Malta Airport to Valletta and Sliema: Bus, Card, or Taxi

Malta Public Transport runs a set of express routes specifically from the airport, branded Airport Direct. According to Malta Public Transport's own page, route TD4 goes to Valletta with a stop also serving the Gozo Fast Ferry, and route TD3 goes to St Julian's, Sliema, Gżira and Msida — both running every 30 minutes. Two further routes, TD1 and TD5, head toward Rabat, Buġibba, Mellieħa and Ċirkewwa, useful if you're staying in the north of the island rather than Valletta or Sliema.

Fares are straightforward: Malta Public Transport lists €3 per passenger for most Airport Direct routes (TD1 is listed slightly higher at €3.50), payable by cash or contactless card onboard, or included at no extra cost if you already hold an Unlimited Travel Card. The buses are built with airport transfers in mind, with dedicated luggage space, USB charging and free WiFi listed among their features.

Ordinary bus fares, if you're not using Airport Direct

If your plans involve Malta's regular bus network beyond the airport transfer itself, Malta Public Transport's fares page lists single onboard tickets at €2.00 for Day Routes in winter and €2.50 in summer, €3.00 for Night Routes and Special Services, with each ticket valid for two hours including free transfers within that window. Payment onboard accepts cash, contactless bank cards or a smartphone.

For a visit longer than a couple of days, the Explore Flex card is worth considering: Malta Public Transport lists a 4-day bus pass at €21 and a 7-day pass at €27, with optional add-ons combining ferry or harbor cruise access at a higher price. A separate "12 Single Day Journeys" card at €19, valid for six months and shareable among travellers, suits an irregular, spread-out visit better than a fixed multi-day pass.

The Tallinja card is mostly for residents

Malta's personalised Tallinja card is the underlying payment system for the network, but it's built around registration rather than casual tourist use: Malta Public Transport's own page describes a €25 registration fee for adult cards, delivery within about two weeks, and a requirement to submit ID documents and a photo. It also carries free travel benefits on day and night routes and a complimentary Sliema-Valletta-Three Cities ferry and the Barrakka Lift for cardholders — but the registration process makes it impractical for a short visit. For most travellers, single onboard tickets or an Explore card cover the same routes without the paperwork.

It's also worth checking whether your accommodation is genuinely inside Valletta itself or in one of the towns just across the harbor, since "Valletta" is sometimes used loosely to describe the wider harbor area in casual conversation even though the historic peninsula is a small, specific place. If your address is actually in Floriana, the Three Cities across the water from Grand Harbour's working shipping traffic, or elsewhere near the harbor rather than inside Valletta's own walls, double-check which Airport Direct stop or bus route actually serves it, since the TD4 route is built around the old city itself rather than every nearby harbor town.

Taxis and ride options

A taxi or private transfer from the airport skips the bus transfer entirely and goes directly to your accommodation. This guide could not confirm a current fixed or typical taxi fare from an official source, so confirm the price with the driver, dispatcher or app before departure rather than assuming a specific figure.

Malta's airport sits close enough to the main urban area that the ride into Valletta or Sliema is short regardless of which option you choose, which changes the calculation compared with a country where the airport transfer itself eats up a large part of the day. A traveller arriving with only carry-on luggage may find the ordinary Airport Direct fare more than reasonable set against a taxi, while a family with several bags and a tight connection to make elsewhere might reasonably decide the extra cost of a taxi buys enough certainty and door-to-door convenience to be worth it regardless of the modest distance involved.
