How much is São Jorge Castle?
The castle is run by EGEAC. Its ticket page lists these individual prices (checked 19 October 2026):
| Visitor | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult | €17 |
| Young person, 13–25 | €8.50 |
| Over 65 | €14 |
| Person with specific needs | €12 (companion free) |
| Child under 12 | Free |
| Adult Lisboa Card holder | Free |
Discounts need proof, and a discounted ticket bought online is checked at the entrance against that proof. The castle's list makes children "under 12" free and starts the youth price at 13, so ask at the ticket office which price applies to a 12-year-old.
Two adults with a 16-year-old and a 9-year-old pay €42.50. A couple pays €34; two over-65s €28.
There is no family ticket on the official price list.
Buy direct, not from a reseller
Tickets are sold online and at the castle's ticket office. The castle names BOL (CasteloSaoJorge.bol.pt) as its only authorised online seller and says it takes no responsibility for tickets bought on other platforms. If a third-party site charges more than €17 for a plain adult entry, you are paying for the reseller, not for any extra access.
Is the Lisboa Card worth it for the castle?
Adult Lisboa Card holders enter free; the castle is one of the ten "top attractions" on Turismo de Lisboa's Lisboa Card page, alongside Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower. At face value those three alone are €50 for one adult (€17 + €18 + €15). Compare that, plus the transport you would otherwise pay for, with the card price for your chosen duration on the official shop before you buy. The shop page notes that children aged 13–15 with a child Lisboa Card still need a castle ticket.
Opening hours and what is included
From the castle's hours page (checked 19 October 2026):
| Season | Open | Last entry | Walkways and towers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 March–31 October | Daily 9:00–21:00 | 20:30 | Close between 18:00 and 21:00, depending on daylight |
| November–February | Daily 9:00–18:00 | 17:30 | Close at 17:30 |
Closed on 1 January, 1 May and 24, 25 and 31 December.
The season change on 1 November matters if you planned a sunset visit late in the month: from November the whole castle shuts at 18:00, and in summer the walls and towers can close before the grounds do.
What the ticket gives you, according to the castle:
- The whole monument area and gardens, with no time limit within opening hours.
- "À Descoberta do Castelo", a general guided visit of about an hour. The archaeological site is only open to people on this tour.
- The Camera Obscura (the castle also calls it the periscope), on a guided session of about 20 minutes. Sessions run 11:00–13:00 from October to February, 11:00–14:00 in March, 11:00–15:00 in April and September and 11:00–16:00 from May to August, weather permitting. Confirm at the ticket office on the day.
Getting up to the castle
The entrance is on Rua de Santa Cruz do Castelo, high above the Baixa. The castle's how to get there page lists:
- Bus 737 from Praça da Figueira, signed "Praça da Figueira – Castelo de S. Jorge". Get off at Castelo (Chão da Feira), about 2 minutes from the gate. This is the most direct ride.
- Tram 28E from Martim Moniz towards Prazeres. Get off at Miradouro de Santa Luzia or Largo Portas do Sol, each about 5 minutes' walk.
- Public lifts from the Baixa. The Elevador do Castelo goes from Rua dos Fanqueiros 176 up to Rua da Madalena; the Elevador do Parque do Chão do Loureiro goes from Largo do Caldas up to Costa do Castelo. The castle calls Rua da Madalena, the Chão do Loureiro lift and Costa do Castelo the fastest walking route from the Baixa.
- On foot from the metro. About 11 minutes from Rossio metro, 12 from Martim Moniz, 15 from Baixa-Chiado.
The castle page does not say whether the two lifts charge a fare; check the sign at the bottom. A Carris/Metro single on a Navegante Ocasional card is €1.90 (Metro de Lisboa 2026 fares), so four people riding bus 737 up and back down spend €15.20 if everyone pays a full single. Our tram 28 guide covers the queue at Martim Moniz, and Lisbon's trams and elevadores explains the other lifts.
Drivers: the nearest car parks are Portas do Sol and Chão do Loureiro, about 5 minutes' walk away. Visitors with special needs who want to drive to the castle door need an access code from EMEL a day ahead and should phone the ticket office on +351 218 800 620.
If you are pairing the castle with Belém on another day, see Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower tickets, and remember that those two close on Mondays while the castle does not.
