Who qualifies

Turkish Airlines' Touristanbul page and FAQ set these conditions:

  • You are flying from one international destination to another and connecting at Istanbul Airport (IST). No tours run from Sabiha Gökçen Airport.
  • Your layover is 6–24 hours, and your flight times fit a tour's times.
  • Your ticket is a Turkish Airlines ticket with a number starting 235, and the arriving and departing flights are under the same reservation code (PNR). Codeshare flights count only when Turkish Airlines issued the ticket.
  • Free tickets in N and R class are accepted, except those issued to Turkish Airlines or other airline staff.

You can take one tour per layover, and you may join a tour on both the outbound and return legs of a round trip. You cannot use Touristanbul and the airline's hotel accommodation in the same layover, and Turkish Airlines' Stopover page says the same of its Stopover hotel nights. The US-site FAQ adds that passengers who do not meet the conditions cannot join even if they offer to pay.

Tour times and what you see

The FAQ lists the daily times. The tour-programmes page describes four programmes; we matched them to the times by name.

Tour Time What the programme page describes
Sightseeing Tour 08:00–11:30 Panoramic tour: Dolmabahçe Palace, Balat's streets, Galata Bridge for Bosphorus views
Half Day Tour 08:30–15:00 Sultanahmet: Sultanahmet Mosque, the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia
Evening Tour 16:00–21:30 Grand Bazaar, Sultanahmet Mosque, Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, ending with a meal
Bosphorus Tour 18:30–23:00, 1 April–31 October only Dinner in the Dolmabahçe Palace courtyard, then a Bosphorus cruise

The main page notes that some tours are panoramic and run without getting off the vehicle, so expect to see some sights only through the window. It also says the daily tours were updated from 1 May 2026, that Yıldız Palace was removed from the programme for the winter because of expected traffic, and it lists tours by day of the week; its evening-tour listing notes that the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays. Check which tours are offered on your date when you book.

Transport, an English-speaking guide, meals and museum entrance fees are included, with vegetarian and vegan meals available. The tours include shopping breaks but are not shopping tours.

Will your layover fit? Work backwards from the tour

Two numbers from the FAQ decide this. It usually takes about 45 minutes from the arrival gate to the registration desk, including passport control, and you must check in at the desk at least 30 minutes before the tour starts, even if you booked online. After the tour, you need at least 1 hour 25 minutes before your scheduled departure.

Adding those to the published times gives these limits, which are our own arithmetic:

Tour Be at your arrival gate by about Earliest onward departure
Sightseeing Tour 06:45 12:55
Half Day Tour 07:15 16:25
Evening Tour 14:45 22:55
Bosphorus Tour (April–October) 17:15 00:25 the next day

Use the time your plane reaches the gate, not the scheduled landing time. A flight that lands at 06:30 and leaves again at 17:00 fits the Half Day Tour; one that leaves at 15:30 fits only the Sightseeing Tour.

If the tour vehicle is delayed and you miss your flight, the FAQ says Turkish Airlines rebooks you on the next available flight at no charge. If you leave the tour early, getting back to the airport is up to you.

Visa and passport control

Every tour starts landside, so you pass Turkish passport control. Turkish Airlines says visa procedures are the passenger's responsibility. Check your passport on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa table: US, UK and many EU passport holders can enter visa-free, while some nationalities need an e-Visa that depends on holding another valid visa or residence permit. Our Turkey e-Visa and entry rules guide explains who needs what and how long your passport must be valid.

The Information Desk in the transfer area, opposite passport control, can confirm your eligibility but does not take bookings.

Bags, mobility and children

You may leave carry-on bags in the tour vehicle, except electronics and valuables, at your own risk; Turkish Airlines is not liable for loss, theft or damage. There is a paid left-luggage office next to the registration desk.

Passengers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There is no capacity limit, and Turkish Airlines may change or cancel the programme.

When a hotel is the better choice

A free tour suits a daytime layover. For an overnight connection, a hotel bed usually matters more, and the two cannot be combined in one layover. Our guide to Turkish Airlines' free transit hotel and Stopover nights explains the thresholds. If your layover is long enough to explore on your own, the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque visiting rules cover the stops the Half Day Tour visits.
