How the trip works
Montserrat sits about an hour north-west of Barcelona on the FGC Llobregat–Anoia line, which the R5 (Barcelona–Manresa) runs along. Montserrat Visita's rack railway and train page says trains to Montserrat leave Barcelona-Plaça Espanya every hour from 08:26, and the Aeri's access page puts the train ride at about 1 hour (both checked 12 October 2026).
The R5 serves both ways up:
- Rack railway (Cremallera): stay on the train to Monistrol de Montserrat, the FGC station where the rack railway starts. It calls at Monistrol Vila (the car-park station) and climbs more than 600 metres over 5 km to the monastery.
- Cable car (Aeri de Montserrat): get off at the R5 stop that serves the cable car. The operator gives the base station's address as Ctra. C-55 km 11.5, Monistrol de Montserrat, and Montserrat Visita confirms the R5 links with both the cable car and the rack railway.
Turistren, the FGC tourism brand, puts the whole journey by public transport at about 1.5 hours.

The Aeri's 2026 discounts, including the over-65 rate, are not cumulative.
The rack railway runs all year. Turistren's timetable has three seasons: high season (its list includes weekends in April, May, June and October, all of August and 6–31 July) with three trains an hour and a last train down from the monastery at 20:15; mid season with three an hour until 15:00, then two an hour, last down 19:15; and low season with two an hour, last down 18:15, extended to 19:15 on working days in April, May and October. For October that means a last train down at 19:15 on weekdays and 20:15 at weekends. Some timetable headings on the page still say 2024, so confirm your date on the Turistren timetable page before you plan the return.
Montserrat Visita gives the climb as 15 minutes; Turistren's timetable shows about 13 minutes from Monistrol Vila and about 20 minutes from Monistrol de Montserrat, where R5 passengers change.
On the way down, Montserrat Visita's FAQ page says rack trains leave Montserrat at a quarter past every hour to connect with the R5 back to Barcelona.
Which tickets to buy
There are three ways to pay, and the price differences come mostly from what is bundled.
- Separate tickets. Buy the rack railway or cable car on its own (prices above) plus an FGC train ticket. Turistren says the T-Mobilitat card is not valid on these Montserrat lines because they sit outside the ATM integrated network, so buy a specific ticket at the rack railway or funicular station, or online. Our guide to T-casual and Barcelona's fare zones explains the zone system the train fare follows.
- FGC train + rack railway pack. Turistren sells a combined train and rack railway ticket priced by fare zone. For an adult it runs from €11.90 one way / €20.80 return (1 zone) to €17.80 one way / €32.60 return (5 zones); a child return is €13.30–€25.10 and a senior return €19.30–€31.10 (fares valid until 31 December 2026). The page does not say which zone column applies from Plaça Espanya; FGC's ticket finder shows it when you enter your stations.
- Tot Montserrat. Turistren lists metro ticket, return FGC train to Monistrol de Montserrat, return rack railway, the Sant Joan funicular (and Santa Cova when running), the Audiovisual Space, the Montserrat Museum, a buffet lunch and direct access to the Throne of the Virgin without prior booking. The Aeri's home page prices an "All Montserrat" package at €71.50, and its fares page says the Trans Montserrat and Tot Montserrat packages, which let you choose between Aeri and rack railway, are sold at the FGC offices in Plaça Espanya.
The Aeri page also names Trans Montserrat as a package sold at the same FGC desk, but none of the pages we could read publishes its contents or current price, so check it at Plaça Espanya.
The Sanctuary tourist ticket
Entry to the Atrium, Basilica and the Cambril (the chapel behind the Throne) needs a tourist ticket, according to Montserrat Visita's tourist ticket page. It does not apply to residents of Catalonia, the rest of Spain or other EU countries (except groups), to guests staying overnight at Montserrat, or to people attending religious services. Non-residents buy it on the Montserrat Visita ticket shop, which also sells combinations; the price is shown only in the shop. Montserrat Visita's FAQ says these packages carry a fixed Throne time and can be booked one month in advance.
A couple's day: example timing and cost
Two adults on a weekday, going up by rack railway and riding the Sant Joan funicular:
- 08:26 train from Plaça Espanya, arriving at Monistrol de Montserrat about an hour later
- Rack railway up from Monistrol de Montserrat, about 20 minutes, reaching the monastery at around 10:00
- Throne of the Virgin before its 10:30 morning break
- Sant Joan funicular (first ascent around 10:00) and a walk at the top
- 13:00 Escolania in the Basilica, if booked
- Rack train down at a quarter past the hour, connecting with the R5
| Option for two adults | Total | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Train + rack pack, return | €41.60–€65.20 | Train and rack railway, depending on zones |
| Plus Sant Joan funicular, return | +€35.00 | €17.50 each |
| Pack plus Sant Joan, total | €76.60–€100.20 | Plus the tourist ticket if you are not an EU resident |
| Tot Montserrat (€71.50 each) | €143.00 | Adds metro, museum, lunch, Throne access without booking |
The arithmetic uses the Turistren and Aeri fares checked 12 October 2026. If you would pay for lunch and the museum anyway, Tot Montserrat narrows the gap; if you only want the monastery and a walk, the train and rack pack costs less. Going up by cable car instead does not change the ascent price for adults (€15 return either way), but you then pay the FGC train fare separately.
Basilica, Black Madonna and Escolania times
Montserrat Visita's opening hours page gives these times (checked 12 October 2026):
- Basilica: 7:00–20:00
- Throne of the Virgin (the Black Madonna, La Moreneta): 8:00–10:30, then from midday to 18:25. The page prints the afternoon start as "12 am"; we read it as midday because of the morning closure at 10:30.
- Museum of Montserrat: Monday–Friday 10:00–17:45; weekends and public holidays 10:00–18:45
The Escolania's singing schedule for October 2026 shows the Salve and Virolai at 13:00–13:15 Monday to Friday, and after Vespers at 19:15–19:30 Monday to Thursday. On Sundays the boys sing at the 11:00 Conventual Mass on some dates (not on 4 October) and at Vespers at 18:45. The Escolania does not sing on October Saturdays; on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October the Schola Cantorum sings the Salve, Vespers and Mass in its place. Booking is required for the weekday 13:00 Salve and the Sunday 11:00 Mass.
The funiculars
Two funiculars leave from the monastery area, both run by FGC with the rack railway.
- Sant Joan climbs above the monastery in about 6 minutes. It runs every 12 minutes in high and mid season and every 15 minutes in low season, with the first ascent at 10:00 and the last departures down between about 17:00 and 18:30 depending on the date. Adult fares are €11.40 one way and €17.50 return.
- Santa Cova runs down towards the Holy Cave. Turistren lists it as out of service for maintenance until further notice. When running, adult fares are €4.55 one way and €7.00 return.
A combined Sant Joan and Santa Cova ticket costs €20.65 for an adult; while Santa Cova is closed, the single Sant Joan return is the cheaper choice. Holders of the Catalan Disability Card get 50% off the rack railway and both funiculars (all fares valid until 31 December 2026, checked 12 October 2026).
