road and Zhongshan South Road. The Taipei Sightseeing Bus Red Route stops at the Xinyi Road and Linsen Road intersection.

A sensible order for the visit

  1. Arrive 10–15 minutes before the drill you are aiming for and find a spot on Democracy Boulevard.
  2. Watch the 15-minute drill, then go up into the hall, collecting the audio guide on the ground floor.
  3. Leave time for the exhibitions before the 18:00 closing, or walk the park, which stays open until midnight.
