The 2027 holiday days, one by one

The Executive Yuan approved Taiwan's 2027 government office calendar on 21 May 2026, according to a Taipei Department of Education notice. Public schools have republished the calendar, including this Changhua school post and this New Taipei school post. Both give the break as 4–10 February.

The length comes from the law. Under the Ministry of Labor's holiday list, the Lunar New Year holiday runs from the day before New Year's Eve to the third day of the first lunar month. In 2027 the first and second days fall on a weekend, so Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 February are substitute days off.

Date (2027) Day What it is
4 February Thursday Holiday begins
5 February Friday Lunar New Year's Eve
6 February Saturday Lunar New Year's Day
7 February Sunday Second day
8 February Monday Third day
9–10 February Tuesday–Wednesday Substitute days off
11 February Thursday Offices reopen

Plan around the Eve: it is the day the venues below most often close. The zoo and gondola pages name only the Eve, while the memorial hall also lists New Year's Day as a possible closure day.

What closes on Lunar New Year's Eve

These rules were on each venue's own page on 23 October 2026. None had published 2027-specific holiday hours yet.

  • Taipei Zoo: the zoo's hours page lists a closure on Lunar New Year's Eve, which was 16 February in 2026. No 2027 date is listed yet. Normal hours are 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:00.
  • Maokong Gondola: the gondola's hours page says it closes on Lunar New Year's Eve. Holiday hours are 9:00–22:00. The usual Monday maintenance closure does not apply on national holidays, which should cover Monday 8 February.
  • Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall: the hall's hours page says closure days are announced separately. It names Lunar New Year's Eve and New Year's Day as examples. The memorial park stays open 5:00–24:00 daily, so you can walk the grounds even if the hall is shut.
  • Taipei 101 Observatory: the observatory page lists 10:00–21:00 every day, national holidays included. It says nothing about the Eve itself, so check for a notice that week.

We could not check the National Palace Museum's holiday hours on its own website. Confirm them there before planning a museum day.

Before the holiday: the Dihua Street New Year market

Taipei holds a Lunar New Year market (年貨大街) on Dihua Street every year. According to the city's 2026 announcement, it was under way by 3 February 2026 and ran until 15 February, the day before Lunar New Year's Eve. The main street was smoke-free, and free shuttles ran on three routes. The 2027 dates had not been announced on 23 October 2026. If the market again ends before the Eve, which is 5 February in 2027, it will run mostly in late January, so watch for the city's announcement.

Getting around Taipei over the holiday

Metro. For Lunar New Year 2026, Taipei Metro ran a holiday timetable all nine days. Main lines ran about every 2.5 to 9.5 minutes and roughly every 12 minutes late at night, with frequency adjusted for crowds at stations such as Taipei Zoo, Longshan Temple and Tamsui. The lost-and-found centre's last day before the break was 14 February, and it reopened on 20 February. The 2026 plan was published on 30 January, about two weeks ahead, so the 2027 plan is not out yet.

Taxis. During the Lunar New Year window, Taipei taxis add NT$30 per trip. Under the city's fare rules, the surcharge runs from three days before the holiday until its last day. In 2026 that meant 11 to 22 February, counted from the time you get in. By the same rule, the 2027 window would start on 1 February, but the city had not announced it yet.

Leaving Taipei: train booking dates

High Speed Rail. THSR's holiday table sets the 2027 Lunar New Year travel period as 2–11 February. Reservations for those dates open on 5 January 2027. Early-bird discounts are not offered on some super-peak trains and may be smaller at peak times. The THSR Pass lists no blackout dates but does not guarantee seats on holidays. Fares, booking channels and the non-reserved option are in our High Speed Rail tickets guide.

Conventional trains (TR). Taiwan Railway had not published its 2027 holiday booking table on 23 October 2026. For Lunar New Year 2026, its booking schedule opened sales on two days. East-coast trains, including the Yilan and Hualien lines, went on sale at midnight on 13 January, and west-coast trains on 14 January. Both openings came about four weeks before travel. If TR follows the same pattern, 2027 sales would open in early January; check its announcement for the exact times.
